Chapter 315: More Adventurers

After completing their usual dungeon-support request, Black-Gold Wings returned to Drago and Ragune’s house.

Tauro sent Aeris and Ankh back to Marquis Van Dyne’s residence, while Ragune retired to her room. Alone in another bedroom, he sat on the bed and finally considered the day’s discussion.

“What am I going to do in the future?”

Pella released its belt mimicry and climbed onto his shoulder.

“Are you worried about me? Thank you.”

The Slime Emperor pressed affectionately against his cheek. Tauro stroked it, grateful for the silent comfort.

“My own time will come as well now that I’ve been adopted into House Graunewald. I’ve barely considered it because I still have almost three years before adulthood.”

Speaking aloud to Pella helped him organize his thoughts.

“Aeris has taken her responsibilities seriously. Being the daughter of a marquis isn’t easy, and becoming the adopted son of a count means that I must eventually make similar choices.”

He looked toward the darkened ceiling.

“My first responsibility is still helping the dragonfolk conquer the dungeon. That task will end someday, however. Before then, I need to decide what kind of life I want afterward.”

Having made that promise to himself and Pella, Tauro gradually fell asleep.

In the following days, the team continued adventuring without repeatedly discussing Aeris’s departure.

Black-Gold Wings’ activities attracted growing attention throughout the dragonfolk village. The number of suitable guild requests increased, and Salaan’s determined work as a solo adventurer inspired other dragonfolk to consider registering.

Some initially found the Adventurers’ Guild’s system inefficient. Once they understood that ordinary assistance could be accepted as formal paid work, however, many reached the same conclusion.

“An adventurer is a professional handyman.”

Most ranked requests appeared easy to the naturally powerful dragonfolk. People who had previously received food or gifts for removing monsters from a neighbor’s field realized that guild registration would allow them to earn a defined reward for the same work.

For the first time since the branch opened, its reception area became crowded.

“The number of dragonfolk adventurers is truly increasing,” Tauro said, moved by the sight.

When he first arrived, the branch had possessed neither other adventurers nor available requests.

“That makes us the senior adventurers,” Aeris declared. “We must set a proper example.”

“The people registering here probably possess combat ability equivalent to B through S rank,” Ankh reminded her. “I wouldn’t become too proud merely because their official guild ranks begin lower than ours.”

“They’re still new registrants, so most will begin between G and E rank. We’re D rank. That makes us the most senior adventurers in this branch.”

“Exactly,” Ragune agreed. “As the first dragonfolk adventurer to rise this far, I must demonstrate appropriate dignity.”

“The Adventurers’ Guild ultimately judges ability,” Tauro warned. “They’ll overtake you very quickly.”

Aeris and Ragune ignored him and began advising the far stronger newcomers.

Several hours later, Black-Gold Wings accompanied a group of newly registered dragonfolk into a forest outside the village. Their assignment was an Orc Meat Recovery Request.

A tremendous explosion shook the trees.

One of the new adventurers had annihilated the entire group of orcs that Black-Gold Wings was supposed to subjugate and harvest.

“Are ordinary dragonfolk really this powerful?” Aeris whispered.

Ragune and the three temporary dragonfolk members had learned to moderate their strength while operating among humans. The village’s newest adventurers hadn’t.

“It’s been a long time since I watched my seniors fight without restraint,” Ragune admitted, staring at the ruined clearing. “I may have become far too accustomed to human standards.”

“What’s wrong, Senior Aeris?” the responsible newcomer asked. “Ah—I understand. If I destroy them completely, we can’t recover the meat or submit proof of subjugation. I’ll practice controlling my strength.”

The extraordinarily powerful beginner obediently accepted Aeris’s earlier instructions.

Aeris, meanwhile, realized from the bottom of her heart that she was in no position to act as this person’s combat instructor.
