Chapter 260: A Subspecies Familiar
After taming Pella, Tauro and the dragonfolk warriors used [Spatial Transfer] to return from the transfer room on the 201st floor to the transfer room on the first basement floor. They were now making their way back to the village.
Strangely, Pella had been able to enter the transfer room, also known as the rest room, without being repelled.
According to the leader, the familiar contract caused some of Tauro’s magical power to flow into Pella. The barrier therefore recognized it as a familiar rather than an ordinary monster.
The dragonfolk had already conducted several experiments involving familiars, and there were many confirmed examples of the same phenomenon.
If a familiar contract was terminated inside a transfer room, however, the monster would be destroyed by the barrier.
When the leader explained that detail, Pella bounced up and down in protest, apparently offended by the suggestion.
“It’s all right, Pella. Don’t worry. I’d never do that.”
Tauro had already grown fond of the intelligent Slime Emperor variant.
“Slime Emperors are said to be intelligent, but this subspecies may be as clever as a person. It clearly understands our conversation. Pella, you must protect your master, Tauro-dono. That’s your most important duty.”
Pella, which was resting on Tauro’s shoulder, rippled in response.
“I knew it understood. This is extraordinary. The conquest force has never reported a subspecies like this, so it may be a new species. The only other slime known to alter parts of its body in this way is the Mimic Slime found in the deeper floors. Researchers would be delighted to examine it. Naturally, I won’t tell them anything without your permission, Tauro-dono.”
The leader mimed sealing his lips.
“The dragonfolk have treated me kindly, so I’d like to cooperate when possible. The decision belongs to Pella, though.”
Pella trembled slightly. Through the familiar contract, Tauro sensed a clear refusal.
“It doesn’t want to be examined. Please tell no one except Chief Ryuga and the people directly involved.”
The leader and the other warriors promised to keep Pella’s existence confidential.
“Then it’d be best if it didn’t attract attention,” the leader said. “Pella, can you use mimicry? Can you change your shape and color?”
Pella quivered, spread across the surface of Tauro’s leather armor, and changed its color until it perfectly imitated the armor itself.
“Amazing! This will help protect Tauro-dono and keep Pella out of public view. Slimes are generally omnivorous and can survive on very little food, although I can’t say whether the same is true of this subspecies.”
Pella rippled across the armor. Tauro sensed that it would be fine.
“It seems food won’t be a problem, but I’ll feed it regularly anyway.”
Tauro stroked the section of armor Pella was imitating.
“Tauro-dono, that leather armor appears to have served you for a long time, and it’s becoming too small. You should purchase new equipment after we return to the village. Visitors who find their way to our settlement often say that our craftsmen sell things they’ve never seen elsewhere. Some pieces are unique items made from monsters defeated in the dungeon’s deeper floors.”
The information immediately caught Tauro’s interest as an adventurer. He had been preoccupied since arriving and hadn’t yet visited the village’s armor shops.
“That sounds exciting. This armor is getting old, so I’ll look for a replacement when we return. Are there any shops you recommend?”
The leader considered the question.
“Dragon’s Breath Armor Shop has the largest selection. Dragon Knight Armor Shop specializes in one-of-a-kind equipment. Rangas Blacksmith has a smaller inventory, but it’s a fashionable new shop run by a dwarf and has earned an excellent reputation since opening.”
“There’s a dwarven smith in the village?”
“Yes. A dwarf wandered into the village many years ago. He became fascinated by dragonfolk forging techniques and remained here to train. He recently left Dragon Knight Armor Shop and opened his own business.”
“Rangas Blacksmith… I’ll visit all three shops.”
Tauro memorized their names, and the prospect of shopping made the journey back from the dungeon feel much shorter.
