Halloween SS: “Tasting Session” & “Trick or Treat x2”

This time, it’s a short story (SS) featuring Halloween elements (albeit a bit late).

As usual, please enjoy the SS without worrying too much about the timeline or minor details…!

There are three consecutive stories, so I hope you enjoy them.

“Tasting Session”

Autumn had arrived, changing the appearance of the trees planted within the academy grounds.

Thirty minutes had passed since Ren, summoned by Klonoa to the principal’s office, was served tea by her. Outside the open window, the voices of students enjoying their after-school activities could be heard.

“It’s already autumn, isn’t it?”

“Yes, it is…”

The two sat facing each other.

Klonoa, seated opposite Ren, looked radiant and beautiful, her smile shifting from enigmatic to playful.

“Just being invited to talk is one thing, but today, Klonoa-san, you seem different,” Ren remarked.

“In what way?”

“You seem… restless.”

Klonoa chuckled, “Pinpoint! Absolutely correct!”

“Recently, we haven’t had any major events, so I wanted to do something for this autumn. I’ve even discussed it with the board,” Klonoa said.

“So, are you leading some event?”

“Yes. I’m planning to hold a fun event related to the harvest festival!”

Klonoa then showed Ren her handwritten event plan, filled with cute notes like “Highlight this!” and “Consider which is better!”

“I thought about decorating the school with magic and giving it a different atmosphere,” she explained.

“That sounds nice. But won’t the school’s reputation or something be a concern?”

“Don’t worry. I’ve negotiated that with the board.”

As expected of Klonoa, caring for her students, the plan was almost finalized.

She had been a bit sleep-deprived lately, working on the project.

“Why did you call me here, though?”

“Eh? Just to brag!”

“About this plan?”

“Yes! I worked hard on it and wanted to show it.”

Klonoa’s witch-like, expectant smile made Ren sincerely compliment, “It’s impressive.”

Pleased, Klonoa’s smile widened, and sparkles began to float from her witch hat, a sign of her joy.

“How about we offer a unique menu in the cafeteria?” Ren suggested casually.

Klonoa, interested, said, “The cafeteria?”

“Wouldn’t it be nice for the harvest festival? Special menus with regional ingredients would delight the students and give back to the associated merchants—”

“Yes! That’s a great idea!” Klonoa agreed enthusiastically, pulling out her wand and conjuring paper and pen to jot down notes.

“What kind of dishes do you think would be good?” she asked.

“I can’t think of any off the top of my head, but the main street restaurants seem popular for their autumn vegetable dishes and fruit cakes.”

“Really? I didn’t know that.”

“Yeah. It seems to be increasingly popular.”

Ren remembered Licia and Fiona also being interested in it.

The next day, which conveniently was a holiday, they continued their discussion.

Ren, accompanied by Licia and Fiona, explained to Klonoa the latest popular menus and autumn specials, which she listened to with great interest.

Eventually, they decided to try making some of these dishes themselves, starting with simple ones that Klonoa was curious about.

They thought of going to the main street to buy some but decided it was better to try making them first, as the streets would be crowded on a holiday. They planned to visit the main street restaurants another day.

The cafeteria was empty, giving them a private space. Ren, entering the kitchen, felt strange seeing the counter from the other side.

“All the ingredients are ready,” Klonoa informed.

They found autumn produce in wooden boxes that Klonoa had ordered based on Ren’s information.

“Which should we start with?”

“How about this? I had a similar dessert with Sera before, and it was really delicious.”

“Okay, let’s start with that!” Klonoa agreed, and they began preparing ingredients: autumn vegetables, sugar, flour…

Ren thought he might be more of a hindrance, so he decided to try making another dish that caught his eye.

“Ren-kun? Is something wrong?”

“Just curious about something. Can I try making it?”

“Of course! But be careful with the knife!”

“Thank you. I’ll use that table over there.”

Ren borrowed some cooking tools and started following the recipe: “Cut this, boil, then strain…”

He muttered about the sharpness of his magical sword compared to the kitchen knives, but proficiently followed the recipe.

After a while, Ren put his dish in the oven and joined the others, who were also finishing up.

“How did it go, Ren?”

“I followed the recipe, but I’m not sure what will come out of the oven.”

“Don’t say weird things.”

“No, really. I’m half serious.”

They laughed at Ren’s half-joking, half-serious comment.

When the baking was done, they gathered around the oven.

Klonoa opened the oven, and the baked goods came out perfectly shaped.

“That’s great. They turned out well.”

“They smell wonderful.”

Fiona and Licia sighed in relief, doing a little high-five.

Now they would taste them to see if they were good enough for the cafeteria’s seasonal menu.

As they set the treats on a plate, Licia asked, “How about Ren’s?”

She approached Ren, who had just taken his baking out of the oven, filling the air with a sweet aroma.

Ren, wearing oven mitts, looked unexpectedly fitting in the kitchen, showcasing a different charm from his usual sword-wielding persona.

“Licia, how did yours turn out?”

“I think they came out alright. But the taste is what matters.”

Licia’s gaze dropped to Ren’s hands.

“Ren’s sweets look delicious.”

Despite the simple appearance, the sweets were neatly made, showing Ren’s dexterity.

They brought the completed sweets to a table, and Ren served tea for everyone.

They tasted each sweet, savoring and smiling.

When they tried Ren’s creation, Licia and Fiona exclaimed, “Delicious…!”

Klonoa echoed, “Mmm! Really good!”

Relieved, Ren was glad they liked it.

After an hour, the sweets were gone, and they spent a relaxed time chatting about unrelated topics.

As they left the cafeteria and went to the courtyard, the sky turned a reddish hue.

“I haven’t had such a fun day off in a while,” Klonoa said, her usual burdens as principal lightened for the moment.

Before leaving, they checked some deliveries at the academy.

Inside a large wooden box were decorations for the upcoming event. Klonoa planned to use magic for the major decorations, but these items were for the smaller details.

She pulled out a large pumpkin, hollowed out with a face carved into it, big enough for an adult to wear.

“Haha, it’s so big, I could wear it!”

Ren tried it on, causing Licia and Fiona to giggle at the unusual sight.

“Trick or Treat: Licia’s Case”

On an autumn day, after practicing swordsmanship at the Lion Holy Church, Ren and Licia were walking through the imperial city.

Not heading to the nearest station, they noticed the town looked different from usual, with decorations for the upcoming harvest festival.

“It’s different around this time of year.”

“The restaurants on the main street have autumn-special menus.”

“Really? Like what?”

“Dishes with autumn vegetables… and cakes with autumn fruits…”

The shops, not just food-related, were also adorned with autumn decorations.

As they passed a candy stall, Licia playfully tugged on Ren’s coat sleeve.

“What’s wrong?”

Licia playfully said, “If you don’t give me sweets, I might play a trick.”

Her noble demeanor mixed with a girlish charm, she playfully made her request.

“Trick or Treat: Fiona’s Case”

After school, Fiona relayed a message from Ulysses to Ren.

As they talked in the hallway, students around them were discussing the upcoming harvest festival and the decorated shops.

“It seems lively this year, Ren-kun.”

“Even Erendil has more decorated shops now.”

“Right! It looks fun!”

Suddenly, Fiona, with a mischievous smile, said, “Ren-kun.”

He stopped and turned to her as she playfully warned, “If you don’t give me sweets, I might play a trick.”

A bit embarrassed but also showing her maturity, Fiona made her playful threat.

Ren, caught off-guard, apologized for not having any sweets.

“How about we go to the cafeteria and buy some sweets?”

Fiona, her face reddened, exclaimed, “No tricks then!”

Her voice was earnest and adorable.
