Chapter 19: More Money Required!

“It’s just a chicken, yet look at you crying as if your soul has left your body. Someone who didn’t know better might think someone died at your home. How much can a chicken be worth? Here’s the payment for your chicken—I hope these coins are enough.”

A noble student casually dug a few gold coins from his pocket and tossed them to a classmate from the Beastmaster Academy, who was crying and clinging to the chicken he had raised.

The Beastmaster Academy student looked at the coins on the ground, eyes brightening slightly. In his household, his parents worked tirelessly for a whole month, and even the lord of a manor might give only a few coins. The value of a chicken was perhaps a few silver pieces—certainly not as much as these coins before him.

The other noble students also began pulling out gold coins from their pockets and tossing them to the Beastmaster Academy students. The students froze for a moment, stunned by the sheer amount of coins. With this money, they could cover a month—or even two months—of meals.

After staring at the scattered coins for a moment, one of the Beastmaster Academy students spoke, “You’re being utterly unreasonable! The chicken I’m holding was raised with care all semester. I gave it water every day, dug up worms for it, even mixed in some magic worms. We’ve formed a bond with it. How can we sell our child for a few coins?”

“He actually calls the chicken his child!” a noble student laughed out loud, and the others soon joined in.

“It’s useless to argue. Today, this chicken is coming with us, whether you like it or not!”

After laughing, the noble boy glared fiercely at the commoner students from the Beastmaster Academy.

“You! This is no longer just a chicken—it’s our family, our dearest friend, our beloved sibling!” the Beastmaster Academy student shouted in grief and anger.

“Oh? Then tell us, how can we have this chicken?”

The noble students, seeing their reaction, dared not push too hard; they didn’t want to attract the teachers’ attention.

The leader of the Beastmaster Academy students rolled his eyes and arched his brow, shouting at the nobles, “We want more money!”

Instantly, Merlin’s classmates froze, then one by one rolled their eyes and dug deeper into their pockets, tossing out more gold coins.

“Hey!” The Beastmaster Academy students quickly handed over the chickens and grabbed the coins from the ground, running off.

“Deal! These chickens are all yours!”

After leaving a few chickens behind, the students ran out of the high-class dorm area to the open field. Turning to see no one was chasing them, they huddled together, giggling foolishly at the coins in their hands.

The student who had shouted the loudest glanced back at the high-class dorms, gripped his coins tightly, and with a sly, mocking grin said, “A bunch of silly young masters! A few chickens for dozens of coins? We’re living like kings! Anyone at the Beastmaster Academy can raise a cage of these chickens—money’s just burning a hole in their pockets, fools!”

Having made a huge profit, the students quickly left the high-class dorm area.

Merlin rolled his eyes at his classmates carrying chickens—these guys really went to great lengths just to eat Beggar’s Chicken.

Well, it wasn’t surprising. Ever since Merlin had made Lotus Leaf Beggar’s Chicken in class, the students had been unable to resist. They’d never smelled anything so delicious in their lives, especially after hearing that their teacher, Harrington, had flaunted an entire Beggar’s Chicken before reaching his office, leaving them slightly envious.

Why eat it all before reaching the office? So no other teacher could snatch it away!

They simply couldn’t imagine how delicious this so-called Lotus Leaf Beggar’s Chicken must be.

“Merlin, now that we have the chicken, we can start cooking, right?” Kris’s mouth was watering.

Merlin spread his hands. “Still no luck—we’re out of spices.”

Fitt immediately jumped in. “Impossible! Didn’t you just receive a huge bag of spices today?”

“I went to see my parents and left all those spices with them. You all know my family’s in trouble, and we need to convert them into money,” Merlin said helplessly.

At this, the Alchemy Academy students all raised their hands. “I still have a lot of leftover spices from yesterday’s class—I’ll give them to you!”

“Yes, we all do—everything extra goes to you!”

“My family sent me plenty of spices to practice Incense mixing—I’ll give you those too!”

“Still might not be enough. Lotus Leaf Beggar’s Chicken requires a ton of spices. That’s why it tastes so good,” Merlin said, raising an eyebrow and sighing at their generosity.

“If it’s not enough, borrow some—ask the seniors!”

“My relatives study at the Arcane Academy. I can borrow some from them!”

“I’ll check if the Alchemy Academy’s material shop is open later—I can buy some. It’s just spices!”

“Exactly, just spices—we’ve got plenty!”

Soon, Merlin’s classmates rushed to their dorms, bringing out all the leftover alchemy spices from yesterday, along with large and small packages of spices sent by their parents.

Merlin watched as the pile of spices grew and couldn’t help but smile—he truly adored his classmates.

“Move aside, move aside! My family deals in spices—it’s just spices. I’ve got plenty!”

A chubby student came running, panting, carrying a massive bag of spices and threw it in front of Merlin.

Merlin was stunned by the half-human-high pile of spices. He would later make sure to see who had spent so lavishly—these spices were just as valuable as those given by Old Deng yesterday.

“Wait? I thought you weren’t in the Alchemy Academy,” Fitt said, noticing the newcomer’s hesitation.

The chubby boy looked a bit foolish, wearing a custom oversized uniform. The emblem was not Alchemy Academy’s, but that of the rarely-seen Ancient Ruins History department—a minor discipline devoted to studying ancient ruins and magical history.

“Not really. I’m Finley Dahl, my family runs the Silver Moon Trading Company. I’m here at the Arcane Academy studying Ancient Ruins History. I heard about this dish called Lotus Leaf Beggar’s Chicken and couldn’t resist joining the fun,” Dahl explained.

Merlin thought: Silver Moon Trading Company… that sounds familiar. Kris, eyes wide, exclaimed in disbelief:

“Silver Moon Trading Company? The one founded by the elves?”
