Chapter 279: Getting Lectured
Tauro passed his first night inside the dungeon and greeted the morning without incident, thanks to the magic-stone wards that the support teams attached to the conquest force had placed along the route.
“A magic tool that can create a ward… I wonder whether I could make one too.”
Tauro considered how useful such a device would be.
“Tauro-dono, we should depart. The conquest team appears to be moving around this floor more than expected. My people report that the support teams have left wards and other markers everywhere to secure the route.”
Tsugumu, captain of the escort team, urged Tauro onward.
The conquest team seemed to be having more trouble with the 202nd floor than anticipated.
The floor was so vast that finding the staircase to the next level was no simple task.
“Understood. Let’s catch up with them as quickly as possible and deliver the supplies.”
Tauro nodded, and the group resumed its journey.
After they had walked for some time, the artificial sun stood high overhead, making it seem close to noon.
At that moment, Tauro’s [True Eye] detected several figures in a nearby section of forest.
It was a group using powerful concealment-type abilities.
Through [True Eye], their outlines seemed to glow, revealing the presence of the abilities concealing them.
The other group appeared to have noticed Tauro’s party as well and began moving toward them through the trees.
“Are you the supply team? Thank you! What happened to— Wait. Why is Tauro-dono here?”
The woman leading the group began with words of gratitude, but her expression changed the instant she noticed Tauro.
“Well, actually…”
Tsugumu explained the situation to the support-team leader.
“Delivering supplies is certainly important, but we’re not amateurs. We ration our provisions so that delays won’t immediately put us in danger, and another supply team can cover an emergency. How could you bring Tauro-dono into such a dangerous area? And Tauro-dono, you were thoughtless as well. We’re grateful for your cooperation precisely because you hold our lifeline in your hands. That’s why we can’t permit you to risk yourself like this. All of you, line up. To begin with…”
The female support-team leader made Tauro, Tsugumu, and every member of the escort team stand in a row while she lectured them.
“We’ll escort you to the conquest team. Is that understood?”
After the long lecture, she declared that her support team would accompany them.
“But do you not have other important duties?”
Tauro asked, reluctant to interfere with their work.
“Our duties include securing the route between the staircase and the conquest team, investigating the monsters and ecology of this floor, and mapping the dungeon. Ordinarily, we would collect the supplies ourselves. However, this team has only limited [Magic Storage] capacity, and protecting Tauro-dono now takes priority. We’re accompanying you. Understood?”
The pressure in her voice made refusal seem impossible.
“Yes…”
Tauro and Tsugumu could only agree.
The support team took the lead and guided Tauro’s group along a shorter route toward the conquest team.
Even by that shortcut, they still walked for several hours.
“The conquest team and its attached support team appear to be fighting a monster. We’ll approach, but you’re to remain back until the battle ends. We’ll reinforce them.”
The support-team leader pointed toward a distant cloud of dust.
Learning [God’s Hand] had extended the distance at which Tauro could use [True Eye], but even he could see very little from so far away.
“Understood. We’ll guard Tauro-dono and watch the surroundings.”
Tsugumu nodded and positioned the escort team around Tauro.
After confirming their formation, the female leader and her companions raced toward the battlefield.
Tauro’s group advanced only until [True Eye] could make out what was happening within the rising dust.
Even then, the figures looked no larger than grains of sesame.
One enormous monster and roughly fifteen lesser monsters were fighting the conquest team on nearly equal terms.
Bright explosions repeatedly threw up smoke from the monsters’ side, while the conquest team answered with narrow rays of light that vanished almost as soon as they flashed.
Even so, Tauro believed that the conquest team—whose members possessed abilities comparable to S-rank adventurers—would finish the battle before long.
“…It appears to be over. They’re signaling for us to approach.”
Tsugumu noticed first and reported to Tauro.
“All right. The conquest team won’t lecture us too, will they?”
Tauro joked as they hurried toward the others.
