Chapter 300: Consultation in the Carriage

Before it got crowded, we left the eastern district and returned to the inn to sleep.

The next morning, we boarded the carriage and left Rudark city behind.

During the ride, I used the time to report everything Chris-san had proposed yesterday to Sheila-san and Velvet-san.

When I asked for their opinions, Sheila-san was in favor of accepting, while Velvet-san opposed it, resulting in divided opinions.

“I strongly feel that we should accept them. Though I dislike that they were freed by force, the ones who were enslaved are not at fault.”

“I’m against it. Only those with money can purchase slaves. I’ve heard of ‘DMR’ even, and it’s often brought up as a problem. I understand wanting to accept them, but if it’s discovered and they suspect a connection to DMR… it’s far too risky.”

So Velvet-san knew about DMR.

As she said, only the wealthy can purchase slaves, and wealth comes with power.

Facing powerful people is also intimidating for me.

The number of migrants is increasing, so I cannot act rashly based solely on my own judgment.

“I understand both perspectives… what should I do?”

“Sato-san can decide. Whatever decision you make, I will follow.”

“I agree with Sheila. I’ve explained the risks, and if it’s discovered, there could be danger. Considering that, what do you want to do, Sato?”

“…I want to accept them. I don’t want to back down anymore.”

For the enslaved people in this world, this might already be an overly comfortable environment, but I have experienced breaking down both mentally and physically as an overworked corporate drone.

And it wasn’t just me; I’ve seen seniors, colleagues, and juniors collapse too, and at the time, I could offer no suggestions.

Since being transported to this world, I’ve been firmly against black labor.

Slavery is the extreme example of that. I may lack the power to start a liberation movement, but I want to at least provide a place for them to go.

“…I expected you’d say that, Sato. You seem hesitant, but you have conviction and a strong will.”
“I also expected that of Sato-san. If you’ve decided to accept them, we now need to figure out the next steps.”

“Would having them work normally pose too high a risk?”

“If they stay in the village, I think it’s fine. I’ll make preparations just in case it’s discovered.”

“I’ll think of work the former slaves can do, and I’ll strengthen myself just in case something happens.”

Sheila-san and Velvet-san’s words are so reassuring.

I truly feel blessed.

“Thank you. I can rely on you both.”

“Thinking about it, Sato’s strength is like a state-level force, right? With the hero party, me, Donnie, powerful summoned creatures, the Dragonfolk led by Yatogami, and the Elf kingdom… maybe even if it’s discovered, it won’t be a problem.”

Listing it out made me realize that we truly are a major force.

Of course, I personally have no power and have no intention of taking a fight-first stance.

“It may be okay, but I don’t want conflict, so we’ll act discreetly. Thank you, Sheila-san and Velvet-san, for consulting with me.”

“No need for thanks! I’m always being helped by Sato-san. Whatever happens, I’m on your side!”

“Same here. And helping Sato is also for my own sake. I will absolutely protect you, Sato.”

Both Sheila-san and Velvet-san declared passionately with fire in their eyes.

Feeling happy, the carriage rocked as we traveled, and before I knew it, we had arrived.

After explaining my impressions of Rudark and what happened with Chris-san, and discussing what to do next, it somehow felt faster than the journey there.

“That went by quickly, didn’t it?”

“Yeah, the conversation was lively. Oh, Helena and Lime have come out.”

Perhaps noticing our return, Helena and Lime came to greet us.

Though they had set aside the same amount of leisure time, I felt guilty for always leaving them behind.

“Master, welcome back! How was your trip?”

“Thanks to you, we could relax. Did anything happen while we were away?”

“Nothing happened. By the way… what’s on Sheila-san’s shoulder?”

Helena and Lime seemed interested in the Aura Birds, leaning in to observe.

“They’re new companions purchased during the trip. Please be gentle with them.”

“Understood. Where will they be kept?”

“Mostly in the birdcage, I think. They don’t seem like they’ll escape, so free-range on the back hill might work too, but other animals or monsters could attack them.”

“In that case, I’ll help care for them alongside Master. Please let me.”

Helena bowed to the Aura Birds, and the two chirped softly as if replying.

I need to give names to these Aura Birds as well.

I’ll decide their names by tomorrow… but for now, I want to rest and recover from the travel.
