Chapter 104: The Centre of Attention

The preparations were complete. Only the guests remained to arrive.

I almost forgot to arrange the display of magic tools and potions. While servants brought the items outside, Rosalia appeared with Mira.

“Big brother, what do you think of my dress?”

She wore a pale-yellow dress decorated with ribbons. Matching ribbons held up her hair. Without heavy jewellery, the outfit emphasised her natural, delicate charm.

“It suits you perfectly. You look like a princess.”

“Kyu!”

Rosalia smiled with practised grace. Mira also demanded attention. Someone had tied a ribbon around their neck.

“Mira looks adorable too. The ribbon suits you.”

I stroked their head, and they pressed happily against my hand.

Holy dragons had no male or female distinction. Nevertheless, Mira clearly enjoyed pretty decorations. That was a preference, not a reason to assign them a gender.

I arranged the exhibits while Rosalia watched. She offered to help, but I refused because metal parts and potion bottles could soil her formal dress. She muttered that choosing it had been a mistake; she had wanted to demonstrate the devices herself.

Mira stared at the Sprinkler with dangerous enthusiasm. I carried them away before they could activate it and soak everyone.

“Big brother, I don’t recognise these,” Rosalia said, pointing to the toner and cream.

“They’re facial toner and hand cream. I made them to interest Fabienne, Nathalie, and Melissa in potion-related work.”

“Hand cream?”

“It makes dry hands smooth and healthy.”

Rosalia fixed the products with an intense stare.

“Big brother…”

“It’s too early for you. Your skin is already healthy.”

“I’m not a child anymore.”

That was precisely the sort of declaration children made. I wisely avoided arguing further.

“Lord Julius, Lord Edward has arrived.”

“I’ll greet him. Rosalia, remain here with Mira and behave properly.”

I patted them both and went to the entrance.

Edward stepped from his carriage as I approached.

“Welcome, Edward.”

“Thank you for inviting me.”

We exchanged formal greetings before relaxing into the easier manner of friends.

“I’m glad we could meet before winter fully arrives,” I said. “There’s someone I want everyone to meet.”

“A new magic tool?”

“Not exactly. I also need to tell you that my grandparents were poisoned in the royal capital. They died before I arrived.”

Edward’s expression fell.

“I’m sorry, Julius.”

His sincere grief strengthened my confidence in our friendship.

When we entered the garden, he stopped abruptly and stared towards Rosalia and Mira.

“Lord Julius… what’s that?”

“This is Mira, a holy dragon and a new member of our household. Today’s tea party is primarily their introduction. Mira, greet Edward.”

“Kyu!”

Mira raised one forepaw in a remarkably casual salute. Edward struggled not to laugh.

“They understand us?”

“Yes.”

“May I touch them?”

Before I could answer, Mira extended their head towards him. Edward slowly stroked their fur, and his face transformed into helpless delight.

That reaction repeated with every arriving guest. Mira looked more like a living stuffed toy than a legendary creature, and no one displayed fear.

They became the centre of the gathering almost immediately. The host was largely forgotten.

I accepted my defeat and presented the exhibits.

Edward examined the Sprinkler first.

“This would save our gardeners considerable labour. Do you intend to sell it?”

“Possibly, once the design is passed to the Magic Tool Guild.”

“I would rather build one myself.”

Billy and Platon agreed enthusiastically. I had no intention of monopolising the design, so I promised them copies of the blueprints. Processing some parts without Craft would be difficult, but attempting the work might help them awaken or develop their own aptitudes.

Rosalia joined their discussion and proudly explained the design decisions. Watching the four children debate nozzle pressure and strap placement convinced me that this gathering had already succeeded.

“Lord Julius, may we try the toner and hand cream?” Fabienne asked.

“Certainly.”

The girls had taken the bait exactly as hoped.

I called over a servant who had used the cream.

“My hands were dry and cracked until yesterday,” the servant explained, showing them. “One application restored them overnight.”

Fabienne, Nathalie, and Melissa immediately tested small amounts on their hands. Their skin was already healthy, yet the improvement was visible.

“May we also test the facial toner?” Fabienne asked, her eyes gleaming with determination.

“Of course—but test it on a small area first.”

Her enthusiasm was slightly intimidating, but it was exactly the interest I had hoped to inspire.
