Chapter 268: In the Siblings’ Residence Garden

The day after Tauro finished shopping and modifying the equipment,

he was in the garden of Drago’s house—his temporary residence—making a special Reversi board for the first time in quite a while.

“What beautiful craftsmanship! Incidentally, what’s this used for?”

Intrigued by Tauro’s work, Drago asked him about it.

Tauro gladly explained Reversi and invited Drago to play a game.

“Oh, I see! If I take this square, I can flip all of these pieces!”

Drago learned quickly and was soon completely absorbed in the game.

Tauro gave the special board to the delighted Drago. Around noon, Ragune made a rare visit to the house through [Dimensional Corridor].

“Thank goodness you’re home, Tauro! I have a few things to report.”

Relieved to find him there, Ragune emerged from her room and joined them in the garden.

“What happened, Ragune? I heard the general situation from the message you sent through your brother.”

Tauro wondered what else had occurred and listened to her report.

“At the moment, Black-Gold Wings is mainly taking free quests that support higher-ranked adventurers…”

“That makes sense. Once a team enters the D-rank band, it starts receiving more advanced quests, so this is the time to support experienced adventurers and learn from them.”

“Right. We’ve been assigned to support a B-rank expedition, so we’ll be leaving Dansas for a while.”

“How long will you be gone?”

Tauro still did not understand what Ragune was leading up to.

“The quest itself should take only about a week. Afterward, however, we’ve decided—at Leader Aeris’s request—to establish a temporary base in the Royal Capital.”

Ragune sounded as though there were more she was reluctant to say.

“The Royal Capital? I’m still stuck here and may remain here for quite some time. Is it safe for you to go there while the Assassins’ Guild is involved?”

“Th-that part will be fine! Chief Ryuga sent three of our people to Dansas for your sake, remember?”

“The three dragonfolk operatives?”

“Yes. They’ve secretly been hunting suspicious people believed to be Assassins’ Guild spies. Unfortunately, villagers saw them disposing of some of those people, which has made it difficult for them to gather any more information locally. We decided to have the three register as adventurers and work with us. Then all six of us will travel to the Royal Capital and investigate the Assassins’ Guild there.”

“That’s a sudden development. Did Aeris propose investigating the Assassins’ Guild?”

Tauro had left the matter to Count Dareder and the dragonfolk. If Aeris and the others intended to involve themselves directly, however, that changed things.

He had left the team precisely to keep his companions out of danger.

If Aeris and the others began probing the Assassins’ Guild, the situation could become even more dangerous.

“No… Gathering information on the Assassins’ Guild is the responsibility of our three compatriots. We’re only supporting them because they aren’t accustomed to operating in the Royal Capital. They’ll need Aeris and Ankh’s help. Aeris didn’t initiate this; we all discussed it and reached the decision together.”

 Ragune was a poor liar.

Aeris and Ankh were probably not much better, and they had apparently entrusted Ragune with the message. It was obvious that they were concealing something.

“…I feel as though you’re leaving quite a lot unsaid. Still, I won’t oppose a decision all of you made together. Just be extremely careful.”

“We will! But are you all right, Tauro? It must be lonely without us.”

Speaking on behalf of the others, Ragune looked genuinely worried.

“I’m fine. Actually, I’ve made a new friend. I hoped to introduce Pella to everyone, but under the circumstances, I’ll introduce it only to you for now. Pella, release your mimicry.”

Tauro patted the belt around his waist.

The disguised slime quivered, dropped its mimicry, and appeared before Ragune and Drago.

“A Mimic Slime!?” the siblings exclaimed in unison.

As expected of dragonfolk, the siblings knew a great deal about slimes.

“Pella can use mimicry, but it’s actually a Slime Emperor variant. I acquired [Slime User] and formed a familiar contract with it.”

“You tamed a Slime Emperor subspecies!?” they cried together.

 They truly were siblings.

Every word came out in perfect unison.

“Yes. Apparently, it’s extremely rare. But Pella is my partner now, so I’ll be fine. It has exceptional resistance to both magic and physical attacks.”

Pleased by Tauro’s praise, Pella bounced up and down energetically.

“You tamed the pinnacle of slimes—and a subspecies at that… There are too many surprises for us to process… Kill me…” they said in perfect harmony.

Once again, Drago and his younger sister Ragune uttered their familiar phrase in perfect harmony.
