Chapter 415: Provocation

Tauro realized that the crops that were the mountain village’s source of income seemed to be the raw materials for illegal drugs, so he couldn’t help but ask a lot of questions.

“By the way, where are those leaves being shipped to?”

Tauro asked the village chief frankly.

“? Who’s this little boy? Is he your apprentice, garde.”

An apprentice is a word that refers to a young person who is indentured to a merchant or the like, and it seems he thought I was a kid working for Garde.

“No, he’s a temporary adventurer we hired. The previous adventurer retired, so we hired a new one.”

“You’re an adventurer at that age?! Wow, that’s amazing… The shipping destination is – oops, I can’t tell that to outsiders.”

The village head almost let his guard down, thinking he was dealing with a child, but stopped himself from answering.

“I don’t want to believe it’s so, but has it been brought to the capital?”

Tauro paid no attention to the person’s refusal and continued speaking.

“Wha!? W-why…? Well, as I said before, it’s an important source of income for us. I told you I can’t talk about it!”

He is an honest village chief.

 For Tauro, that was enough.

“Tauro-san, the village chief is also in trouble, so could you please stop pursuing this?”

 Garde hurriedly intervened, then continued.

“…Well then, let’s start the transaction. Village Chief, is the usual amount okay?”

“Ah, yeah. Right, I’ll have the usual amount, please. And—”

As the village head began to deal with Garde for bulk purchases, a new customer appeared.

“Hm? What’s this, chief? Aren’t you supposed to be doing business with us today?”

He was accompanied by a slender man dressed as a merchant with sharp eyes, and five well-built men with swords strapped to their waists who seemed to be acting as guards.

“Hi, Hi, Grado-san! This is Garde, who usually comes a few days later to deliver our farm produce. Garde, this is Grado-san. He is the merchant who has saved our village.”

Garde realized that the man he was speaking to was a merchant and offered a handshake with a smile.

The merchant, Grado, ignored the handshake.

“Village chief, we have business appointment today. I’m going to need you to give us priority. Or do you want to stop doing business with us because you want crops you can buy anytime you want?”

Grado gave Garde a condescending glance and then questioned the village chief in a high-handed manner.

“I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to do that! I’ve known Garde for a long time, and he’s always been kind to us when it comes to food, so I can’t just be indifferent to him… Of course, I’m grateful to you too Grado-san, but I would never think of stopping doing business with him!”

The village chief hastily tried to excuse the merchant for this arrogant attitude.

“Don’t you understand? We are the most important business partner to this village. You should leave your crops behind and disappear quickly. We don’t have time for this.”

The merchant Grado makes fun of Garde and Tauro’s group, including the children, and tries to chase them away.

“Is that because you people want to make lots of harmful medicines with the plants you buy here?”

Tauro, for some reason, didn’t try to weigh his thoughts, but instead asked a question that got straight to the heart of the matter.

“! ─ ─ What is this, kid……? Looking more closely, it looks like there are two kids in the mix, looking like adventurers, but who would know if you went missing in a village in the mountains like this?”

Grado was a little upset at having been caught off-guard, but, perhaps deciding that they outnumbered them in numbers and quality, he did not change his high-handed attitude; on the contrary, he signaled with his eyes to the strong men he was leading.

At the merchant’s signal, the strong men slowly began to move to surround Tauro and his group.

Surprisingly, their movements are not amateurish.

They seem to be very skilled.

“…I see. Poison can also be used as medicine if used properly, so I tried to provoke you quickly, but unfortunately it turned out to be a bad use of it…”*

 Tauro lets out a sigh.

Ragune and the others, understanding Tauro’s thoughts, reach for their weapons.

“Chief, you must keep this matter a secret from everyone. Otherwise the village may suffer a calamity.”

The merchant Grado instructed the village chief to keep quiet about what he was about to do.

“Ahhh…!”

The village chief is distraught and doesn’t know what to do.

Garde was in the same state, and was on the verge of losing his nerve in this situation filled with murderous intent.

The five strong men then drew their weapons and readied them.

Two with swords, one with a spear, one with a bow and arrow, and one with a dagger.

“Let’s deal with the man with the large sword and the woman with the spear first! The rear guard will take care of the two brats!”

A man with a scar on his cheek who seemed to be the leader of the group of strong men and was holding a sword, ordered his comrades to attack Ankh, the man with the large sword.

Another man with a sword joins him.

The man with the spear challenged Ragune to a spear fight.

The archer, probably expecting that Zion would use support magic, quickly aimed an arrow at the hooded figure.

At the same time, the man with the dagger aimed at Tauro, who was wearing a small sword at his waist.

 Tauro’s group quickly returned fire.

Tauro nimbly dodges the close-range attacks of the dagger man, taking advantage of his agility.

That being said, inside he was breaking out into a cold sweat.

 These guys are pretty strong!

Tauro thought as he drew his small sword and lightly slashed at the wrist holding the dagger in time with the dagger man’s thrust.

The Dagger Man was unable to counter Tauro’s divine counterattack, and after being injured, dropped his dagger.

Tauro immediately stepped within reach of the man and plunged his short sword into his right leg, taking away his will to fight.

Decchi is a word that refers to a young person who is indentured to a merchant’s house.
