Chapter 109: Entertainment Items
A week had passed since Donny and Velvet returned to the royal capital.
As planned, Joel, Brittany, and Lua had set off for the border area where Lua had gotten lost, in order to investigate the mystery of the white smoke.
Apparently, the border region is quite far away. I offered to lend them a carriage and Ash, but it seems the area is inaccessible by carriage, so they went on foot instead.
Of course, I’m a bit worried, but with veteran adventurer Brittany and former Lusanso knight Lua with them, they should be fine.
Since there’s nothing more I can do, I’ll just pray for their safety… and think about how to use my NP.
I want to strengthen the [Otherworld Farming] skill and maybe get a new familiar to help with labor, but this time, I’ve decided to invest in entertainment.
I’m planning to splurge with a budget of 30,000 NP, which is about 100,000 yen in Japanese currency.
So the goal is: buy entertainment items worth 100,000 yen.
A manga volume costs around 600 yen, so I could technically buy 166 volumes.
Honestly, manga alone would be fine, but right now the solar generator is only being used for Sid’s DVD player, and it feels like a waste.
That leads me to think about buying a game console. But a TV console needs power for the monitor too, and according to the manual, the generator only runs a full charge for six hours if using a TV.
Sure, solar charging on the go is possible, but it still feels like a hassle to manage, so maybe it’s too early for a full console setup.
I’ll save that for when I can afford a second generator and instead go for a handheld console for now.
Naturally, that means a Nintendo Switch.
There’s no internet in this world, so no need for the OLED version—just the standard model is fine.
As for games, Mario Party and Super Smash Bros. should be plenty.
One small downside is that Smash Bros. might not have the full impact it usually does.
The real thrill is seeing characters from popular series clash with each other, which may not mean much in a world where those series don’t exist.
Anyway, I decided to spend 50,000 yen as follows:
Switch console: 32,000 yen
Mario Party (Joy-Con set): 10,000 yen
Super Smash Bros.: 8,000 yen
It’s quite a big spend, but I still have another 50,000 yen left, so I think it was a solid purchase.
Next, I’ll get a few board games and a bunch of manga.
I did want to buy some movies for group viewing too, but that’ll have to wait until I get another generator and a monitor or projector.
With a deep breath, I shifted focus to picking out which manga to buy.
After about 30 minutes of staring at my tablet…
I decided to continue the series Hunter x Hunter and One Piece.
I did consider that loading up on battle manga might not be ideal, but to me, the two greatest “30-volume satisfaction” series are Hunter x Hunter and Slam Dunk.
I thought about buying both, but since this world probably doesn’t have the concept of basketball, I skipped Slam Dunk and chose to continue One Piece, which had already received great reactions.
As for massive hits like Demon Slayer, Chainsaw Man, and Jujutsu Kaisen—those all came out during my workaholic days, so I never got around to reading them. They might be a good pick, but… I just can’t seem to take that leap into the unknown.
A sad trait of an aging man, I suppose.
I’ll get around to those three eventually. For now, I went with more Hunter x Hunter and One Piece.
As for board games, I chose:
Catan
Coyote
The Culprit Is Dancing (犯人は踊る)
These are great for larger groups, so I’m hoping we can break them out when lots of people come over.
Maybe I’ll even organize a board game tournament as a way to let the people who didn’t shine during the mock battle tournament show off their strengths.
…That said, Sheila is ridiculously strong at board games too.
She reads people’s expressions in an instant, so I’ve got a feeling she’ll be just as dominant here.
Anyway, that should cover everything I’m buying this time.
The bookshelf had already been made by Sid and Rozzo, so I started stocking it with the new manga in the rec room.
I lined up 32 volumes of Hunter x Hunter and volumes 11 through 60 of One Piece all at once.
There’s still plenty of space left, but seeing the shelves fill up gave me this oddly satisfying feeling.
I’ll read them at my leisure later, but first I’ll check if the Switch works.
It would be terrifying if it didn’t turn on after all that, but it booted up just fine—even in another world.
Maybe I’ll play it tonight with Sheila.
Grinning at how full the rec room is becoming, I added the three new board games to the board game shelf, completing the setup for now.
It’s gotten to the point where you could easily spend an entire day just hanging out in there. I splurged with 30,000 NP, but I have no regrets.
Looking forward to the next time Velvet visits or when Joel and the others return, I headed off to find Sheila.
