Chapter 202: Fortifying the Camp
“Alright… the tents should be good enough like this.”
Diverting his gaze from what could only be described as culinary dark magic, Rest finished setting up the tents with Ostrey.
They had assembled three tents in total: one for Ostrey, one for Yuri, and one for Urla and Arlie. For certain reasons, Rest did not set up a tent for himself.
Night watch wouldn’t be necessary; soldiers from the Lavender Border Territory, under Ostrey’s command, would be joining them and taking shifts.
“It’s done, Count Clover.”
Ostrey rotated his shoulders as he expressed his gratitude to Rest.
“Thank you for helping out. We managed to finish ahead of schedule thanks to you.”
“It’s no trouble… You should rest now. I’ve got one more task to take care of.”
“Is there something else to do? I can assist you.”
“No… this is something only I can handle. Take it easy for now.”
Waving off Ostrey, who started to rise, Rest walked away from the tents.
He headed to the center of the camp, focused his mind, and began channeling his magic energy.
“Barrier.”
With that, he activated a newly learned spell.
The spell, taught to him by Jarana Maitis, created a barrier to ward off magical creatures.
A white line appeared above Rest’s head, tracing geometric patterns in the air.
“And… [Transcription].”
The patterns expanded and imprinted themselves on the ground, forming a completed magic circle.
An invisible barrier spread outward from the circle, covering an area of about 100 meters around the camp, repelling any monsters within its range.
“This should keep worms from emerging from the ground… Not that it’s likely, since we’re outside the wetlands and have guards on watch. Still, better safe than sorry.”
After all, this place used to be a monster-infested region—a veritable nest of monsters. With Yuri and Urla present, it was a matter of life and death. Being overly cautious seemed prudent.
“Oh, Rest, did you set up a barrier?”
“It’s so pretty…”
Noticing what Rest was doing, Yuri and Urla approached, interrupting their cooking.
Their aprons were stained with green, black, and red fluids—evidence of some questionable culinary endeavors.
“…What is that?”
“Ah, well, you see, when we were cutting the worms, some—”
“Actually, never mind, I don’t want to know.”
Realizing he was about to hear something he’d rather not, Rest quickly stopped the conversation. Clearing his throat, he began explaining the barrier.
“This is a warding barrier to repel monsters. As long as it’s active, they shouldn’t come near us.”
“Whoa, that’s amazing!”
“Rest is so skilled!”
Even Arlie joined Yuri and Urla in praising him.
“But… how long will this barrier last? I’ve heard that barriers like this consume a lot of magic energy.”
“It’s permanent… as long as I stay here.”
“…What?”
“Watch this.”
Rest sat down in the center of the magic circle.
He could feel the barrier drawing magic energy from him, but with his infinite reserves of magic, it wasn’t an issue.
“This barrier draws energy from whoever is at its center. As long as I’m here, it won’t disappear.”
“Will you be alright, Rest? We have investigations to do tomorrow.”
Arlie asked skeptically.
Shrugging, Rest replied.
“Don’t worry. I’ll conserve enough energy for tomorrow. I won’t be a burden, so don’t worry about me.”
“…I see. As long as the lady is safe, I have no objections. My apologies for overstepping.”
Arlie said, bowing slightly.
“It’s fine. Worrying about your master is only natural.”
If Rest were to run out of magic energy, Urla, who was with him, would also be put in danger. Arlie’s concern was understandable for that reason.
(Well, not that I can actually run out of magic…)
“I’ll set up my tent here and sleep. You all camp over there. Don’t step inside the magic circle—it’ll drain your energy.”
Tonight would be the rare occasion Rest spent the night alone.
Viola and Primula weren’t around, and he’d be separate from Yuri as well. It was both a relief and a disappointment—a conflicted feeling typical of any man in such a situation.
“Got it… In that case, I’ll make sure to whip up the best meal ever to keep you going!”
Yuri thumped her chest confidently, her declaration full of spirit.
“I’ll prepare a feast full of nutrients to help you recover your magic!”
“Hmm… lots of nutrition.”
“I was planning to throw it out, but… perhaps I should use those testicles after all. They seem like they’d be invigorating. Though getting rid of the smell will be a challenge.”
“Let’s try hard.”
“Te-testicles? W-wait a second! What are you planning to make me eat!?”
The women cheerfully skipped back to the cooking area, ignoring Rest’s protests.
He thought he heard some horrifying words, but unable to leave the magic circle, Rest could only watch as the three women walked away, leaving him with an uneasy feeling.
