Chapter 146: Game Tournament

After that, I joined in on the conversations with both Lua-san’s group and Rozzo-san’s group and had some truly meaningful discussions.

These two groups were having rather constructive talks, and especially Donny-san’s lecture on dungeons was filled with information that was useful even to me.

Before joining the Royal Knights, it seems he worked as an A-rank adventurer conquering dungeons. More recently, he’s even been mentoring Ren-san and the others. Plus, thanks to contact lenses improving his vision, he’s apparently even stronger than he was at his peak… So it’s no wonder Donny-san’s lecture was incredibly valuable.

While I was gathering helpful information from everyone, it seems that Yato-san and Ashros arrived.

As I went out to greet them, Yato-san suddenly jumped at me.

“Sato! I’ve missed you so much! I couldn’t stop craving your otherworldly cooking!”

“Thank you for coming, Yato-san. So it’s not me you missed, but the food?”

“Of course I came to see you too! But I’ve only been able to eat cup noodles these past few months. They were good, sure, but I was longing for those jewel-like otherworldly dishes of yours!”

Yato-san passionately expressed, with her whole body, just how much she had been looking forward to it.

It was a little sad that the food was her main reason, but after such an impassioned plea, I had no choice but to cook my heart out together with Norman-san.

“Leave it to me. I’ll make lots of food today. I’m sure you’ll be pleased, Yato-san.”

“Yay! Can I eat now?”

“Not yet. We were waiting for you and Ashros-san to arrive. We’re going to have a game tournament first.”

“A game tournament? Oh, you mean video games!”

“Exactly. Since both of you play, I hope you’ll join us.”

“Of course I will!”

“Please count me in as well. I’m quite confident when it comes to video games.”

Yato-san’s eyes sparkled at the mention of food, while Ashros-san’s eyes sparkled at the mention of games.

Normally expressionless, Ashros-san only ever shows emotion when it comes to video games. She seemed confident this time too, already flexing her fingers in anticipation.

“I’m glad you’re both excited. Let’s meet up with everyone and head to the recreation room.”

So we gathered with everyone chatting in the living room, and only those participating in the game tournament moved to the rec room.

The participants were: Sheila-san, Helena, Joel-kun, Yato-san, Ashros-san, Ren-san, Mika-san, and Shoji-san — 8 in total.

The rules of the tournament were simple: a Smash Bros. tournament with three stock matches. Wins in board games played while waiting would also count toward the total score, which would determine the overall winner.

Even if you placed last in Smash, winning every board game round could still put you in contention, making for a very well-balanced system.

This time, items were allowed in Smash matches, so even Yato-san — probably the weakest among us — had a real shot at victory.

If I had to name a favourite, just like in the mock battles, it would be Sheila-san.

She plays Smash with Helena almost every night and is extremely strong in board games too.

Her main rival is Helena, who recently claimed to have about a 20% win rate against her, so she stands a solid chance in the real match.

As for Ren-san and his group — their skill level is still a mystery.

Games were probably a more familiar part of their childhood than mine, so there’s a real possibility they could be better than me.

That makes the tournament’s outcome truly unpredictable — and, in my opinion, all the more exciting.

“Nobody said there was a Switch! This whole room is basically Japan! Sato’s skill is just crazy!”

“Yeah, it’s just way too bizarre. Our skills are supposedly top-tier too, but Sato’s is completely in a league of its own.”

“I think so too. But it’s convenient, and I’ve never had a reason to complain. I mean, who knows what kind of god is behind it — I’d hate to get nerfed if they took offense.”

“Totally fair! We should just be grateful that we can play video games even in another world!”

They were absolutely right. No need to overthink it — we’re simply thankful for our situation.

After all, we’re paying the proper price for it.

“So… have any of you used a Switch before?”

“Me and Shoji used to play games a lot. Not Smash, though — we played Street Fighter.”

“Street Fighter, huh! That brings back memories.”

Street Fighter II was a staple of my youth.

I’ve heard even today’s kids still play it, which makes me strangely happy.

“I’ve only played a little. I’m better at Mario Party, so I decided to sit out the Smash tournament.”

“I’m super good at it! I used to play with my big brother all the time on the Wii U!”

“Really? Then you’re a strong contender, Mika-san.”

“I will not lose…!”

Hearing about Mika-san’s Smash Bros. experience, Sheila-san’s competitive spirit flared up.

They had clashed in fierce battles during the mock battle tournament, so if they end up facing off again in Smash, it’ll definitely be a match to watch.
