Chapter 93: Team Name and Gifts
The four sat in the dining area of the Resting Pavilion (Ikoi-tei), wearing expressions of intense concentration.
The subject of their discussion, however, was remarkably trivial.
“Then you suggest something, Tauro. You’ve only been criticizing our ideas.”
Now the pressure was on him.
To be honest, Tauro’s naming sense was just as nonexistent as theirs. No matter how hard he tried, he doubted he could produce anything good.
“Well… Since we formed in Dansas, how about ‘The Healers of Dansas’?”
“That’s a play on gathering medicinal herbs, isn’t it? It’s no better than Rumeya’s ‘Professional Herb-Gathering Group’!”
This time, Aeris delivered the retort.
“Then do you have an idea, Aeris?”
Rarely angered, Tauro bristled at being lumped together with Rumeya.
“Let’s see… Of course! We should be ‘The Golden Wings’!”
Aeris tossed back her long golden hair as she spoke.
“That’s far too obviously about you.”
This time, Shin objected with an exasperated sigh.
“Then how about the ‘Black-Gold Wings’? Shin and Rumeya have black hair, while Aeris and I are blond, so it fits us perfectly.”
Tauro offered the name as a compromise.
“The ‘Black-Gold Wings’? Hmm… Well, Tauro managed to squeeze the name out, so I’ll accept it. And it’s certainly much better than ‘The Healers of Dansas.’”
Aeris was satisfied because the name resembled her own suggestion.
The other two agreed as well.
“Black and gold, huh? Sounds good!”
“I’m fine with it too.”
They liked having all four of their hair colors represented.
And so, despite their collective lack of naming sense, the four settled on a name that satisfied them all.
Tauro promptly embroidered a black wing edged in gold on the back of his leather armor.
When Aeris noticed it, she became jealous, so he agreed to embroider the same emblem on her priestly clothes.
Naturally, Shin and Rumeya wanted it too.
The two were planning to buy leather armor, so Tauro paid half the cost of each set as a gift celebrating their promotion and embroidered the emblem on the backs.
“Wait! It’s not fair that only Shin and Rumeya received presents!”
Now Aeris was the one complaining.
“You don’t need leather armor like they do.”
Tauro answered with perfect logic.
“I want a new staff!”
Aeris’s eyes sparkled.
Her current staff was a beginner’s model with a small magic stone at its tip that had little effect on her magic.
Staffs varied enormously in quality. The better the magic stone attached to one, the more valuable—and expensive—it became. They were specialized items that ordinary weapon shops didn’t handle; entire stores existed solely to sell staffs.
“Hmm… Then give me a few days. I’ll make one for you.”
“What? You can make staffs too, Tauro?”
Aeris was genuinely surprised.
“I understand how they work, so I think I can manage.”
With that, Tauro immediately visited the woodworking shop.
High-quality lumber was inexpensive in Dansas, and he also had an idea he wanted to test.
He selected a length of ebony and had the craftsman cut it for him.
His ideal was a staff sturdy enough to use as a club, so he made its head thicker to give it weight.
For the tip, Tauro used the magic stone from the Goblin Knight that had nearly evolved into a Goblin Rider. He had kept it instead of selling it. The stone would be mounted so Aeris could replace it if she obtained a better one in the future.
Tauro carved patterns that extended toward the socket holding the magic stone. Concealed within the decorative design was a modified version of one of his special magic circles.
Because the circle was interwoven with purely decorative carving, it should be impossible to decipher.
It was designed to draw out the magic stone’s full latent power. With the right stone, the result should be an excellent staff.
After working for an entire day, Tauro completed Aeris’s staff.
When he gave it to her the following day, she liked it even more than he had expected.
She seemed particularly taken with the carving. After studying it closely, she nodded several times.
“Thank you, Tauro. I’ll treasure it!”
She looked completely satisfied.
“I’m glad. Oh, and if you channel mana into it, the magic stone’s properties will manifest.”
At Tauro’s explanation, Aeris immediately channeled mana into the staff.
A blade-like light appeared around the magic stone at its tip.
“Perhaps because it came from a Goblin Knight, the stone produces a sharp, blade-like edge that should be useful in close combat. It also seems to enhance magical power and defensive magic.”
“I’m in the rear guard. Why would I be fighting in close combat?”
Aeris sounded exasperated, but even a rearguard combatant might be forced into close quarters. Protecting herself so that she didn’t burden her companions was part of her role.
Once again, Aeris found herself delighted with the finest gift Tauro had ever given her.
