Chapter 33: One Million Transferees?

The 50th day of living in another world

Two days after the scheduled return, Rad and the others all returned before noon. We don’t know what happened, but we are relieved to know that everyone is safe.

“I’m sorry for the delay, Chief, It took us a little while to get a grasp of the situation in the city.”

“I’m glad you’re back safe and sound, and thank you for your help.”

Everyone in the village was welcoming them and rejoicing over their safe return.

“We’re just about to have lunch, so I want you to take a rest and eat. You’ll report back afterwards, but for now, just relax.”

“What about the goods we bought?”

“Do you want me to store them in the warehouse?

“Yeah, I’ll take care of that over here.”

Since there seems to be no urgent report, we ask them to take a rest for a while after lunch as well. We decided to let all the rabbits except Rad rest for the day.

After finishing packing, inventory control, and other various tasks, we went back to the office. After a good three hours had passed, the main members gathered for a village meeting.

“Once again, thank you for your hard work, Rad. I’d like to ask you about the Rabbit Village.”

“I’ll tell you about the Rabbit Village. In conclusion, they all want to move here. It is such a safe place to live. Since we were already here, they said they had no regrets about leaving the village.”

It appears that we have successfully gained their approval.

“And that, …… The village head wouldn’t dare to ask, but let me tell you one thing.”

“Oh.”

“When they took us into hiding, I told you we had nowhere else to go. I thought that if we ran to another village, the Japanese who attacked us would come back.”

“I thought that was it.”

“I relied on them to conceal it. ……”

I have heard before that the Rabbit tribe is a tribe that takes very good care of its own people. I am sure they did not want to cause trouble for the other tribes.

“Rad, there is nothing wrong with that. Loyalty speaks for itself. I have no doubts about the Rabbit Tribe.”

“Sorry ……, I really wanted to tell you now.”

“Now that Rad is clear, let’s ask them when they’ll be here.”

“That’s right. I’ll send about two people over there tomorrow. I’m sure they’ll be packing up their luggage, so I think they’ll arrive here in three days. All 10 of them.”

“Well, good work. They’ll have to follow the rules of loyalty, but hopefully we’ll be able to accommodate them all.”

If all goes well, there will now be 29 villagers, and with an even larger labor force, life in the village will be more stable than it is now.

“Next, tell me the results of the trade.”

“The highest prices were paid for potatoes and cloth. The Japanese people’s possessions were also bought at a fair price. However, the materials for the monsters were at a …… low price.”

As Rado said, the materials were sold for two or three bits of money. Only the threads of the giant spider went up in price, but the rest were close to the bottom.

“We bought salt and nails, as much as we could carry. We also bought cooking utensils, some fruit, wheat, and a few spices.”

“You bought a lot. Did you sell it at such a good price?”

“Oh, yes. Yes, we sold potatoes and other things like that, and the cloth was in very high demand.”

As for the potatoes, I heard that they sold out in no time when they cooked them and gave people a chance to try them. It seems that “competing with each other” was not a metaphor.

“Oh, and I got some waterproof sap for the bathtub. I got some good quality stuff from the dungeon for cheap.”

“Oh, there’s a dungeon?”

“Wow! It’s starting to look otherworldly!”

Hearing the word “dungeon,” Natsuki and Touya started to bite. They started asking Rad a lot of questions about this and that.

“Hey, wait a minute, you can get excited about that later, So, Rad, what is the reason for the high prices of potatoes and cloth?”

“That has something to do with the state of the city. I’d like to report on that as well, okay?”

“Yes, of course. Tell me as much detail as you can.”

“Before I tell you that, I want you to take a look at this first. I asked the Adventurers’ Guild to put it in writing. We are not very good with letters. ……”

This time, upon learning of the existence of the Adventurers’ Guild, several people responded in a loud voice. But he decided to ignore them and continued his story.

“The request cost some money, but I’ve put it together in detail. I’ve already had the contents read out loud and confirmed. I just wonder if the chief …… will be able to read it.”

When he unfolded the document that Rad had given him, he found the letters of this world written on it. The document is also visible as …… Japanese, overlapping with the characters.

“Here it is! Another world translation!”

“I see, I see. It’s strange that even if the letters overlap, there’s no sense of incongruity, it’s a different world fantasy, isn’t it!”

“… Rad it’s fine, it seems like we can read it. Everyone, please take a good look at the contents.”

Natsuki and Sakura are very excited, but it’s useless to rush in, so I leave it alone. A summary of the documents issued by the guild states the following:

At the same time on the day I was transferred, a large number of men and women claiming to be Japanese suddenly appeared. They seemed to appear here and there in the city without warning. Their ages ranged from 15 to 50, according to later reports. The male-female ratio was almost equal, and there were no children or elderly people.

About 1,000 people were in the city and were temporarily housed by the garrison and adventurers over the next few days. Over the next 20 days, a total of 2,000 were identified, including those who had gathered in the city. Those who rebelled were captured and taken to the capital, or were executed.

Currently, there are approximately 1,000 Japanese in the city. They are engaged in agriculture and industry in the city, including adventurers. The relatively docile ones were left in the city, and the rest were transported to the capital. The rest have been executed or are being treated as slaves.

The same phenomenon is occurring in other cities, and the number of people gathered in the capital, 15,000 in the end. Of these, 6,000 were allowed to live in the capital. Of the remaining 9,000, 3,000 were executed and 6,000 were enslaved and forced to work in the capital or in the cities.

The Japanese have two things in common. They all have skills and have something called occupation in their status. Just before coming to this world, they were exposed to intense light.

“A ton of people have transferred here ……. If you include the capitals and cities, you’re looking at something like 20,000 people.”

“If you include those who didn’t make it to the towns and cities, that’s ……. And this is just for the Beast Tribe territory, right?”

“The number of people who died on the way is probably much higher. How many times larger is the territory of the human race than that of the beastmen?”

“I don’t know the details, but I think it’s about five times as much.”

“Five times more… Maybe a million people are coming? This number is only on the west side of the continent.”

“The east side of the continent is almost completely wiped out, right?”

“I guess so.”

The situation on the east side of the Great Forest is unknown, but if there are people who have transitioned to …… that side, they will not be alive first. Location-wise, we were just barely in the safe category. If we had been a little further off, we would have died.

“The scale of the story is too big for me to wrap my head around.”

“I know, let’s take a break.”

I had expected it to some extent, but as expected, mass transfer of hundreds of thousands of people……. Everyone here was confused by the scale and number of people.

◇◇◇

After taking a break…

One by one, everyone came back, but none of them looked very happy. Then the conversation started again.

“I’m still puzzled because I have so many things to think about.”

“I feel like my head is going to explode!”

The other members of the group were also struggling with the same problem.

“I’m in the same boat, but first listen to your own thoughts.”

There is no point in worrying about this or that. Switching to that, I tried to pick up only the things that pertain to the village.

“The town and the city had a lot to deal with, and the dangerous ones were either executed or enslaved. –But those who are rather obedient and those who have a taste for otherworldly things are well-protected and start to live there.”

He pauses here.

“People from outside the city have been settled in the city for up to 20 days after the transfer. Well, some of them may be living in hiding. …… Also, ignore the east at this point. The human territory is also left alone as there is no information on it at this time. How do you feel so far?.”

“I think it’s a little clearer. I can understand it somewhat.”

The others nodded sparsely in return.

“If you suddenly have a lot of power, there will always be people who run amok. What will they do? We should think about what they will do and how it will affect this village.”

“I see. But is it okay to leave the other problems alone?”

“I don’t know. Maybe it’s not okay.”

“What?”

Everyone was dumbfounded with their mouths hanging open.

“But, as long as we can trade with the city, we can live within the barrier , right?”

“That’s true, but ……”

“The city will be  blockaded because of something the transferees have done. We need to stockpile salt and other necessities before that happens. Then we should be fine for a few years, right?”

“Indeed.”

“If we had that long, I think we would be able to reach the South Sea. The reality is that with our current forces, we can defend ourselves, but we can’t attack. So, let’s be fully prepared while we still can.”

“It is true that we can only do so much.”

“I don’t think everyone can come to a conclusion right away, so let’s talk about it again tomorrow, including some good ideas.”

It is not something that can be concluded immediately. We decided to carry the village meeting over to tomorrow and terminated it.
