Chapter 174: Their Destination in the Dungeon
Once the knights realized that Tauro was no ordinary boy, they allowed him to help fight their way forward.
Seeing that, Aeris wanted to join in as well.
The staff Tauro had made for her was sturdy enough to be used as a striking weapon. Its original magic stone had also been replaced with the one obtained from the griffon defeated near the mountain village, allowing the staff to gain the wind attribute when infused with magic power.
The knights were reluctant to let the people they were escorting fight. However, their destination was the place where Aeris’s father had disappeared. Letting her move and release some of her pent-up anxiety seemed better than forcing her to remain tense and silent in the darkness.
In the end, they permitted Tauro and Aeris to fight as long as they stayed within safe limits.
“Even so, aren’t those two far too accustomed to combat for children their age?”
One of the escorting knights murmured to a companion, sounding both shocked and impressed.
“I was thinking the same thing…”
“They’re both adventurers. Of course they’re experienced,” Taichi interjected from beside them.
“What? But she’s the daughter of Marquis Van Dyne, isn’t she?”
“Until the recent incident, she had left home and was working as an adventurer.”
“That explains it…”
As the knights continued to marvel at them, the group turned a corner at the end of the maze and came upon a staircase.
“We’ve arrived. There’s a passage beside that staircase. Follow it and you’ll reach a room,” Captain Tsuyoku explained to Tauro and Aeris.
When they drew closer, they saw that there was indeed a narrow passage beside the stairs.
Captain Tsuyoku led the way, and Aeris followed him until they reached a chamber enclosed by white stone walls.
“As you can see, it’s a large, empty room. However, Marquis Van Dyne reportedly vanished immediately after entering it.”
Captain Tsuyoku said there was nothing there, but Tauro could plainly see something suspicious.
It resembled the opening to another space, much like the entrance that appeared when [Magic Storage] was opened.
Apparently, no one else could see it.
Then Aeris tilted her head, seeming to notice it as well.
“What’s that?”
She pointed toward the strange distortion.
“What’s what?”
Captain Tsuyoku looked where she was pointing, but there was nothing visible to him.
“Aeris, maybe we’re the only ones who can see it,” Tauro said.
“Can you two see something?”
Tsuyoku looked between them in confusion.
Tauro moved closer to the distortion that only he and Aeris seemed able to perceive, and Aeris followed him.
Seen up close, it resembled a narrow rift in space.
“Could this be…?”
Tauro leaned toward the opening to inspect it.
“Tauro, that’s dangerous!”
Aeris immediately grabbed him and tried to pull him back.
The next moment, both of them vanished from before Captain Tsuyoku and the escorting knights.
“Huh? Where did the walls go?”
The instant they passed through the dimensional rift, the chamber walls disappeared from Tauro’s view. When he looked behind him, he saw Aeris and the rift through which they had entered.
They appeared to have crossed into a separate space.
It was a vast, empty expanse. The cobblestone floor was identical to the dungeon’s, but no walls or ceiling could be seen no matter how far they looked.
“What’s this place?” Aeris asked, still gripping Tauro’s arm.
“I think we’re in another dimension.”
“Another dimension?”
“Yeah. We must have entered it through that rift. Wait… Is that a person?”
Tauro noticed a distant figure at the far end of the enormous space.
“Hey! You over there!”
He called out loudly.
The figure had been sitting down. Upon hearing Tauro, the man rose, picked up the belongings beside him, and ran toward them.
“What…?”
Aeris initially tensed behind Tauro as the stranger approached, but when his face came into view, she froze in astonishment.
“Do you know him?” Tauro asked, already suspecting who the man must be.
“Papa!”
“You wandered in here too? Hm? Aeris? Is that really you? Why are you here?!”
The man running toward them was a blond-haired, red-eyed older gentleman dressed in aristocratic clothing and expensive-looking leather armor.
He stared in shock when he noticed Aeris standing partly behind Tauro.
“You must be Marquis Van Dyne. Let’s get out of here first. We may not have much time.”
Before Aeris and her father could become absorbed in their unexpected reunion, Tauro seized each of them by the arm, pulled them toward the rift, and plunged through it.
