Chapter 323: Experts in Action
The battle against the Goblin army, which had been going badly, began to turn in the humans’ favor after Tauro and the other adventurers from the Royal Capital joined the fight.
At the center of the advance was the B-rank team Silver Goblin Hunters, supported by one C-rank team and several D-rank teams, including Black-Gold Wings.
However, Viscount Danton’s territorial troops and the adventurers from the local branch were unable to follow their momentum.
They were exhausted after days of confronting the Goblin army and suffering a major defeat.
“Our allies are more worn out than I expected. They can barely move.”
Tauro was positioned at the rear of the force following Silver Goblin Hunters, so he could calmly observe the defenders lagging behind.
“It’s impressive that they held out for several days against this many enemies,” Ankh replied.
Stationed on Aeris’s right, Ankh intercepted the Goblins attacking from the flank. He swung his modified greatsword and released a wind-infused flying slash that cut down several at once.
“Once the Goblin General is defeated, the rest will be nothing but small fry. We’ll be fine!”
Ragune, positioned on the left, swept Goblins aside with her earth-infused magic spear. Stone spears then erupted from the ground and struck the surrounding enemies.
“Then I’ll send some magic into the cluster of Hobgoblins near where the Goblin General is likely to be.”
Aeris raised her ebony staff and chanted a lightning spell. An enormous bolt crashed into the targeted section of the Goblin formation.
“Everyone is taking this very seriously.”
Tauro smiled wryly and decided to use a technique he had developed during the past several months.
He drew the Bow of Artemis without nocking a physical arrow, and a [Light Arrow] formed along the bowstring.
Tauro fired it high above the Goblin army. The arrow burst in the air and divided into countless smaller arrows of light that rained down over the creatures below.
Black-Gold Wings’ overwhelming support from the rear astonished both allies and enemies.
The other Royal Capital teams, apart from Silver Goblin Hunters at the head of the advance, were also inspired by that momentum and fought bravely.
If only matters had continued that smoothly.
“Haah… There it is! This is where Silver Goblin Hunters shows what it can do!”
Hulk had been breathing heavily after leading the charge, but once he caught his breath, he and his companions rushed toward the Goblin General.
Until that battle was decided, Tauro and the others guarded their surroundings, preventing Hobgoblins and Goblins from interfering and wiping out any groups that approached.
Silver Goblin Hunters had expended too much strength during its rapid advance and soon found itself locked in a difficult fight with the Goblin General. Nevertheless, Black-Gold Wings’ support kept other monsters away, and the B-rank team finally defeated its target.
“Haah… All right! We defeated the Goblin General!”
Hulk raised the severed head and declared victory.
Yet the Goblins showed no sign of fleeing.
Why were they not terrified by the loss of their commander?
“What’s happening?”
“The Goblins aren’t retreating!”
“Our mage is nearly out of magical power!”
Voices of alarm rose among the Royal Capital adventurers.
Tauro hurriedly sharpened [Presence Detection] and focused it on the rear of the Goblin army.
The sheer number of presences made the skill difficult to use, but among them he sensed one that was distinctly stronger than the rest.
“There’s something behind them!”
At Tauro’s warning, Aeris and the others turned toward the rear of the enemy formation. The exhausted members of Silver Goblin Hunters and the other Royal Capital teams did the same.
Perhaps realizing that it had been discovered, an enormous Goblin pushed through the mass of Hobgoblins and stepped into view. It stood a full head taller than even those higher species.
“A Goblin King…!”
Hulk spoke the name between ragged breaths. A Goblin King was a subjugation target in the B-rank band.
“A Goblin King? But Silver Goblin Hunters is a B-rank team, so we’ll be all right, won’t we?” one adventurer said hopefully.
“You fool…! We’re already at our limit. We used everything we had against the Goblin General! Besides, we only recently reached B rank. We’ve never fought a Goblin King before!”
Hulk’s face went pale as despair entered his voice.
“Aeris, Ankh, Ragune! We’re taking the front!”
Tauro’s forceful command cut through the fear created by Hulk’s words, and he stepped forward.
The surrounding adventurers had frozen in shock, but when the lower-ranked Black-Gold Wings moved to confront the Goblin King, they regained their senses and faced the remaining Goblins.
Tauro immediately fired another arrow of light at the king.
It tore straight toward its target, pierced through a Hobgoblin standing in the way, and buried itself in the Goblin King’s left shoulder.
“Guaaaaaaaaaah!”
The Goblin King roared, whether from pain, fury at Tauro’s attack, or as an order to its army.
Every Goblin that had paused surged toward Tauro and the Royal Capital force at once.
The Goblin King had apparently decided that victory would be assured if it destroyed Tauro and the other reinforcements from the Royal Capital.
