Chapter 4: The Adventurers’ Guild
“Registration fee? How much does it cost?”
For someone without a coin to his name, the situation was all but hopeless, but he asked anyway.
The receptionist answered apologetically.
“Ten silver coins…”
I’m doomed!
Tauro wailed inwardly.
Ten silver coins were equivalent to 10,000 yen in his previous life.
If Tauro had ever possessed that much money, the adult vagrants in the back alleys would have beaten him and taken it.
He could barely find enough food to survive each day. Ten silver coins was an impossible sum.
In fact, during his two years in this town, he had never even laid eyes on anything but copper coins.
He would have borrowed the money if he could, but Tauro’s position was already precarious.
He had fled his village and had nothing that could verify his identity.
No one had any reason to trust him.

A voice suddenly came from behind Tauro. It belonged to Mauve, the veteran adventurer.
“Come on, Mauve. The moment that brat gets an adventurer’s identification tag, he’ll run off.”
The surrounding adventurers jeered.
“That’s exactly why!”
Mauve shot back.
“Huh?”
The other adventurers stared at him blankly.
“All right, let’s start a wager! The question is whether this kid will work honestly and repay the ten silver coins I’m lending him!”
“Gyahaha! So that’s your game! But that won’t be much of a wager!”
“Exactly! Who’s going to bet on the kid?”
“Besides, he looks ready to drop dead at any moment!”
The adventurers’ merciless remarks flew through the room.
“I’ll bet on the kid!”
Mauve declared with a fearless grin.
“Oh! Here’s our chance to make Mauve cough up all the money he’s been hoarding!”
“All right, I’m in! Fifteen silver coins says he runs away!”
“I’ll put twenty on him dropping dead before he pays you back!”
“Five silver coins says he skips town!”
As the adventurers piled wagers on Tauro’s failure, the receptionist leaned over and whispered to him.
“You’re lucky. Mauve was an orphan himself, and I hear he struggled before making a life for himself as an adventurer. Seeing you may have reminded him of his younger days.”
He may have a mob-character sort of name, but Mauve is an incredibly good man!
Deeply moved, Tauro wept inwardly.
“Let’s begin the registration process. My name is Nei. It’s nice to meet you. What’s your name?”
“Tauro Satou.”
Nei, the receptionist, took a magic device from the shelf behind her. It was a box with a crystal ball embedded in it.
“Please touch this.”
Tauro obediently did as instructed.
It looked similar to the device used during his baptism ceremony.
The crystal ball lit up, and a sheet of paper emerged from the bottom of the box.
“Tauro Satou, eight years old. Your skill is…”
Nei’s eyes widened.
“It’s a [Garbled Text] skill, and from what I can see, you only have one. Skills normally have names, and people use those names as clues when deciding what to practice.”
Nei continued her explanation.
“For example, someone with the skills [Spear User] and [Sewing] can improve their status by continuing to practice spear techniques and sewing. Along the way, if they fulfill certain conditions, they may also acquire new abilities. The Voice of the World will announce it when that happens.”
“The Voice of the World?”
“Yes. It’s also said to be the voice of the gods in the heavens. Everyone hears it whenever they acquire an ability.”
“I see. (Was that what I heard when I nearly died and regained the memories of my previous life?)”
“Because your skill’s name is garbled, you won’t know which field you should focus on. Still, if you keep trying different things, you’re sure to learn something eventually. Do your best!”
“I will! Thank you very much!”
“All right. Wait here for a moment.”
Nei took the sheet produced by the magic device over to another, larger magic box.
At first glance, it looked a little like a photocopier…
She placed the paper between the box and a flat panel, and the device flashed for an instant.
It really is like a photocopier…
Something emerged from the bottom.
Nei brought it over.
“This tag proves both your identity and your membership in the Adventurers’ Guild.”
She handed Tauro a small wooden plate.
“Thank you very much!”
“You’re welcome. Thread a cord through it and wear it around your neck.”
Nei replied with a smile.
“Now, let me explain the Adventurers’ Guild. The guild uses a rank system, and beginners start at G- rank.”
“G-minus?”
“Yes. The ranks go from G- to G, then G+, followed by F-, and so on.”
It sounded like a system in which earning a promotion would take quite some time.
