Just another Isekai Lover~

Chapter 50: Luggage Carrier ⑧

I sat before the witch without touching the herbal tea she had prepared, recounting the entire sequence of events.

How our first meeting devolved into arguments and ended with us parting ways.

The witch nodded silently as she listened, then offered a faint, wry smile when I finished.

“Well, well, what an interesting turn of events.”

“I started thinking—did this happen on purpose?”

“Hmm, hmm. You think Emmy orchestrated it?”

“It feels intentional, no matter how I look at it.”

Emmy: Axe’s mother and Mineha’s master.
A current Grade II explorer and an acquaintance of the witch.
I knew nothing about her as a person.

But she sent us to meet, withholding key information.
Knowing her apprentice’s personality and her son’s insecurities.

She must have known what would happen. It’s as if everything unfolded as planned. That was my conclusion.

Still, I couldn’t help but think… Emmy seemed cold, even cruel in her approach.

Even though it involved her own son and apprentice.
Was it because she’s a Grade II explorer?

Regardless, her methods felt extreme.

“That does sound plausible, yes.”

The witch remarked.

“I don’t understand why she’d do such a thing.”

“I imagine you wouldn’t.”

“Do you have any idea why?”

“Well, well, let me think. Emmy once told me something, you see. She said, ‘My apprentice is talented, but she’s missing something essential as an explorer.’”

“Something essential?”

That kind of phrase gets thrown around a lot, but what could it mean?

“And, and, she also said, ‘My son Axe is hardworking and skilled. But he needs to come to terms with something. Until he does, he’ll always struggle. But that’s easier said than done.’”

“Come to terms with what?”

What could it be?

I think I vaguely understand her intent.
It seems to be something important for both of them.

Even so, Emmy’s approach feels reckless.
If handled poorly—

The witch, surprisingly hesitant, spoke softly.

“You know, Emmy can be scatterbrained and fond of surprises, but she’s always cared deeply for her son and her apprentice. She’s truly a kind person.”

“…Am I worrying too much?”

Hearing that made me feel like I was meddling unnecessarily.
After all, I’m just an outsider.

The witch smiled gently.

“No, no, Wof-kun, your concerns are valid. I’m sorry to have caused you so much unnecessary worry. Things weren’t supposed to turn out this way.”

“It’s just that I take any job I accept seriously and want to see it through properly.”

“Hmm, hmm. I’ve noticed you’re quite diligent about your work.”

“Do you think so?”

I thought it was normal to be diligent.
But… is it not normal in this world?

Come to think of it, I worked endlessly in my previous life.
Unpaid overtime was standard.

I don’t want to carry that workaholic mindset into this new life.
I’d rather not be a corporate drone across worlds.

“Fufu, Wof-kun, I find you very likable.”

“…You’re too close.”

She was incredibly close.
So close I could see myself reflected in her eyes—and her in mine.

“Oh my, how rude of me.”

Her lips moved at a distance where they could almost touch, then she pulled away smoothly.

“…No, it’s fine.”

It startled me.
Even like this, even now, the witch was stunningly beautiful.
Up close, her beauty was almost overwhelming.

Of course. She’s a witch.

“S-so, witch, what do you think I should do?”

“Oh, that’s simple.”

“Really?”

Her response caught me off guard.
Simple? The witch smiled.

“Yes, yes. Woff-kun, you don’t need to do anything.”

“…You mean just watch and wait?”

“Yes, yes, exactly. It’s ultimately an issue for them to resolve.”

“…I suppose you’re right.”

I smiled wryly, unable to argue.
That’s how it always ends. But it’s also the truth.

As for me…

I just want to do the job I’ve taken on properly.
And address any concerns that arise. But there may be nothing more I can do.

A Problem Between the People Involved.

That’s really all there is to it.

Well, at least I didn’t leave without any answers. I got something of a response.
With that, I decided it was enough and left the witch’s house.

Back in town.

I should head home and prepare for tomorrow… I thought vaguely as I walked along.

“Hey, you!”

A voice called out from behind me.
I didn’t think it was directed at me, so I kept walking.

“Don’t just ignore me! Your name was, uh… M-Mof?”

Cute.

Huh? Could she be talking about me?

It felt like she was, so I stopped and turned around.
And then I realized—it was me she was calling.

It was Mineha.

She flapped her wings slightly and gave me an irritated look.
