Chapter 300: The Day Before the Final Procedure
After Salaan, daughter of Dragonfolk Village branch manager Salaman, submitted her transportation request, the Adventurers’ Guild board gradually began receiving requests from clients other than the guild itself and Chief Ryuga.
Admittedly, nearly all of them concerned transportation into or out of the dungeon.
[Spatial Transfer] was the ability the dragonfolk village valued most highly in Tauro. He could hardly complain, especially when it allowed him to complete several paid requests in a single day.
One evening, after making his usual report at the guild, Tauro returned home and found Ragune waiting for him.
“I’ve been waiting, Tauro. It’s been a while!”
Ragune was as energetic as ever, which reassured Tauro that Black-Gold Wings was doing well.
“What brings you here, Ragune?”
Tauro could already guess, but asked anyway.
“The adoption paperwork is almost complete. A government official wants to interview you and Count Graunewald one last time to confirm that neither of you has changed your mind. Once the final confirmation is signed, the adoption will be complete.”
“So the time has finally come. When’s the interview?”
“The morning after tomorrow. Will that work?”
“The day after tomorrow… I should speak with Salaman.”
“Salaman? Oh, Salaan’s father. Have you become acquainted with him?”
Ragune clearly knew the family.
“Yes. I’m scheduled to collect Salaan’s party from Floor 110 that day. We may need to change the pickup time, so I should discuss it with him.”
“Salaan’s party has already reached Floor 110? As expected of her!”
“You know Salaan?”
“Of course. My siblings and I often played with her when we were children. We used to hold time trials through the dungeon’s upper floors until the adults discovered us and became furious… Ah, kill me.”
Apparently, remembering the punishments had triggered Ragune’s familiar catchphrase.
“Those were life-threatening dungeon races, not children’s games.”
For once, Tauro couldn’t stop himself from pointing out the obvious.
“They’re popular among dragonfolk children. Human children don’t play them?”
Ragune looked genuinely astonished.
“If human children did that, most of us wouldn’t survive childhood. We didn’t even have a nearby dungeon. We played in the forest instead.”
Tauro smiled wryly at the difference between human and dragonfolk standards.
After they talked a little longer, Ragune returned to the Royal Capital through [Dimensional Corridor].
The next day—
“I understand. Then transport me to the Floor 110 rest room today. I’ll stay there overnight, meet Salaan’s party when they return tomorrow, and explain that your pickup may be delayed. I’ll also carry several extra days of rations, just in case.”
Salaman readily accepted Tauro’s explanation in the branch manager’s office.
“I’m sorry for changing the arrangement so suddenly. I’ll return as quickly as possible, but it may be the following day.”
“Ha ha ha! Dragonfolk expedition schedules regularly slip by several days—and sometimes an entire month. Salaan is punctual, so her party will probably return to Floor 110 by the end of tomorrow, but nothing is certain inside a dungeon. I’ll wait there and make sure they’re safe.”
“Thank you. That helps greatly.”
Tauro assisted with Salaman’s preparations, and the two of them headed for the dungeon with the escort team.
When they reached the Floor 110 rest room, they found a note attached beside the entrance.
‘Salaan’s party reached Floor 110 on the sixth day.’
“They arrived at an impressive pace. Ha ha ha!”
The note reassured Salaman that his daughter’s party was progressing safely.
“Accounting for the return journey, they should be able to reach Floor 115 or 116,” Tauro estimated.
“Probably. They may go even deeper, since they can return by the shortest route. My daughter plans these things carefully.”
Salaman’s eyes narrowed with pride at Salaan’s growth.
Smiling at the doting father, Tauro said, “Then I’ll return for everyone tomorrow, or the day after at the latest.”
“Understood. I’ll leave it to you.”
After confirming the arrangement, Tauro returned to the surface to attend the adoption interview the following morning.
