Chapter 46: Former Family Side — Meanwhile, at that time [Reina]

In the president’s office of the Amagasaki agency.

This place had long been a barely-used formality, but lately it was operating at full capacity.

In the quiet room where only the sound of typing could be heard, a sudden hysterical voice rang out.

“Aaaaargh!! Why do I have to work this much?!”

Reina, the president of the agency, let out her pent-up emotions.

“Ugh, this means I can’t go on vacation anymore! I was supposed to be sipping cocktails by the blue ocean and white sand, enjoying an early summer holiday… And Yuki, how dare you cancel it without asking?!”

“Given the current state of the agency, no one can afford to go on vacation right now…”

“So now you talk back to me, Yuki?! My, how bold you’ve gotten!!”

Reina shot Yuki a sharp glare and hurled childish, argument-like complaints at her.

“Say what you want about me…”

“Grrrr!!”

Still, Yuki, despite being visibly anxious, tried to stop her.

(I should’ve spoken up more strongly as Reina’s secretary from the beginning. If I had, maybe we could’ve prevented Go-kun from leaving… Maybe we could’ve avoided the scandals involving Ichika-chan, Mika-chan, and Mutsuki-chan.)

Yuki thought as she continued making phone calls, writing emails, and managing the schedule.

She had voiced her concerns before, if not forcefully. But Reina always ignored her suggestions and kept pushing the work onto her. It wasn’t fair for Yuki to blame herself for that.

Even Reina, who had screamed earlier, was starting to grasp—though with a somewhat unhinged mind—that things were dire.

That if someone wasn’t actively working, the agency had no future.

Currently, Yuki was managing things in coordination with Rima Harima, a new intern secretary.

With Ichika, Mika, and Mutsuki all on hiatus, the only active talents were Futaba, Aoi, Nana, and Yachiru. That was the only reason it was still manageable.

(There’s no way Go-kun did all this by himself… Unbelievable!!)

The more work she did, the more Yuki was overwhelmed with awe and admiration for Go.

Reina had been delegated some of Yuki’s usual responsibilities—like liaising with other company executives and handling parts of the recent scandals.

But she couldn’t slack off this time—Yuki was watching.

(I was supposed to be in Okinawa on vacation by now… How did I end up locked in this office doing paperwork?!?)

As Reina half-heartedly began her work, she dreamed of the vacation she never got to take.

The tasks were simple—mostly stamping approval seals on pending paperwork—but her lack of experience made her painfully slow. Still, it was better than not doing it at all.

“R-Right, Yuki! Let’s take a lunch break! You can’t work on an empty stomach, right? Let’s order something! Like eel—something to boost our energy, yeah?”

Reina made the suggestion with a hopeful expression.

“A lunch break sounds good.”

Yuki replied calmly.

“However, eel is a luxury item. It’s out of the question.”

“No way…”

Reina’s joyful face immediately clouded over at Yuki’s words.

“We also have to cut back on food expenses. This won’t erase our millions—or billions—in debt, but working with an awareness of the crisis helps us move forward. There’s no time to waste, so I’ve prepared this for you, President.”

“This is…?”

Yuki pulled out from her bag a jelly drink and block-type nutritional bars.

“You want me to eat this!?”

“Not to your liking…? Very well. Here, have some salad chicken instead.”

“I don’t want any of this!! I want eel! Eel, eel, eel!”

“Sorry, but that’s not possible…”

“Then fine! I’ll go out and eat it myself!!”

“Ah—President!!”

Unable to bear Yuki’s firm refusal any longer, Reina stormed out of the office.

Yuki was unable to stop her in the moment of chaos.

“Haah… So she only lasted through the morning, huh…”

Left alone, Yuki let out a deep sigh.

(If Go-kun were here, he would’ve brought me something delicious. He always had perfect timing—just when I was at my limit, he’d show up with rice balls and hearty miso soup, or sandwiches and vegetable soup… Everything was so good.)

Yuki reminisced about those days.

But realizing that her mind had wandered from work, she shook her head vigorously.

(No, no. I can’t lose focus now. Rima-chan is still a student and just an intern—I have to support and guide her. If it gets too much, I’ll need to make the call to let her go. Even though she says she wants to do her best, I can’t take that at face value. I have to… I have to be strong… I…)

With renewed resolve, Yuki gulped down yet another energy drink—she’d lost count of how many she’d had today.

Reina never returned, and Yuki continued the work alone.

The lights in the office finally went off a little after midnight.

Once again, Yuki didn’t go home.

She spent the night sleeping in the office.
