Chapter 253: Dragonfolk Village Branch
The receptionist at the Adventurers’ Guild’s Dragonfolk Village branch introduced herself as Ryuko.
She explained that she and Ragune had been childhood friends.
They had endured the hellish dragonfolk training together, and apparently neither had many fond memories of it. When Tauro mentioned Ragune, Ryuko muttered the familiar words, “Kill me…”
I’d better not ask about their past…
Tauro laughed inwardly and decided against making that kind of small talk.
“That completes the procedure. Please ask the client, Chief Ryuga, for the details.”
Ryuko replied with a broad smile, perhaps pleased to have successfully handled her first job as a receptionist.
“By the way, does this branch have a branch manager?”
Tauro glanced toward the back of the building, having yet to see anyone who looked like one.
“We do, but he usually goes into the shallower floors of the dungeon to support the capture team.”
“I see. About how deep are the floors you consider shallow?”
Tauro asked for reference.
“Around the fiftieth floor. Once he goes in, he may not return for nearly a month, so he probably travels back and forth among those floors.”
The fiftieth floor is shallow!? And not coming back for almost a month sounds worrying… Dragonfolk really do have a different sense of scale.
Tauro smiled wryly, becoming even more interested.
“What kind of support does he provide?”
“Hmm? He thins out the monsters, reports newly discovered rooms, draws maps, and studies monster ecology. Tauro-kun, don’t humans do that too?”
Ryuko tilted her head, as though the question itself seemed strange to her.
“We rarely have opportunities to enter dungeons. Most dungeons are controlled by the state, so ordinary people can’t even approach them.”
“Really? We dragonfolk often enter dungeons as part of our training, and they provide many benefits, so we’re generally free to come and go. Oh, now that I think about it, the branch manager did say he keeps track of outsiders entering and leaving. But you’ll be fine, Tauro. You’re the savior of our village. Thank you again.”
Ryuko thanked him with a respectful bow.
Ever since Tauro had arrived in the village, everyone he met thanked him in place of an ordinary greeting.
Some even wept as they thanked him, explaining that they had been gravely ill and close to death before his medicine saved them.
There were so many such villagers that the garrison occasionally appeared out of nowhere and stepped in before Tauro could be overwhelmed.
The villagers had no intention of troubling their benefactor, so over the past few days they had settled for thanking him whenever they passed instead of stopping him for long conversations.
Tauro thanked Ryuko for handling the formalities and left the guild.
The fact that the quest had finally been posted meant the dungeon-capture team must be ready.
The time had come for Tauro to help, and he headed toward the chief’s house in high spirits.
“Welcome, Tauro-dono. I see you accepted the quest. Did I fill everything out correctly? It was my first time writing a request form, so I was rather nervous. Wahaha!”
Chief Ryuga joked about enjoying the new experience and invited Tauro to sit.
Tauro thanked him and took the offered seat.
“I’m grateful for the request. To be honest, I panicked when I discovered there were no quests at all in this village. So… does this mean the dungeon expedition is finally beginning?”
Tauro brought up the dungeon operation that would occupy most of his time in the village.
“Yes, it is. But don’t worry. I have no intention of asking you to do anything dangerous. As stated in the request, you only need to escort the capture team between the surface and the transfer room one floor below, then send them from there to the lowest floor they’ve reached.
