Chapter 96: The Final Battle
“…Hmm, fyaa. Ah, Sato-san.”
“Did you wake up? You could sleep a little longer if you’d like. What do you think?”
“I’m fine. I only slept for a little while, but it helped me recover.”
“I’m glad to hear that.”
After about 20 minutes, Sheila-san woke up, looking refreshed. The short nap turned out to be quite effective, so I’m relieved that she recovered even a little.
“Is Lime okay?”
“Yes. It seems monsters can use healing magic too, and Yui-san took care of it. She said Lime will be fine soon.”
“That’s a relief. Then, I have to do my best too.”
“Right. The final is against Ren-san, a tough opponent, but good luck!”
“Yeah, leave it to me.”
With a smile, Sheila-san responded, then, using it as a warm-up, headed toward the arena a bit earlier than expected. After a short while, Ren-san arrived as well, and finally, the first-ever mock battle tournament’s final began.
“It’s been longer than I thought, but this is truly the last match. Let’s both fight with all our strength!”
“Thank you for all your support up until now. Ren-san, I’m counting on you.”
“Good luck. I honestly didn’t expect you, Sheila-san, to be my opponent. I’ve seen your matches, and you’re really strong, so sorry, but I’ll be going all out.”
“Of course, bring it on.”
After exchanging handshakes, Sheila-san and Ren-san took their positions. A tense atmosphere filled the air, and I couldn’t help but feel nervous.
“Then, the final match—start!”
With Donnie-san’s signal, it was Ren-san who shot forward—no, it was Sheila-san who had been on the defensive until now. I didn’t expect her to strike first in the final, and I couldn’t help but let out a small gasp of surprise.
It wasn’t just me who was surprised; Ren-san seemed to be caught off guard too, as he appeared to hesitate on how to respond. Sheila-san didn’t miss the opportunity, making it seem like she was about to perform an upward strike, but quickly spun and attacked from the side, swinging her wooden sword.
The quick, flowing attack caught Ren-san off-guard, and she struck his side with the first blow. The unexpected turn of events sent a cheer through the audience.
With that single blow, the momentum shifted in Sheila-san’s favor. Responding to the crowd’s excitement, Sheila-san continued to press the attack. But Ren-san was the leader of the Hero Party, and despite being pushed back, he handled Sheila-san’s versatile strikes without losing his composure.
“Go, Sheila-san!”
I couldn’t hold back my excitement at the high-level swordplay, and I shouted in support. The fact that Sheila-san was one of the people engaged in such an incredible match made me feel like I was experiencing the most thrilling moment of my life.
Sheila-san didn’t retreat to defense, instead continuing her fierce sword clash with Ren-san. The next move came from Ren-san, who, after a brief pause, activated his skills to shift the momentum.
“[Physical Strengthening], [Ability Enhancement], [Powerful Arms]. Sheila-san, I’m sorry, but from here on out, I’m going all out.”
Ren-san’s body was enveloped in a red and yellow aura, and his movements visibly changed. Until now, he had only used [Physical Strengthening], but now he activated three skills at once.
His speed and attack quality were completely different from before, and with the shift in pace, Sheila-san’s guard was delayed by just a fraction of a second. Sheila-san’s greatest strength was her analytical ability, but the information she had carefully gathered was now useless, and the situation had completely reversed.
Even so, Sheila-san managed to just barely block the incoming attacks, but Ren-san didn’t stop there. He activated two more skills, and despite her best efforts, Sheila-san couldn’t keep up with the onslaught. She was sent flying by Ren-san’s devastating combo.
It’s said that the maximum number of skills an average person can use is two.
These skills are randomly assigned when someone first awakens them, so even if they have combat talent, the skills they receive might not be suited for battle. For example, Portia-san’s skill lets her predict the weather with a 50% chance of being correct.
Of course, weather is typically just sunny, cloudy, or rainy, so she could guess sunny most of the time without the skill, but the skill still counts.
In a world where many skills are practically useless in certain situations, Ren-san’s skills were all combat-oriented, and he had activated five at once. It was clear how unfair that was, and just how incredible the advantages of being a Hero were.
As I watched from Sheila-san’s perspective, I couldn’t help but think it was unfair. However, with my own [Otherworldly Farming] skill, I couldn’t exactly voice that complaint.
I continued to shout positive encouragement for Sheila-san, and despite being knocked around, she never let up on her attacks. It was like she was dancing, launching her attacks as gracefully as a performer.
Until the very end, there was hope for her victory, but after being easily knocked aside, Ren-san delivered a swift strike. His perfect hit landed, and Donnie-san declared the match over.
“That’s it. The winner of the final match is—Ren!”
“Yeah!”
Ren-san struck a triumphant pose, then gave a round of applause to Sheila-san, who had fought valiantly until the end.
It was frustrating, but seeing Ren-san’s overwhelming strength gave me a sense of clarity. He had the power to challenge the Demon King, and I was certain that Ren-san and his team would eventually defeat the Demon King.
Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling of frustration.
“Hey, Sato, your closing speech.”
“Oh, yes! First of all, congratulations to Ren-san for winning. You’ve been strong since the first round, and I’m truly moved to see the power of a Hero in action.”
“Thanks, Sato-san. I would’ve been completely defeated by Sheila-san if it weren’t for my skills. I have to admit, it’s really all about the skills.”
“That’s part of your power too, Ren-san. I’ll keep supporting you with all my strength.”
At that moment, applause erupted, and while the clapping continued, I took out the winner’s prize.
“Now, I’d like to present the winner’s prize. The winner receives this wristwatch, along with a bonus gift of an assortment of sweets.”
“Wow! A wristwatch…? I thought for a second, but this is really great. It’s hard to tell the time in the dungeon, and this world’s clocks are heavy and difficult to carry, so this will really help.”
I had thought that the choice might come across as a bit too understated, but I’m glad Ren-san seemed happy with it.
The wristwatch I selected was a G-SHOCK solar-powered model.
Not only is it durable enough to withstand being run over by a 20-ton truck, but it also excels in dustproofing, waterproofing, and wear resistance. Plus, with the built-in backlight, you can easily check the time even in dark environments.
The design is sleek and stylish, and since it’s solar-powered, it has a long-lasting appeal.
Despite all these features, it’s priced at an incredibly reasonable 20,000 yen or so.
In Japan, where smartphones are widespread, many people wore watches more for style, but in this other world, I understand how practical something like this is—especially after spending the winter months battling through dungeons.
“It’s a durable wristwatch, so please take it with you to the dungeon. Ren-san, congratulations once again.”
“Thank you for such an interesting event, and for such a great gift. The candy assortment is also really appreciated.”
“I’m glad you like it. Please enjoy a candy party with Mika-san and the others.”
With that, we finished a simple award ceremony.
Prizes were prepared for the top 3, but due to budget constraints, the only additional prize was the candy assortment.
As for second place, that went to Sheila-san, and third place was claimed by Lime, the winner of the match between Lime and Mash. I decided to hold off on giving them their prizes for now and deliver them later.
It had been a wonderful tournament, and I really wanted to talk about it with everyone while they were happily chatting, but… I had work to do—cooking.
So, I quietly slipped away from the group, heading back to the villa ahead of everyone.
