Chapter 193: Reunion
Ragune’s sudden appearance left Tauro and Aeris with only one question.
“Why are you still here?” they asked at the same time.
When they had first parted from her, Ragune had immediately run south even though the Antas Mountains and the dragonfolk village lay to the north. Tauro and Aeris had naturally suspected that she was terrible with directions.
Almost a month had passed since then. That should have been enough time for her to reach the distant village if she had traveled normally. If she had spent the entire month wandering in circles only to return to Dansas, the situation would have been disastrous – especially with an epidemic threatening her people.
“I came back to thank you for the medicine,” Ragune said. “Thanks to you, our village was saved. Thank you!”
She bowed deeply.
“The village was saved?” Tauro asked. “Does that mean you actually returned there?”
“Of course. I went home, used the herbs you gave me to prepare the medicine exactly as you taught me, and cured the disease. Afterward, the chief ordered me to return and thank you on the village’s behalf.”
Tauro stared at her. In less than a month, Ragune had apparently reached the village, prepared enough medicine for the sick, confirmed that the epidemic had been brought under control, and then returned to Dansas.
There was no way she could have completed both journeys on foot.
Could dragonfolk fly?
Ragune noticed Tauro looking toward her back.
“Oh, I understand. You’re wondering whether I have wings, aren’t you?”
She turned around to show him.
“I don’t. As I told you before, dragonfolk aren’t greatly different from humans. We have horns and scales, but no wings. Hahaha!”
“Then did you really run all the way back to your village?” Aeris asked.
That would almost have been more astonishing.
“I can’t reveal every detail, even to my benefactors,” Ragune replied. “However, I can tell you that I possess an ability that allows me to return to the village almost instantly. In truth, I spent several peaceful days there after the epidemic ended before coming back. I apologize for making you worry.”
She continued, “The chief instructed me to give you whatever reward you desire. Gold, a complete set of weapons and armor, valuable magic tools, rare materials – name anything, and I’ll provide it. What would you like?”
Ragune looked ready to empty the contents of [Magic Storage] onto the ground.
Tauro exchanged a glance with Aeris. They nodded to each other.
“We don’t need a reward,” Tauro said. “Instead, Ragune, would you consider joining our team?”
“What?”
Ragune stared at him in complete surprise.
She had expected them to request treasures from the dragonfolk storehouse. Her village regarded the people who had saved them as benefactors deserving almost any reward, and the chief had repeatedly ordered her to satisfy whatever request they made.
Being asked to join their adventuring team wasn’t something she had imagined.
“Our two front-line members recently left for personal reasons,” Aeris explained. “We’ve been searching for someone to take their place. We’d be very happy if you joined us.”
Ragune hesitated.
“The dragonfolk treasure house contains objects that nations would fight to possess. Are you certain you’d rather have me?”
“Those treasures matter less to me than gaining a companion like you,” Tauro answered.
“I can’t make that decision entirely on my own. I must ask the chief.”
Apparently flustered, Ragune used the ability she had previously kept secret. She vanished from the spot without warning.
“What?” Tauro and Aeris exclaimed together.
One moment Ragune had been standing before them; the next, she was gone.
“So that’s the ability she mentioned,” Tauro said.
“It looked like some kind of transfer magic,” Aeris replied.
“I’m jealous. I’d gladly exchange my [Spatial Transfer] for something with that range.”
Aeris turned toward him in surprise.
“When did you learn [Spatial Transfer]?”
Tauro explained how he had acquired it inside Babylon’s dungeon distortion, then decided to demonstrate. He disappeared for an instant and reappeared roughly a meter away.
“The distance may be short, but that’s still amazing!” Aeris said.
At that moment, Ragune returned.
She recoiled when Tauro vanished and reappeared directly in front of her.
“Was that [Spatial Transfer]?”
Her reaction suggested that she knew something about the ability.
“Yes. Welcome back,” Tauro said while drinking a magic-restoration potion to recover the power consumed by the skill. “Did you receive an answer from your chief?”
Aeris watched Ragune expectantly.
Ragune was still curious about the [Spatial Transfer] she had just witnessed, but the two of them were clearly waiting for her response. She took a breath and prepared to deliver the chief’s decision.
