Chapter 192: The Pair’s Troubles
The Dansas branch’s emergency battle against the ogre horde ended in victory, though the cost was heavy.
Sadly, some adventurers couldn’t be saved even with potions and healing magic.
Even so, the outcome was considered a great success. At the beginning, the guild could easily have concluded that rescuing the neighboring village was impossible.
Bob had played a central role in the victory. Although he had only recently entered the C-rank band, his performance earned him another promotion within it—an unusually rapid advancement.
Other C-rank adventurers who distinguished themselves against the ogres were promoted as well.
Guild regulations didn’t allow adventurers in the D- and E-rank bands to receive ordinary promotions merely for fighting monsters far above their assigned level. Instead, they received compensation from the village and special bonuses from the guild.
Tauro and Aeris were also paid additional rewards for their exceptional assistance and for the large number of potions Tauro had supplied.
Kannes, the receptionist with the appraisal ability, handed them their payment.
“Thank you both for your work on the emergency quest. Tauro’s potions saved many lives, so the guild has included an additional payment. You also assisted with recovering and transporting the ogre corpses, and that work is reflected in the total.”
Tauro noticed that his money pouch was visibly larger than those being given to most of the other adventurers.
“Thank you.”
After completing the formalities, Tauro and Aeris left the guild.
“I’m glad we won, but it was a very close battle…” Aeris said.
“Bob’s aggressive fighting at the front made an enormous difference,” Tauro replied. “If I had served as the main front-line fighter, I don’t think the battle would have gone nearly as well. We need to find a proper vanguard for Black-Gold Wings as soon as possible.”
“I agree. You’re extremely versatile and good at controlling a battle, but producing that kind of sustained offensive pressure from the front would still be difficult.”
They decided to recruit adventurers capable of serving as their vanguard.
A week passed after the guild posted Black-Gold Wings’ recruitment notice on its board.
The team had a strong record in Dansas, so Tauro assumed someone would apply.
He had been overly optimistic.
Most of Black-Gold Wings’ visible achievements during the previous several months had been earned by Shin and Rumeya while they were working with Yu and Ren.
Even before that, other adventurers remembered Shin and Rumeya as the team’s dependable front line and Aeris as its primary magical firepower.
Tauro, by contrast, was commonly seen as the young leader who carried supplies in [Magic Storage] and distributed potions. Aeris was known as a talented rear-line fighter, but her age still made many adults view her as inexperienced.
Now that Shin and Rumeya were gone, prospective applicants were uncertain whether the remaining boy and girl were people they could safely entrust their backs to.
Tauro possessed far more achievements than most adventurers of his rank, but many of those accomplishments were unknown or poorly understood within the village guild.
Chloe supported the recruitment effort and personally vouched for Tauro and Aeris. However, because she was known primarily as a branch manager rather than an active field adventurer, her endorsement did little to overcome the applicants’ doubts.
“I wanted to find a vanguard before we entered the D-rank band, but this may be harder than I expected,” Tauro said with an uncharacteristic sigh.
“You’re right,” Aeris replied. “And when you think about it, not many grown men would willingly accept orders from a boy.”
The difficulty reminded them once again how much Shin and Rumeya had meant to the team.
That day, Tauro and Aeris were in the forest completing their familiar combination of medicinal-herb gathering and goblin subjugation.
Aeris had grown accustomed to adventuring as a pair. Under Tauro’s guidance, she had also become remarkably skilled at using her staff in close combat—enough to embarrass some adventurers whose actual profession specialized in front-line fighting.
At first, she had disliked being splashed with blood. However, Tauro’s [Purification] removed even stubborn stains more thoroughly than her own [Clean], so she no longer hesitated and her movements had improved considerably.
Suddenly, [Presence Detection] alerted Tauro to someone approaching.
“Oh! Savior of our village! I never expected to meet you here again!”
The familiar voice belonged to a woman.
She emerged from the bushes before them.
“Ragune!”
Tauro and Aeris stared in astonishment at the tall dragonfolk woman with long black hair tied in a ponytail, golden eyes, horns, and scales.
She should have been nowhere near Dansas.
