Chapter 140: The Fiancé Appears
On the night of their return, Tauro and Aeris finally reached home exhausted.
Aeris had helped complete the Adventurers’ Guild report, while Tauro had endured the registration procedures at the Merchants’ Guild. Both intended to rest immediately.
Marches, however, was waiting in the living room.
“Marches-san, we’ve just returned from a long journey and I’m honestly exhausted. Could we continue this tomorrow?”
Tauro didn’t bother hiding how badly he wanted the evening to end.
“You said that we would speak later, so I’ve been waiting for you.”
Marches was correct, unfortunately.
“I did say that. Very well, we can discuss the general points, but not every detail. If we begin a full negotiation tonight, none of us will sleep.”
Tauro attempted to establish a limit.
Once Marches began asking about the magic lantern and the water-repellent cloth, however, Tauro kept answering. Before he realized it, midnight had arrived.
Aeris, already exhausted, had gone to bed long before the discussion ended.
The following morning, Tauro remained deeply asleep.
Aeris understood how tired he was and left him undisturbed.
Shin and Rumeya soon visited the house and learned that Tauro hadn’t awakened.
“Why do the three of us not accept an herb-gathering quest today?”
Shin suggested.
“That sounds fine. We can also check whether there are any other simple assignments nearby,”
Aeris replied.
She asked them to wait while she prepared, and the three headed to the guild without Tauro.
When they reached the building, they noticed an aristocratically dressed man standing outside with three soldiers in plate armor.
“Who are those people?”
Rumeya asked. The group looked completely out of place in rural Dansas.
“They appear to be nobles. What are they doing here?”
Shin wondered.
“That tasteless clothing reminds me of…”
Aeris stopped midway through the sentence.
Shin and Rumeya turned and saw that her face had gone pale.
“Aeris, what’s wrong? You look ill,”
Rumeya said, leaning closer.
Shin followed her gaze to the richly dressed man and immediately stepped between them, blocking the stranger’s view.
“Is he the reason?”
Shin asked while signaling Rumeya to help conceal Aeris.
“That man is Uwaakin. He was my estranged mother’s affair partner, and he was also intended to become my fiancé. He’s the second son of a fallen viscount’s family.”
“There’s far too much wrong with that explanation,”
Rumeya muttered, stunned by the complexity of Aeris’s family circumstances.
“No wonder you turned pale. I wouldn’t want to meet someone like that either,”
Shin said.
“Let us leave before he notices us.”
Rumeya turned back while he and Shin continued shielding Aeris.
“You two, stop. And whoever you’re hiding behind you, step out where I can see you,”
Uwaakin ordered.
He had noticed Aeris’s partially concealed figure.
The three pretended not to hear and continued walking away.
“How dare you ignore a future member of House Van Dyne! Soldiers, stop them!”
Uwaakin shouted.
The three soldiers ran forward. Two seized Shin and Rumeya by the shoulders and tried to force them around.
Shin and Rumeya turned with the pull and knocked the soldiers’ hands away.
“What’s this? You dare resist us?”
The soldiers lowered their spears.
“Now you’re drawing weapons?”
“What did you expect after grabbing strangers without warning?”
Rumeya and Shin kept their bodies between Uwaakin and Aeris.
The commotion brought Chloe out of the guild.
“What’s happening here?”
She raised her voice with unusual force and stepped between the groups.
Uwaakin and the soldiers turned toward her.
“Who are you, girl? Remember that I’m to become a member of House Van Dyne,”
Uwaakin said, looking Chloe over arrogantly from head to toe.
“I’m the branch manager of the Dansas Adventurers’ Guild. Noble or not, you’re bound by the pact between the kingdom and the Guild. On what authority are your soldiers interfering with our adventurers and pointing weapons at them?”
The name of House Van Dyne intimidated Chloe, but she allowed none of that fear to appear on her face. She spoke with the full authority of a guild branch manager.
From the corner of her eye, she saw Shin, Rumeya, and Aeris slip around the side of the building.
Relieved that she had successfully created an opportunity for them to escape, Chloe held her ground.
