Chapter 410: Family Dinner Party [Termly].
The dinner that day was a lively affair with Tauro and the Count and Countess Graunewald.
At first, Ragune and the others had been very careful, wanting to make sure that Tauro and his family had a meal together for the first time in a long time as just parents and child, but Countess Aida told them there was no need to worry about it at that point, and they decided that everyone would just eat together.*
So it became a kind of free and easy gathering
However, surprisingly, although Ragune was a hearty eater, she also had a fair grasp of the proper dining etiquette for nobles, and so did Zion.
On the other hand, Ankh, who had a long relationship with Count and Countess Graunewald, was the one who was showing poor manners, but Count Graunewald just laughed it off, saying, “That’s just the way it is.”
“Even so, I’m amazed by you, Zion-chan. I heard that you were disciplined by your mother, but to have her teach you table manners as well, your mother must be more than just a commoner beastman.”
Count Graunewald was impressed by Zion.
“My mother was a cat person who knew everything. I don’t remember, but I heard that my father was just a peddler. …… I don’t know much more than that, but I never thought that one day what I learned from my mother would come in handy in this way.”
Zion replied and brought the dessert cake to her mouth with relish.
“I see. If we could only find out where your father was from, we could search for your relatives. Do you have any leads?”
“I have a ring that belonged to him, but when I had it appraised, it was a cheap mass-produced item that had no value, so I don’t think it will lead us anywhere.”
Zion showed a glimpse of the small bag hanging from her neck, then quickly withdrew it.
“I see… So you don’t have any family on your mother’s side?”
Count Graunewald must have heard that Zion was all alone in the world, and perhaps out of sympathy, he asked if he could be of any help.
“My mother told me that my grandfather and grandmother died early on in life. But she used to tell me that she didn’t feel lonely because I was with her.”
Zion also remembered this and cast down her eyes, perhaps feeling lonely.
“Oops, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t ask too many questions.”
Count Graunewald reflected.
“No, it’s all right. I have friends now, Tauro-sama, Ragune-san, and Ankh-san!”
Zion replied with a smile.
“Yes, Count. You are so quick to take an interest in other people’s lives.”
Ankh, who had probably been asked the same question before, was making fun of Count Graunewald.
“Hahaha, that’s for sure. It’s a bad habit of mine. I shouldn’t be too curious.”
Count Graunewald laughed and chuckled as he gulped down the liquor in his hand.
From there, they moved on to talking about Tauro.
I also quickly told him about my activities in Caxat and the difficulties the deputy was facing.
“There is no shortage of people who could take charge of the city of Caxart, but they have already been entrusted with other cities. I was just turned down the other day. Tauro, if you find any good people on your travels, I would appreciate it if you would report back to me.”
It seems that Count Graunewald trusts Tauro’s eyes.
“I understand. By the way, is the person who turned you down by any chance Baron Wasan the Mage?”
Tauro asked, as a thought occurred to him.
“That’s right! ─ ─ How did you know? I offered to raise his status to that of a baronet, but he said he doesn’t currently have the qualifications, and that just governing the city is enough for now. Speaking of which, I also received a report that he met with the territorial inspector, did something happen between you and Mage Baron Wasan?”
“It’s not exactly that anything special happened, but there was something about the matter with his son…”
Tauro explained that he was on a trip.
“…I see. So, you’re telling me that he’s been remorseful and that’s why he turned it down.”
Count Graunewald and Lady Aida nodded happily at their son’s success,
“By the looks of things, his son is going to make a fine successor. He might even become your right-hand man in the future, Tauro.”
And then they started really talking,
He also reported that there were other bandits and that the remnants of an assassination guild had infiltrated the territory.
“…… hmmm. I had received the report, but it was a close call. …… I have told the leaders of each town and village to be on their guard against anyone who cannot prove their identity, but they are not being thorough. I don’t want the land to become unlivable because we are overly vigilant. As for the bandits, I’ve ordered a hunt for the remnants in the area, so I think we should be fine, but as for the remnants of the assassination guilds, it will be difficult…”
“I think it will be alright. The dragon warriors have scattered all over to hunt down the remnants, so I think it’s only a matter of time.”
Tauro tried to reassure Count Graunewald.
“That’s right. No one can escape when pursued by the finest warriors of our dragon race!”
Ragune, a little drunk, boasted proudly.
“Fufufu. That’s reassuring, dear.”
Countess Aida nodded her head reassuringly.
“Speaking of which, there’s something I heard from Ankh—”
Tauro informed him of the possibility that the illegitimate son of the previous Count Graunewald was in the territory.
“Hahaha! Such stories are common. There have always been rumors in Caxart that I may have a younger sibling. I’ve had them look into it, but all they find is nothing but baseless rumors. If there really was one, I would be able to leave some of the work to them and make my life easier.”
Count Graunewald, who was probably very busy at the moment, replied in a way that could be taken as either a joke or his sincere feelings.
Then his wife, Countess Aida, perhaps trying to change the subject, made a suggestion.
“Oh right! We’ve decided to hold an unveiling party for Tauro-san in a month, we are going to invite representatives from each town and village to the event, so Tauro-san, please visit as many towns and villages as you can during the month and interact with the people there. Of course, you have to hide the fact that you are our child. And on the day, we want to surprise everyone.”
It was a suggestion from the mischievous wife.
Count Graunewald also chuckled at this.
“Oh, come on, let Tauro have his way with his adventures.”
But since he seemed to be enjoying himself a little, I guess I had to respond to him.
“I understand. So far, I’ve been doing this without even identifying myself, so it’s not a problem. Then I will go around for a month.”
Tauro had one more thing to look forward to thanks to his mother Aida’s suggestion.
