Chapter 65: A Roundabout Effect

“When I entered the forest earlier, one of the guards thanked me. What’s up with that?”

Ivern, who had just arrived pulling a cart loaded with fertilizer, stopped before us and brought up the matter out of the blue.

“Thanked you? Did you do something?”
“Nope, not a clue. That’s why I’m asking you.”
“Hey, I don’t have any idea either. Besides, even if someone begged me to, I wouldn’t do anything that would make people in this world grateful to me.”
“Yeah, that sounds about right for you. So what was it all about?”

Ivern and I tilted our heads in unison, puzzled.

At that moment:

“Ah, good work, Ivern! I’ll take the fertilizer now.”

Nara suddenly appeared before us and, eyeing the cart Ivern had brought, spoke up.

Incidentally, I had taught Nara teleportation magic.

These days, as practice, he’s been traveling solo between this hidden village and the old Lindor farmlands.

“How’s the teleportation magic coming along? Are you getting the hang of it?”
“Yeah! I’ve constructed the magic circle so many times now that I’m really getting used to it!”
“Good. But just because you can teleport anywhere doesn’t mean you should go exploring willy-nilly, alright? You’re supposed to be dead to this world, remember? Especially don’t go to Admos, got it?”
“…Is that a challenge?”
“It’s not. If you go, you’ll never set foot here again.”
“…What about Eva?”
“She’s staying here, probably, since Leon and Ayla are so attached to her.”
“There’s no way I’m going!”

What’s with him acting like I’m holding Eva hostage?

If he breaks our agreement and leaves, that’s on him.

Well, he hasn’t broken it yet.

Kids his age are the type to want to do precisely what they’re told not to.

If you scare them with the consequences of their actions, they’ll usually listen.

Anyway, I should ask Nara too.

“Hey, Nara. You haven’t been sneaking off to Weimar or anything, have you?”
“What?! No way! I swear, I haven’t been anywhere but the village and the farmlands! Why? Am I under suspicion or something?”

He’s panicking a lot, probably because I just warned him not to go wandering and threatened to kick him out if he broke the rules.

“No, no, nothing like that. It’s just that Ivern got thanked by one of the guards here, but neither he nor I can think of why. So I thought maybe you had something to do with it.”

When I said that, Nara visibly relaxed.

“Ah, okay… whew. For a second, I thought I was being framed or something. I mean, I can’t beat you in a fight, Maya, so I thought I was totally screwed.”
“Sorry about that. So, do you have any idea why Weimar would thank us?”

Nara tilted his head, confused.

“Not at all. I’ve only been going between here and the farmlands. I haven’t even started distributing the rice we’ve harvested yet. Honestly, I think I’m even more isolated from this world than you, Maya-san. So, no, I have absolutely no clue.”
“Alright. Then what could it be?”
“Beats me.”
“What do you think?”

The three of us huddled together, scratching our heads, when Meyleen came out of the house.

“Hey, everyone! How about a tea break?”

Waving cheerfully at us, Meyleen called us over. We waved back and decided to take a break.

“Nara, take a break too. You can grab the fertilizer later.”
“Got it!”

All of us gathered around a table in the hidden village and had tea together.

In these situations, the children usually become the center of attention, but today I brought up Ivern’s story instead.

Leon and Ayla were struggling to break free from their mothers, who held them firmly in place.

Meyleen and Yulia had been mothers for just over a year now and were much better at handling the kids. They kept a firm grip on the children while still participating in the conversation.

“So, Ivern, you were thanked like that? Are you sure you don’t have any idea why? Maybe you gave the guards something as a gift?”
“If I did something like that, Kenta would glare at me. No way.”
“Good point. Then what was it about?”

Yulia, are you really okay just accepting that?

Well, she’s not wrong.

I may come across as narrow-minded, but I am narrow-minded.

Showing kindness to someone you’ve already brought to their knees only risks them growing arrogant.

Especially in this world—people here get carried away so easily.

That’s why I refuse to show mercy to anyone in this world, especially those involved in politics.

Since the military is a nation’s armed force, soldiers are part of the political structure.

I would never give them a gift.

And yet, we were thanked.

Why?

“Maybe something you did, Kenta, ended up benefiting Weimar indirectly,” Mayleen suggested.

“That’s the only explanation, huh?”

“Or maybe Weimar has just misunderstood something.”

Well, if that’s the case, I’m not about to go out of my way to correct them.

Even if it’s a misunderstanding, if they want to be grateful to me, I’ll let them.

It works out better for me in several ways.

So, I decided to just leave the matter as is.

That’s when Nara suddenly shouted.

“I just remembered! Isn’t that what they call the Butterfly Eight?”

“It’s Butterfly Effect.

What the hell is “Butterfly Eight”?

Are there eight butterflies involved or something?

“Oh, right… that’s what I meant…”

Nara blushed bright red, shrinking in embarrassment as the rest of us burst into laughter.

And with that, the conversation ended.

However, a few days later, Ivern brought up another strange topic.

“Hey, I heard a rumor that you’re trying to take over old Lindor. What’s that about?”

“What?”

No, seriously, what’s that supposed to mean?
