Chapter 195: A G-Rank Adventurer
After finally introducing themselves, Tauro and Aeris decided that their first task should be registering Ragune as an adventurer.
As they left the forest and entered Dansas, the scales visible across Ragune’s body immediately drew attention.
“This won’t do,” she muttered. “I especially dislike being mistaken for lizardfolk.”
She cast a simple visual-obstruction spell. The scales vanished from sight, although her horns remained visible.
“Now I should avoid causing a commotion.”
“Amazing,” Aeris said. “That’s visual-obstruction magic, isn’t it?”
“Yes. Mine is only basic, so it can conceal my scales but not my horns.”
“People may mistake you for sheepfolk instead.”
“That’s not ideal either… but being inconspicuous is more important. Kuh…”
Tauro laughed softly.
“When you register, make sure you state that you’re dragonfolk. Giving false information during your first registration would cause serious trouble later.”
“Of course. I’m proud to be dragonfolk. I only conceal my appearance because I don’t wish to create unnecessary confusion.”
They went directly to the Adventurers’ Guild. Chloe, the Dansas branch manager, happened to be helping at the reception counter.
“You’re back early today,” Chloe said. She looked at Ragune. “Is she an adventurer visiting from another branch?”
Ragune carried herself like an experienced warrior, so Chloe naturally assumed that she was already registered elsewhere.
“This is Ragune,” Tauro explained. “She would like to register as an adventurer for the first time.”
“Her first registration? I’m surprised. She certainly looks and feels like a veteran.”
Chloe began the procedure. After explaining the guild’s basic rules, she used the guild’s magical device to appraise Ragune’s registration information.
Her normally composed expression changed immediately.
“Dragonfolk?” she whispered, careful not to reveal a registrant’s private information to the rest of the room.
“Yes,” Ragune whispered back. “For various reasons, I’ve decided to become an adventurer and assist Tauro and Aeris.”
“Then you’ll be joining Black-Gold Wings?”
Ragune nodded, and Chloe completed both the individual registration and the team paperwork.
“This tag proves that you’re a registered adventurer,” Chloe explained as she handed Ragune a tag and cord. “Replacing it costs money, so don’t lose it. A stolen tag can’t be used as someone else’s identification; the guild’s verification devices will immediately detect that it belongs to another person. I recommend wearing it around your neck.”
“Understood.”
Ragune threaded the tag onto the cord and put it on at once.
“Now Ragune is officially part of our team!” Aeris said happily. “I’d already like to call you our companion, but first we must earn your trust and friendship. Then perhaps you’ll agree to the blood pact.”
“For now, shall we complete a G-rank quest together?” Tauro suggested.
He led Ragune to the guild’s quest board.
“Adventurers normally choose work from this board and then take the request to the reception counter,” Aeris explained. “After completing it, we return to the guild, submit the proof or report, and receive the reward.”
“So this is how adventurers earn their living.”
Ragune studied the board with interest.
“The three of us can begin with this request to help build a fence around the village,” Aeris said. “I can cut logs with wind magic, Tauro can shape the wood, and Ragune can transport it with [Magic Storage].”
“Fence building is adventurer work too? I assumed the guild dealt mainly with monsters.”
“G-rank requests are usually simple errands and community work that almost anyone can perform,” Tauro explained. “Higher ranks gradually gain access to more difficult assignments.”
“That sounds interesting.”
They accepted the request and soon reached the logging site outside the village. The supervisor briefly explained the work, assigned their tasks, and let them begin.
Once they started, the result was almost inevitable.
Aeris felled and trimmed the required trees with controlled wind magic. Tauro processed the logs rapidly, and Ragune carried enormous quantities without difficulty through [Magic Storage]. Despite beginning late in the day, the three of them exceeded the assigned quota in very little time.
Ragune had been enjoying herself so much that she looked disappointed when the supervisor told them the work was finished.
“Is it already over? What a shame.”
The supervisor thanked them sincerely and signed the document confirming completion of the request. Ragune’s disappointment immediately turned to pleasure.
“Being thanked for helping someone is surprisingly enjoyable.”
“It’s,” Tauro agreed. “Hearing a client’s gratitude is one of the best parts of the work.”
Her words reminded him of how he had felt when he first became an adventurer. Ragune’s straightforward delight made him want to earn her trust and be recognized as her true companion even more.
