Chapter 212: Long-Distance Communication Magic Tools
“Long-distance… Ah! The thing you mentioned about mimicking the hand of the magic giant Golem and possibly being able to communicate by writing at a distance!?”
Eto exclaimed, remembering.
“Yes, that’s it. When it was just the arm, the format for exchanging information was unclear, so there was nothing we could do.”
Isamu replied.
“I see! So, if the format is written in Abel’s cockpit, the arm can receive it and move accordingly!”
Eto said, understanding.
“Exactly.”
Isamu said with a nod, then headed to the courtyard to investigate the cockpit again.
“Good morning, Isamu-sama!”
“Good morning, big brother!”
“Nii—”
“Ah, Liddell-san, Julius, good morning. Leo, good morning. Thanks for moving the cockpit.”
Isamu greeted as they arrived in the courtyard.
Liddell and Julius were inspecting the cockpit they had moved to ensure there were no issues.
Leo, the kitten that had grown attached to Julius in the Guardian Village, was perched on his shoulder.
Liddell had led the way, and Julius, using the magic giant Golem, had transported the cockpit.
Though Klaufendam had once been attacked by the magic giant Golem, after the return of the lord’s daughter Annemarie, Isamu, the wanderer, and the goddess Orihime, it had lost its terrifying reputation within just one day.
Additionally, Julius, who was extremely popular with the ladies, regularly piloted the Golem, which helped foster goodwill among the residents, as Nicolette had planned.
“Um, I believe it was around here…”
Isamu muttered, lightly stroking Leo’s throat before sitting down in front of one of the four pillars surrounding the cockpit.
He had previously noted that the magic circle used for sending movements was left commented out near this pillar.
“Ah, here it is. Hmm, this part sends the magic power, and this part converts it. Wow, this conversion formula is complicated… What are all these variables and numbers? There’s way too much magic power here…”
Isamuu murmured aloud while analyzing.
“Too much magic power? What do you mean?”
Eto asked, hearing Isamu’s muttering.
“Well, in order to represent a movement, a lot of information is required. And when converting that into magic power, it needs to be a huge amount.”
The traditional concept of magic circles was to convert a person’s movement into magic energy and send it remotely, where it would be converted back into a human movement to achieve remote control.
First, converting human movement into magic required a complex combination of magic power. Then, that magic was transformed into a form that could be sent over long distances, which caused the magic power to increase dramatically.
“When human movement is converted into magic power, it can maintain a three-dimensional shape, so it’s complex but not overwhelmingly large in volume. However, when converted into an unaligned wave of magic power for transmission, it needs to be flattened, which causes the magic quantity to increase exponentially.”
“Ah, so it’s like widening a trench if you want to flow a large amount of water in a short time, but you can’t do that here.”
Eto noted.
“Exactly. As the distance increases, more magic power is required to maintain the speed, making it less efficient and taking more time.”
“I see… Maybe that’s why this method wasn’t used. You can increase the magic, but there’s still a limit to how fast it can travel.”
Isamu nodded as he conversed with Eto and Willem.
“Well, it looks like we’ll need to make adjustments, but for now, let’s just aim to get it moving without worrying too much about efficiency and lag.”
“That’s true. We won’t know how much magic power is needed or how much time it will take until we try it out.”
Eto agreed.
“Right. Then, I’ll finish this part of the decoding first. After that, I’ll take a closer look at Abel’s machine and the arm from the Rock Desert.”
“Got it. In the meantime, is there anything I can do? The decoding is going to take a while, right?”
Willem asked.
“Yes, I think it’ll take two or three days… So, could I ask for two things?”
“Two or three, it doesn’t matter.”
Eto said.
“Hehe, thanks! First, I need a stand to fix the arm from the Rock Desert and a pen and paper that match the hand’s size. If possible, I’d like something that can write, but I’m not picky about the pen and paper.”
“Mm, a stand and a pen… So, you just need the arm to be able to write, right?”
“Yes, that’s right. And the second thing… I’ll show you with a picture.”
Isamu said, walking back to the workshop and rummaging through a drawer. He pulled out several sketches and spread them out on the desk.
“I want something like this. Of course, I don’t expect it to be ready in two or three days, so just starting with a prototype would be fine.”
“What is this? It’s quite an unusual shape…”
Eto commented, looking at the sketches.
“Don’t you have anything like this here?”
“No, I’ve never seen anything like this.”
“Actually, I don’t know how it will work until we try it out, so let’s just experiment and shape it as we go. This is more about physical construction than the magic tools, so I’m counting on you!”
“Leave it to me. Oh, let me measure the weight and length of the magic giant Golem’s arm later. We can use the actual object for analysis, right?”
“Yes, thank you!”
“It’s been a while since I’ve made a new magic tool, so I’m excited!”
Eto said, laughing heartily as he waved the sketches before heading back to his work area.
“Alright, let’s get serious with the decoding!”
Isamu said, as he stretched his arms and made his way back to the garden to dive into decoding the magic circles.
Three days later.
On the desk in the lab, there was a complex magic circle on a base with a 50 cm rod and the arm from the Rock Desert.
From the shoulder of the arm, several thick, fettuccine-like strands extended, currently being connected to the magic circle by Yu.
Upon closer inspection, magic circles were also drawn on the fettuccine-like strands.
“Fuu, I finally managed to connect it…”
Isamu muttered, his eyes slightly shadowed, cracking his neck.
“This was quite a big task.”
Willem sighed, helping with the connection.
The decoding of the magic circles on the cockpit side had gone relatively smoothly. The most difficult part—the conversion of magic power for transmission—had been successfully achieved as the notes had described.
However, the theory behind this part was still not fully understood. For now, the goal was simply to get it working.
The problem lay with the arm.
After all, there was only the arm. It was expected that if the arm received the magic information in the correct form, it would move, but the correct form was completely missing.
In the end, almost all of the initial magic circle concepts left on Abel’s magic golem had to be reviewed.
Based on that, a new magic circle was drawn to separate the part that received the transmitted magic and sent it to the arm, and the arm was then connected.
The “fettuccine-like” cables were the connection cables used to correctly transmit magic information.
“Now the arm side should be fine. Eto, how’s the control side?”
“Yeah, this side should be fine too.”
When Isamū looked over, Eto was inspecting something that seemed to be the control seat.
There was a platform about 10 cm high and around 1 meter square, with four columns, each about 5 cm in diameter, standing at the corners.
It was much more compact than the second-generation control seats.
Abel’s control seat, in essence, seemed to depict two different systems, requiring a large area despite the detailed drawing.
However, for some reason, the other second-generation control seats, aside from Abel’s, also had the same size as Abel’s.
Whether it was due to parts being standardized, the desire for a more spacious design for mass production, or some other reason…
At this point, it was hard to say, but since Isamu’s new prototype eliminated such excesses, it was more compact.
“Now, shall we start it up?”
“Yeah, I’m looking forward to this.”
“Ah, this is exciting.”
With Eto and Villem watching, Isamu first activated the magic circle on the control seat.
With the familiar “Fon” activation sound, the magic circles drawn on the platform and columns lit up.
“Okay, it’s properly activated. Eto, please handle the arm.”
“Got it.”
When Eto touched the magic stone for activation on the arm’s connected board, it also activated without issue.
“…It seems fine.”
“Yeah, there doesn’t seem to be a problem up to this point. Now, let’s try moving it.”
Nodding at Willem, who was observing from another direction, Isamū stood in the center of the magic circle on the control seat.
“If everything’s been recreated correctly, the arm should move the same way when I move my right hand.”
Saying this, Isamū put on the ring-shaped magic devices on each of his five fingers, and a bracelet-shaped magic device on both his forearm and upper arm, activating all of them.
These magic devices released the flow of magic when the body moved, and the devices on the control seat would read and interpret this information.
Though there were no actual magic devices for the body, the magic circle was left as a note on Abel’s control seat, so it was successfully recreated.
“Now, since the arm is not fixed, I’ll just move my fingers first.”
Saying this, Isamū lightly bent his index finger, which had the ring on it.
In that instant, the un-attribute magic stones embedded in the rings and bracelets briefly glowed. In response, the magical circles on the platform and the four corner columns lit up.
Next, the rod on the arm’s board, connected to the magical circle, glowed and the light traveled through the magic circle on the board and the fettuccine-like cable’s magic circle.
The onlookers watched in silence, holding their breath.
However, after waiting for 10 seconds, then a minute, the arm on the desk did not move.
