Chapter 390: Durability Test

The durability test of the armor coated with the magic potion began. To start, they decided to observe by casting magic on the armor placed on the ground. Since they had already conducted tests using reinforced glass beforehand, there didn’t seem to be any particular issues. The armor especially demonstrated high durability against fire.

“The durability of the armor itself is not a problem. It would have been ideal if we could test it while actually wearing it, though…”

“I don’t think that’s possible. It’s too dangerous. It should at least have the performance to save someone’s life in case of an emergency, so we should leave it at that.”

“That’s true.”

Lionel also seemed to oppose testing the armor’s durability while worn. Some of the knights looked eager to try, but that idea was rejected. They were placing too much faith in the armor’s performance.

Now, only the so-called “Legendary Armor” remained. Preparations were quickly completed, and the armor was placed on the ground.

“Just to confirm, how durable is this armor supposed to be?”

“It contains the hair of a Holy Dragon. Overall, I’d say its durability is quite high.”

“I see.”

With a solemn expression, Lionel nodded. I wasn’t lying, but I wasn’t sure what he was thinking. Wait—if I appraise the armor, I should be able to figure it out. Let’s see…

“…Lionel, that armor seems to have complete resistance to fire attributes.”

“……”

Ah, Lionel’s face looks terrifying. He seems like he wants to ask why I’m only mentioning this now. If he had known earlier, would he have refrained from using the ‘Holy Coating Agent’? No, he probably would have used it anyway—it increases safety, after all. This is more of a mental preparedness issue.

The durability test began. The same magic that was used on the previous armor was rendered ineffective before even reaching the armor. Rather than durability being tested, the spells simply couldn’t reach the armor at all. It was as if a thin soap bubble was protecting it—a mysterious sight.

They tried using stronger magic than before, but it was still useless. Especially against fire magic, it was at a level where you could say, “Isn’t there just a complete barrier in place?” It completely neutralized every attack. At this rate, it really might earn the title of “Legendary Armor” soon.

“Let’s end the durability test here. I’m sure you all understand, but make sure not to speak of what you saw here to anyone outside.”

“Sir, yes, sir!”

The knights and mages saluted in perfect unison. I thought, “As expected of the Heine Frontier Count’s knight order,” but at the same time, I had a strong urge to interrogate them for an hour about where they had learned that phrase. I didn’t, though—Fabienne was waiting.

And so, having somehow finished the armor’s durability test, I hurried back to the alchemy room. My schedule was already in chaos. I had planned to return much sooner.

Inside the alchemy room, Fabienne seemed to be steadily producing magic potions.

“It looks like you’re making the magic potions without any issues.”

“Welcome back. Did something happen on your end?”

Fabienne tilted her head in curiosity. She must have been wondering why I was late. Lionel had told everyone not to talk about it, but it should be fine to tell Fabienne. After all, she helped create that magic potion. She must be curious about how effective it was.

“I knew it, after all.”

When I told Fabienne about what had happened during the durability test, she looked troubled. She had also been involved in the creation of the legendary armor. It was only natural for her to make such a face. The fact that she said “I knew it” meant she had already anticipated it to some extent.

“It’s something that can’t easily be made public, so please don’t talk about it elsewhere.”

“I understand. I must be extra careful when making magic potions.”

“That’s right. You have to consider what kind of consequences it might bring if that magic potion spreads. You could also leave it entirely in someone else’s hands, but…”

Hearing that, Fabienne’s eyes widened in surprise. Of course, I had no intention of doing such a thing, but I believed it was necessary to consider the possibility that it could happen. There are magic potions that are absolutely needed in this world—like medicine that cures lung diseases. Fear of developing magic potions should not hold us back.

Since Fabienne had already made a sufficient amount of magic potion, we proceeded as planned to create the “water-repellent agent.” The required materials were green slime mucus, green neutralizer, detox grass, and mint. All of them were relatively easy to obtain.

“We’re using slime mucus again, aren’t we?”

“Slime mucus is an excellent material for magic potions. We’ll be using it in many ways from now on. There are many types of slime, and each one’s mucus has unique properties.”

When I said this with a smile, Fabienne gave me a slightly stiff grin. Could it be that she’s not fond of slimes? Well, she’ll just have to get used to it. Besides, we’re not extracting it directly from the slimes. The mucus is sold in bottles, just a thick, gooey liquid inside. It’s not that disgusting.

I carefully placed the ingredients into a saucepan and heated them slowly, making sure not to let them boil. If it boiled, the process would fail, so I had to maintain just the right temperature for the ingredients to blend evenly. This was actually quite difficult. A thermometer would be useful, but I didn’t have one yet. And making one myself wasn’t an option.

I carefully moved the saucepan closer to and away from the fire while stirring, and eventually, all the ingredients melted together, forming a smooth liquid. Almost there.

“It seems like adding ‘Holy Dragon’s Hair’ to this might enhance its effect.”

“That might be true, but for now, it’s best to avoid developing magic potions that use ‘Holy Dragon’s Hair’.”

“You’re right about that.”

Fabienne gave a wry smile. She was clearly eager to try it, but after considering the possible consequences, she had reached the conclusion that it was best not to. I agreed. If we weren’t careful, we might end up creating a product that repels rain with some kind of barrier effect. That would definitely stand out too much.
