Chapter 261: The Boy Adventurer Gets Scolded
After returning from the dungeon, Tauro first visited the Adventurers’ Guild and reported that he had acquired a slime familiar.
Ryuko registered the familiar for him.
“It’s extremely rare for anyone to register a slime,” she explained. “Most ordinary slimes are treated as disposable familiars.”
An ordinary slime could barely move on its own, forcing its tamer to carry it everywhere. For most people, maintaining the contract wasn’t worth the trouble, so they simply released the slime instead of registering it with the guild.
“Where’s your slime?” Ryuko asked. “It’s alive, so it can’t be inside [Magic Storage], and that pouch at your waist is too small.”
She looked around Tauro in confusion.
“Pella, release your mimicry.”
The surface of Tauro’s leather armor rippled. Pella separated from it and appeared before Ryuko as if performing a magic trick.
“What!? Is that a Mimic Slime? One was reportedly discovered in the dungeon’s deeper floors long ago!”
Startled, Ryuko immediately used [Monster Appraisal].
“It’s a Mimic Slime with appraisal obstruction? No, this must be a new species! Tauro-kun, where did you find such an extraordinary slime, and how did you tame it? Wait—did you already possess a monster-taming ability?”
As the sole receptionist at the Dragonfolk Village branch, Ryuko had been given limited information about Tauro’s abilities through his guild tag and identity verification. None of the recorded abilities involved taming monsters.
“I acquired the ability in the dungeon. Afterward, I encountered Pella on a deeper floor and tried taming it.”
Tauro laughed awkwardly and stroked Pella, which had transformed into a belt around his waist.
“A deeper floor? Mimic Slimes were reportedly discovered beyond the 150th floor. Don’t tell me you went that far! Tauro-kun, that was far too dangerous. The warriors who accompanied you today were only an escort unit, not members of the conquest or support forces. They could’ve been wiped out on the 150th floor. Still… I’m very glad you returned safely.”
Ryuko’s anger gave way briefly to relief.
“I’m sorry. I misjudged the transfer and accidentally went much deeper than intended.”
Tauro had actually reached the 201st floor, but after seeing how angry Ryuko became merely at the thought of the 150th, he wisely omitted that detail.
“Even so, taming a Mimic Slime is almost unheard of. You must be extraordinarily lucky. Your monster-taming ability must be highly advanced; otherwise, your chance of success would’ve been almost nonexistent.”
“From what I was told, it’s only [Slime User], the most basic slime-taming ability.”
“What!?” Ryuko shouted. “A [Slime User] may have a ninety-nine-percent success rate against an ordinary slime, but taming a Mimic Slime should be almost impossible. Do you understand how lucky you were?”
Her voice echoed through the empty guild hall. Fortunately, no one else was present to hear it.
“It seems I was very lucky. Ha ha…”
Tauro laughed uneasily. He could hardly admit that Pella wasn’t actually a Mimic Slime, but a Slime Emperor variant whose taming probability was probably even lower.
“Tauro-kun, you’re much too reckless. A dungeon’s difficulty can increase drastically from one floor to the next. Only the conquest force and its support units travel beyond the 150th floor. With an ordinary escort unit, you mustn’t leave the rest room carelessly. I’ll report this to the chief, and you’ll be more careful from now on.”
After enduring Ryuko’s stern lecture, Tauro apologized and returned to Drago’s house, where he spent the rest of the day resting.
