Chapter 196: Days of G-Rank Quests
Tauro and Aeris spent the following days completing G-rank requests with Ragune, occasionally mixing in medicinal-herb gathering quests.
G-rank work consisted mostly of simple errands, but higher-ranked adventurers could still receive favorable evaluations for completing it because such requests contributed directly to the guild and the local community. Tauro and Aeris therefore had no objection to helping Ragune build her record.
Ragune, however, gradually began to worry that she was holding them back.
“My rank isn’t rising quickly enough. I want to become useful to both of you as soon as possible… Kuh, kill me…”
“Don’t panic,” Tauro said with a laugh. “You were only just registered at G rank, and your progress is already unusually fast.”
“He’s right,” Aeris added. “You’re not inconveniencing us. If Black-Gold Wings receives a nominated request, you can participate with the team even when the request is above your personal rank.”
Ragune’s expression brightened.
“Truly?”
“Yes,” Tauro replied. “Completing a higher-ranked request may not count toward your normal promotion assessment, but the guild can allow it when your ability and the team arrangement are appropriate. Of course, Black-Gold Wings rarely receives nominated requests…”
Ragune had been frustrated because the recent work gave the three of them few opportunities to practice fighting together.
“Then I’d be delighted to accompany you on the next team request.”
Her opportunity arrived sooner than expected.
“The guild has received a nominated request for Black-Gold Wings,” Tauro told Ragune and Aeris.
“Then I can participate!” Ragune exclaimed.
“A village two days south of Dansas wants us to investigate abnormal changes in a nearby swamp. The contamination is damaging the surrounding land.”
“Why was the request assigned specifically to us?” Aeris asked. “An investigation could normally be handled by many other adventurers.”
“The swamp appears to be contaminated with poison. Chloe decided that my [Complete Poison Resistance] and [Purification] might be particularly useful.”
“You possess complete resistance to poison and can use [Purification]?” Ragune asked in astonishment. “Dragonfolk also possess strong resistance to abnormal conditions. I should be able to help as well.”
She clearly didn’t intend to miss her first chance to prove herself in the field.
“Then the two of you can take the leading roles in this assignment,” Aeris said. “But before that, both of you need to stop using titles such as ‘Sir’ and ‘Miss.’ We’ll never become closer while speaking so formally.”
Tauro laughed.
“You’re right. Ragune, may I simply call you by your name?”
“Of course. May I also call both of you Tauro and Aeris?”
She looked slightly embarrassed as she asked.
“Of course,” they answered together.
Tauro then mentioned another matter.
“The house near ours that Shin and Rumeya used to rent is vacant now. Black-Gold Wings can pay the rent, and you can live there if you wish. You’ve been commuting from the dragonfolk village with [Dimensional Corridor], haven’t you?”
Tauro and Aeris had previously helped improve the neighboring house, so it was comfortable and conveniently close to their own home. If another team member was going to occupy it, Ragune was the obvious choice.
“May I really live there?” Ragune asked. “[Dimensional Corridor] consumes a great deal of magic power, so repeatedly traveling between the two villages is difficult. Living in Dansas would help enormously.”
“Then we’ll be neighbors from now on!” Aeris said happily.
Aeris was pleased that the distance between them was already shrinking. Tauro wasn’t particularly skilled at becoming close to people either, so he was grateful that Aeris could naturally help the new team grow comfortable together.
