Chapter 269: Continued: In the Siblings’ Residence Garden

After briefly introducing Pella to Ragune in Drago’s garden, Tauro decided to give her the equipment he had prepared the previous day. Just as when he had presented her with the magic spear, he casually took the items from [Magic Storage].

“Th-this is…!”

Ragune stared in astonishment at the rectangular shield intended for her.

“A clerk who said he was related to you recommended this shield. Is it the kind you wanted? I modified it to improve its performance, so it should pair well with your magic spear.”

Smiling, Tauro explained every effect he had added for her.

“What? You fitted a Magic Rock Turtle magic stone into a Mirror Turtle Rectangular Shield? Tauro, wait a moment. This shield is already expensive, and you added a Magic Rock Turtle stone to it? Have you lost your mind? Do you have any idea what that stone is worth?”

Ragune stared at him, wondering whether he truly understood its value.

So the dragonfolk did know exactly how valuable that magic stone was.

Tauro tried to laugh it off, but Ragune remained visibly troubled.

“I’m sorry. My absence has placed a heavy burden on all three of you. Think of these gifts as an apology—and as substitutes for me while I’m away.”

Tauro delivered the words he had prepared the night before.

He had expected that she might otherwise refuse the gift.

“Damn it… When you put it that way, I can hardly refuse. But consult me properly next time, Tauro. The shield alone costs five gold coins, and then there’s the Magic Rock Turtle stone. A magic shield like this is the sort of equipment normally possessed only by a top-class dungeon conquest force. It isn’t something one accepts casually. This is also the shield my brother has always wanted most…”

When Ragune glanced toward Drago, his expression made it obvious how badly he wanted one.

The shields sold by Dragon Knight Armory were evidently very popular.

Tauro silently resolved to make Drago a similar shield someday as thanks for allowing him to stay there.

“…I’m sorry for springing this on you. Please accept it anyway. It’s the least I can do right now. Use it to protect everyone.”

 Tauro bowed his head.

“All right. While you’re away, I’ll be the shield that protects Aeris and Ankh.”

Ragune nodded and, now openly delighted, picked up the rectangular shield to examine it.

“As I mentioned, your magic spear carries the earth attribute. Equipping this shield will strengthen that attribute and increase the spear’s attack power.”

Tauro explained how to activate it.

When Ragune channeled magical power into the shield, a semitransparent protective wall spread outward from it.

“Oh!”

Ragune marveled like a child. She then readied her magic spear and struck a boulder in the garden.

 The boulder shattered.

“Oh!”

Once again, Ragune cried out with the delight of a child receiving a new toy.

“Ragune, you may enjoy yourself, but please stop destroying my garden.”

Drago warned his younger sister, although he still looked rather envious.

“Ragune, I also want you to deliver these to Aeris and Ankh.”

Tauro handed her Aeris’s modified Giant Hell Spider Priest’s Robes and Ankh’s modified Plate Cuirass Made from Wandering Ghost Armor.

“What? You’re entrusting that responsibility to me? Do you really think I can persuade them to accept such things? Even I know how unreliable that sounds… Damn it… Kill me…”

Ragune didn’t know whether the other two would accept their gifts as readily as she had, and her familiar phrase slipped out.

“Ha ha. Then simply repeat exactly what I tell you.”

Tauro laughed at her troubled expression.

“Oh… Is that all? Then what should I say?”

Ragune visibly relaxed now that she only had to deliver messages.

“Tell Aeris, ‘I’m sorry this is all I can do right now. Please think of these robes as a substitute for me.’”

“All right. What about Ankh?”

“Tell Ankh, ‘Consider it payment for protecting our lives.’”

“Payment for protecting your lives?”

Ragune repeated the words, not quite understanding their significance.

“Yes. Just tell him that. He’ll understand.”

“Understood. Is there anything else?”

Ragune confirmed the rest of Tauro’s message.

“Tell everyone not to do anything reckless. Put your lives first—and take care of the place I intend to return to.”

“Of course! I’ll tell them both. Brother, please continue looking after Tauro while he’s here.”

After replying, Ragune returned to Dansas through [Dimensional Corridor].

“Pella, you haven’t met Aeris and Ankh yet, but I’ll introduce you properly another time.”

At Tauro’s words, Pella bounced excitedly and transformed back into a belt.
