Chapter 200: Promotion and…

Black-Gold Wings returned to the Dansas branch of the Adventurers’ Guild and went directly to the reception counter to report the completed request.

“Welcome back, Tauro,” Chloe said. “You were gone longer than expected. Did something happen?”

Concerned by their late return, the branch manager took over the counter from Kannes and listened to their report herself.

“Actually…”

Tauro explained the poisoned swamp, the unusual subspecies, and the extermination of more than three hundred giant poisonous frogs.

“I understand,” Chloe said when he finished. “That was work on the scale of a multi-team operation. I’ll contact the village and arrange an additional success fee. Don’t worry; the guild will compensate all three of you properly.”

She considered the report for a moment.

“You also completed the equivalent of several subjugation requests. Giant poisonous frogs are covered by an open guild request, and the number you defeated is exceptional. By my authority as branch manager, I’m promoting Ragune directly to F rank.”

Ragune’s face lit up.

“I’ll work even harder until I reach the E-rank band with both of you!”

“There’s one other matter,” Chloe continued. “You were looking for another vanguard, correct? One adventurer has expressed interest in joining your team. You’re free to refuse him.”

Her tone made it clear that she had reservations about the applicant.

“Could we discuss him tomorrow?” Tauro asked. “We still need to write our report, and everyone is exhausted. I’d like the team to rest after that.”

“Of course. I should have noticed how tired you were.”

Chloe helped Tauro organize the written report. Aeris and Ragune joined in, and the three completed it quickly.

“Well done. Ragune, here is your new F-rank tag.”

Chloe handed her an iron adventurer tag. Ragune immediately threaded it onto its cord and hung it around her neck.

“At this pace, you’ll reach the E-rank band before long,” Tauro said.

“With Ragune’s actual ability, even the E-rank band is probably beneath her,” Aeris replied.

She was right. Ragune might advance to D rank surprisingly quickly. Tauro’s greater concern was ensuring that he and Aeris didn’t become the ones holding her back.

Tauro and Aeris headed home after leaving the guild. Ragune, however, ran toward the Dwarf Inn.

“Why is she going to the inn?” Aeris wondered. “She already has her own house.”

“She probably wants fried food,” Tauro said with a laugh.

“She does love pork cutlets… But eating too many will make her gain weight. I should warn her next time.”

Aeris spoke with the gravity of someone drawing upon personal experience.

The next morning, all three returned to the guild to hear about the prospective vanguard.

Adding another front-line fighter would allow Tauro to operate more freely from the middle or rear of the formation. Aeris would carry less pressure, and the team could return to the balanced structure it had possessed before Shin and Rumeya left.

That was exactly what Tauro wanted. Chloe’s reluctance to recommend the applicant nevertheless concerned him.

“He gave me permission to explain his adventuring history,” Chloe said after leading the three into a private room.

“His name is Ankh. He’s a twenty-six-year-old man who belonged to the Royal Capital guild headquarters before coming to Dansas. He registered as an adventurer only about a month ago, yet he’s already reached E-minus rank.”

“In a single month?” Tauro asked. “That’s remarkably fast.”

“Either he’s exceptionally capable,” Aeris said, “or he purchased the promotion.”

Those were the obvious possibilities.

Either way, it was difficult to understand why such a man had come to a rural village and asked to join Black-Gold Wings.

Tauro couldn’t judge him without meeting him. He told Chloe that the team would speak with Ankh.
