Chapter 11: Slime
“Ah, I see. So that’s what happened.”
“I’m sorry for worrying you. As I mentioned, this slime is completely safe.”
“I understand now. …But if you’re going to do something like this, please let me know beforehand! I was so startled I thought my heart would leap out of my chest!”
“I’m really sorry.”
After explaining everything in detail, I repeatedly apologized to Sheila-san.
She understood the situation, but as she said, I should have explained things to her in advance.
“If you’ve cleared everything up, then there’s no need to keep apologizing. But still… Sato-san, your skill is truly amazing. To think you can even turn monsters into allies by cultivating crops.”
“It costs 500 NP to make a single slime my familiar. That means it takes 250 Crackdraff to cover the cost, so I’m not sure if it’s entirely worth it.”
“Considering how fast they grow, I’d say 250 is a bargain. Plus, you can buy otherworldly ingredients with NP. That’s already more than valuable enough. By the way, if you bring Crackdraff from the royal castle, can those be converted into NP?”
Sheila-san, seemingly curious about my skill, eagerly asked various questions.
“Only items grown on this farm can be converted into NP. I once tried putting in some ingredients you brought, but nothing happened, so I’m certain of it.”
“I see. So there’s no choice but to work hard on farming.”
“Exactly. Once I save up 5000 NP, I plan to make a monster capable of serving as a guard my next familiar. That way, I can release you from your role as my bodyguard. So until I save up 5000 NP, I appreciate your continued sup—”
As I was about to finish speaking, I noticed Sheila-san’s expression suddenly darkened and stopped mid-sentence.
I couldn’t figure out why her mood had taken such a sudden turn.
Was the idea of 5000 NP overwhelming?
…No, while 5000 NP is indeed a lot, I’ve expanded the farmland, so harvesting 2500 Crackdraff isn’t an unattainable goal.
“…What’s wrong? You suddenly look upset. Was 5000 NP too much?”
“No, not at all. If anything… it’s too little. Although I haven’t known you for very long, I’ve come to enjoy life here, so I might have felt a bit lonely at the thought of leaving. That might have shown on my face.”
“Oh, so that’s why. I’m happy to know you’d feel lonely without me, Sheila-san. But it’s not like this is a permanent goodbye. As long as the king allows me to stay in this villa, I plan to continue living here, so even after you’re no longer my bodyguard, feel free to visit anytime.”
“Anytime? If that’s the case… I think I feel a little less lonely now.”
Even so, Sheila-san’s expression still seemed somewhat downcast.
Seeing her like that made me realize she was feeling the same sense of loneliness I was. The fact that I found joy in that realization made me wonder if I might be a terrible person.
“Yes, absolutely. I’ll definitely feel lonely living alone, so for my sake, please visit whenever you like. —Oh, look, Sheila-san! Lime already finished eating the garbage bag!”
“It’s true. …You know, slimes are actually kind of cute when you look closely.”
Sheila-san crouched next to me and began observing Lime as it ate the trash.
For some reason, it was oddly mesmerizing, and I found myself watching intently as well.
“Sheila-san, do you know much about slimes? I made it my familiar, but I’m not sure where it should live or anything like that.”
“Where it should live… sorry, I don’t really know. The only information I have is related to combat. Slimes are widely regarded as one of the weakest monsters, on par with goblins. Their only method of attack is to envelop their prey in their body and drown them. Normal slimes don’t carry poison, but since they’re gelatinous, there are rare cases of small children accidentally suffocating—though that happens maybe once every few decades.”
“So, they drown their prey using their bodies? That’s a surprisingly brutal way of killing for something that looks so harmless.”
“Hehe, most monsters have pretty brutal methods of killing. Still, I’ve never seen a monster that follows a human before. It’s truly fascinating.”
The previously dark expression on Sheila-san’s face had vanished, replaced by a slight smile, thanks to Lime.
Feeling relieved, I decided to ask her another question.
“Are there no people who tame monsters?”
“Well, there are professions like Beast Tamers or Monster Masters who can control monsters. However, they’re quite rare, so you almost never see them.”
“I see. Then, even though my profession is [Farmer], do you think it includes something like [Monster Tamer] as well?”
“I believe it goes beyond just that. From what I’ve heard so far… I think you’re far more remarkable than the other people who were transported here with you, Sato-san.”
“I doubt that. As I told you before, my stats aren’t impressive, and you saw how I froze in fear when facing the Fang Deer… I’m completely useless in combat.”
“Hehe… T-that’s true, I must admit… fufu, it was a bit… no, quite bad, wasn’t it?”
Sheila-san had started laughing, clearly recalling the time I froze in fear against the Fang Deer.
Though she tried her best to hold back her laughter, she wasn’t succeeding in the slightest.
Even I think it was a pitiful display, so I imagine it must have been an absolutely hilarious scene from the perspective of someone like Sheila-san, who fights so gracefully.
Being laughed at so much was a little embarrassing, but if it made Sheila-san smile again, then it was worth it.
“Well, that’s about the extent of what I can do—farming to make life a bit more comfortable.”
“I think that’s wonderful. And the otherworldly cuisine you make is truly delicious.”
“Hearing that you’re happy with it is the best reward. I’ll make more delicious dishes for you.”
“Yes! I’m really looking forward to it!”
Sheila-san said this with sparkling eyes, wiping drool from her mouth.
Watching her expression, I couldn’t help but laugh.
After observing Lime finish its meal for a little while longer, we went back to our usual routine of working on the farm together.
