Chapter 21: Humans and Demons Are the Same

“So, did Mona really quit the military?”

This question came from a horned man in the dining hall within the Demon Kingdom Army’s training grounds. He was the same man who had been present in the command tent during the recent Weimar conflict.

Listening to him was another man in the tent, one with pointed nose and ears.

“Yeah. Apparently, her parents back home fell ill. She retired to take care of them.”

The shorter man replied.

The larger man let out a sigh of disappointment.

“Too bad… Mona was in great shape. I was hoping I might ask her out sometime.”

“…Keep your thoughts to yourself, Decker.”

“Still as uptight as ever, aren’t you, Cornel?”

It seemed the horned man’s name was Decker, and the one with pointed ears was Cornel. When Cornel reprimanded him, Decker shrugged as if to say, ‘what can you do.’

“This isn’t about being ‘uptight.’ I’m telling you not to view a colleague that way.”

“But come on, there are others in the army who have office romances. How is that any different? If they didn’t look at each other that way, those relationships wouldn’t exist.”

“…There’s a difference between a romantic relationship and one that’s purely physical.”

“Oh, good point.”

Decker laughed, and Cornel looked at him with exasperation.

Interactions like these are universal, whether among humans or demons. It shows they’re not so different after all.

“But still, losing Mona is a blow. And not because of her looks—she was the best in intelligence gathering.”

“Agreed. Her skills were unparalleled in the Intelligence Division. She was even being considered for the next head of intelligence.”

“Yeah, but if her parents are sick, there’s not much you can do. If my mom were to fall ill, I’d head home right away.”

“…”

“What’s wrong, Cornel?”

“Oh, nothing.”

Something about Decker’s words unsettled Cornel, though he couldn’t quite put his finger on why.

“So, what’s the situation with Weimar? What’s the human side up to?”

“Hm? Oh, they’ve completely withdrawn their troops. According to the Intelligence Division, some soldiers on the ground wanted to counterattack, but the higher-ups ordered a retreat.”

Decker folded his arms, furrowing his brow.

“Interesting. The humans have always been so determined to invade our land… Think there’s something fishy going on?”

“Who knows?”

“Oh, so you’re having lunch too?”

Decker and Cornel looked up to see a large man approaching—the commander from the recent battle.

“Ah, Commander Yaman. Good work, sir.”

“Good work, sir.”

“Thanks. Mind if I join you?”

Commander Yaman, as he was called, sat down beside Decker.

“So? What were you two discussing so seriously?”

Decker filled Yaman in on their earlier conversation.

As he listened, Yaman paused in eating, turned to the two, and spoke in a hushed tone.

“You both know that Mona was sent to investigate Kenta Maya, correct?”

“Yes.”

“Yeah, it was supposed to be her last assignment.”

“Exactly. In her report, it seems that rather than forming an alliance, Weimar and Kenta Maya ended up as enemies.”

“?!”

Decker and Cornel almost voiced their surprise aloud, but managed to hold back.

“The reason is unclear, but apparently Weimar is so preoccupied with the fallout that they can’t focus on us anymore.”

“Huh… that makes sense.”

Decker said, nodding.

Cornel, however, looked visibly displeased.

“Why do humans always cause trouble for themselves? I don’t know what they fought over, but isn’t Kenta originally on their side? They declare him a wanted man and then get into a dispute over it? How foolish.”

Yaman, hearing Cornel’s sharp words, snorted in agreement at the humans’ missteps.

“Hmph. They must be fools. That’s why we demons have had to endure their trouble for so long,” Yaman said.

“No kidding!”

Decker burst into laughter at Yaman’s comment, his voice echoing through the hall.

Beside him, Cornel chuckled quietly.

“Well, with things like this, it’s probably safe to leave Weimar alone for a while. However, other countries still haven’t lifted Kenta Maya’s wanted status. It seems the human nations aren’t unified. For now, it’s a matter of everyone watching and waiting.”

With that, Yaman concluded his thoughts.

But his prediction would soon be proven wrong—in a very different way than expected.
