Chapter 1: Successful Transfer Experiment!?
My name is Taro Sato. I’m twenty-one years old and a fourth-year university student.
Ever since childhood, Taro had dreamed of otherworldly fantasy. In elementary school, he founded a black-magic club and threw himself into its research. He even caused a scandal that made the news when he sacrificed one of the school’s chickens in an experiment.
His parents were fiercely criticized by the public, and even as a child, Taro deeply regretted what he had done. Afterward, he devoted himself to both academics and sports and gained admission to a prestigious middle and high school known throughout the country.
Or so it appeared. His true objective was to join the school’s Black Magic Club.
He then entered Imperial University, regarded as one of the country’s finest universities. Naturally, his goal was to join its distinguished Black Magic Society, which boasted a century of black-magic research.
Taro had devoted his entire youth to studying black magic. Tomorrow would be the first day of the university festival, where he was scheduled to present the culmination of his work: “The Study and Practical Application of Magic Circles,” an experiment intended to transfer him to another world.
He glanced at the clock. It was already late at night.
“I can’t exactly try this for the first time in front of everyone tomorrow.”
Having finished drawing the magic circle, Taro muttered to himself in the dim clubroom.
“The history of this society spans a hundred years. I’ve studied the data left by generations of alumni, and now the results of all my research are finally…”
Taro clenched his fist.
“For now, I should test whether it works properly…”
With that, he began mumbling an incantation before the completed magic circle.
“…Nothing’s happening.”
Taro recited the incantation once more.
“…Still no reaction.”
The thought that all his hard work might go unrewarded nearly brought him to tears.
“…Maybe I need to place something in the center of the magic circle.”
He picked up a stuffed bear from the clubroom and was about to approach the circle without thinking.
“Whoa, that was close. That would’ve triggered a flag. In situations like this, carelessly stepping inside always ends with you being transported! Not this time! Hahaha!”
Taro worked himself into a frenzy all by himself. Late-night excitement could be frightening.
He hoisted an especially large backpack that had been sitting beside the clubroom wall.
“Now, even if I’m suddenly transported, I can conquer another world with modern high-tech gadgets!”
Staggering beneath the backpack’s weight, Taro carried the stuffed bear into the center of the magic circle.
Then… the magic circle began to glow!
“I did it! It worked! At last, I’m being transported to another world!”
Taro rejoiced.
At the same moment, however, his consciousness began to fade.
“Ah, this is the classic ‘wake up in another world’ scenario…”
Smiling, Taro lost consciousness.
“Hello! Please wake up.”
Someone was shaking him.
“Mmm…”
As he regained consciousness, Taro immediately became convinced that the experiment had succeeded.
(The person waking me has a woman’s voice. So my first contact is with the heroine!)
His blurry, white vision gradually cleared, though everything around him remained white.
“God, it seems he’s awake.”
The woman who had shaken Taro awake reported to someone a short distance away. God?
“…God?”
It was a word no otherworld story could do without.
Taro reacted at once.
“Ah! Is this where I receive an overpowered skill?”
As Taro imagined this thrilling development, the white-haired, elderly-looking god gave him an exasperated look.
“You’ve done something foolish.”
“Huh?”
Taro stared blankly. He had expected the god to say something more fitting for the occasion, such as, “You’ve done well to come this far.”
“You’re from Earth, are you not? The god responsible for that world wasn’t supposed to have taught humanity anything about magic. I never expected someone to discover it on their own.”
“I see… So does that mean I’ve been transported here?”
Taro looked around. He was in a space with almost entirely white walls and a white floor.
Apart from a woman in white, apparently the god’s assistant, standing beside him, there was nothing else.
“Transported? Ah, discovering magic on your own was impressive, but…”
The god moved a finger as though examining something in front of him.
“The magic circle you drew wasn’t a transfer circle but a reincarnation circle. An incomplete one at that, since you failed to specify a destination. You were lucky to arrive here at all. The Divine Council’s Soul Recycling Act had only just gone into effect.”
“A reincarnation circle? What? What?!”
Transfer meant moving to another world in one’s existing body, while reincarnation meant dying first and being born again.
In other words…
“You died in your former world. They’re in an uproar over there. It’ll be recorded as a death under mysterious circumstances.”
Gaaah!
Taro Sato died under mysterious circumstances while trying to transfer to another world!
