Chapter 84: Additional Orders
We left for the royal castle as soon as lunch ended.
I had finished three holy dragon stuffed toys. All that remained was to deliver them. If Caro wasn’t at the castle, I could entrust hers to Chloe—although I wasn’t entirely certain Chloe would resist keeping two.
When House Heine’s carriage arrived, Father was waiting. A servant must have warned him that we were approaching.
“Forgive my delay.”
“You aren’t late. I apologise for summoning you so suddenly.” His gaze fell on the toys in my arms. “Are those already finished?”
Father looked lost for words.
I wasn’t a professional stuffed-toy maker, and I had no intention of becoming one.
“After delivering these, I intend to leave for the territorial capital tomorrow.”
“I see. It feels rather soon, but leaving before rumours spread may be wise. Few people would chase a rumour all the way to the Heine Margraviate—apart from a certain holy-dragon scholar.”
“Quite.”
I remembered Mars’s boyish excitement and couldn’t help smiling. The discovery had fulfilled the dream of his life.
“Margrave Heine! Lord Julius!” Mars hurried towards us, then stared. “There are more holy dragons!”
“They’re stuffed toys, Master Mars.”
“Stuffed toys? Then where’s the real holy dragon?”
“Mira remained at the townhouse. Bringing them here openly would attract too much attention.”
His shoulders sagged as though the world had ended. He would be able to observe Mira whenever he wished after reaching the Heine Margraviate; there was no need for despair.
“Father, why was I summoned?”
“It concerns the hot-and-cold air blower I delivered. His Majesty was deliberately vague, but it appears the device caused a dispute.”
“A dispute?”
“Everyone wants one. The royal household has requested additional units.”
Was that all? Father could have accepted an order without me. Perhaps they wanted the devices immediately.
As long as the materials were available, I could make several quickly.
“First, Her Majesty wishes to speak with you,” Father said.
“I understand. My stomach has begun to hurt.”
“Mine already does.”
“I’m sorry.”
He led me to a salon where tea had been prepared. Her Majesty, Princess Chloe, and Princess Daniela were waiting.
This was bad. I had prepared gifts for Her Majesty, Chloe, and Caro—not Daniela.
“Julius Heine has arrived, Your Majesty.”
“You need not be so formal, Julius. What are those wonderfully made holy dragon toys?”
“They’re gifts for…”
“How lovely!”
Her Majesty clapped happily. Chloe and Daniela stared with equal longing.
There was no escape. I gave the three toys to those present and mentally added another to my workload for Caro.
The strategy succeeded spectacularly; all three were delighted.
“Where’s Mira?” Chloe asked while stroking her toy.
“At the townhouse with Rosalia.”
“What a pity. I wanted to see them again,” Daniela said.
She hadn’t been present for the hatching, so perhaps the toy would compensate somewhat.
“Father said you wished to discuss the hot-and-cold air blower.”
“Yes. You made the one delivered yesterday, did you not?” Her Majesty asked. “Could you produce several more?”
“Certainly. With the proper materials, I can make them immediately.”
All three widened their eyes.
“You truly can do almost anything,” Chloe said.
“Not quite.”
Her direct praise embarrassed me.
“There’s a Royal Magic Tool Research Institute within the castle,” Her Majesty continued. “Would you make the devices there? From these gifts, I assume you intend to return to the Heine Margraviate soon.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“You’re leaving already?” Chloe cried.
Her Majesty immediately corrected her outburst. Chloe still had a great deal of princess training ahead of her. I would cheer her on from the safety of the territorial capital.
Soon I stood inside the Royal Magic Tool Research Institute. Several researchers had been working busily, but every hand stopped when we entered.
“Use any tools and materials you require,” Her Majesty said. “Tell me immediately if something is missing.”
The Queen had personally accompanied me. Everyone in the room was surely experiencing the same stomach pain I was.
“May I watch beside you?” Chloe asked.
“Of course, Your Highness.”
She pouted at my formal answer, but Her Majesty was present. As expected, Chloe received a light reprimand for trying to make me speak too casually in public.
Her Majesty required two additional units. I also decided to teach the institute’s magic-tool craftsmen how to construct them. That would allow the royal household to handle future orders and repairs without summoning me.
The moment I proposed this, every researcher crowded closer. Their hunger for knowledge was admirable.
“We begin with this magic circle. Next, we prepare the casing like this.”
Because time was limited, I kept the design simple. After making so many identical devices, the process had become almost effortless.
The researchers divided naturally into those taking detailed notes and those studying every movement of my hands.
“You assemble it remarkably quickly,” one said.
“Once the design is complete, reproducing it’s mostly repetition. You’ll soon become accustomed to the process.”
I completed the magic circle and installed it in the mechanism. There was no time for elaborate decoration, so I allowed the natural grain of the wood to serve as the exterior design.
The first unit was finished quickly. For the second, I had the researchers perform the work themselves while I answered questions.
As expected of professionals from the Royal Magic Tool Research Institute, they learned rapidly. Their enthusiastic praise of the design was rather embarrassing.

Victory! Maybe?
