Chapter 165: Opening the Safe

Tauro would have preferred Mei to leave the office, but she clearly had no intention of going until she found what she was searching for. Since they appeared to share the same objective, he decided to reveal himself.

“What are you doing?”

Mei stiffened and slowly turned toward the voice. When she saw the boy who had arrived with Aeris, some of the tension left her face.

“Are you lost? You shouldn’t be wandering through this part of the residence. Leave now, and I won’t report you to the Marchioness.”

“I think you’re the one who would be in trouble if anyone found you here.”

“What are you implying? I was merely looking for something on my mistress’s behalf. Please don’t make baseless accusations.”

“I could ask the Marchioness whether that’s true, but that would cause problems for you, Aeris, and me. We don’t have much time, so please step aside.”

Tauro moved past her and stopped in front of the massive safe.

“What are you doing?” Mei asked.

“Opening it.”

“You can’t. That’s why I was searching for the other key…”

Mei stopped as soon as she realized what she had admitted.

“Then we really do have the same goal,” Tauro said. “I want to open the safe for Aeris. You do too, don’t you?”

“Of course I do. Everything I’m doing is for Lady Aeris.”

“Then we’re allies.”

Tauro smiled, but Mei looked uneasily at the locks.

“One key is already inserted, but I can’t find the other one.”

“The Marchioness is carrying it. I saw its shape with [True Eye], so I’ll make a duplicate.”

He removed a small piece of iron from [Magic Storage], enclosed it between his hands, and activated [Creation Magic (Weak)]. The metal reshaped itself into a copy of the missing key.

“What…?”

Mei stared at the key that had appeared between his palms.

“[Creation Magic (Weak)] consumes a great deal of magic power. I was prepared to pick the lock with wire, but copying the key is faster.”

Tauro inserted the new key and turned it. A solid click came from inside the safe.

“But the magical lock hasn’t been released yet,” Mei said.

“Aeris has already opened it from the reception room with her barrier magic.”

Tauro pulled the heavy door open. Even with the strength and dexterity granted by [Divine Archer], he could feel its weight.

The interior was packed with coins, precious metals, works of art, and stacks of important documents.

“Searching all of this will take too long,” Mei murmured.

“Not with [Magic Storage].”

In an instant, Tauro transferred everything inside the safe into his storage.

“The entire contents disappeared…”

“Now I only need to retrieve what we came for.”

He called out the relevant documents. Contracts and written orders appeared in his hands, recording the arrangements concerning Marquis Van Dyne’s abduction, Aeris’s kidnapping and assassination, and the attempts on Tauro’s life.

“I should return everything else.”

Tauro restored the remaining contents to the safe. They were more neatly arranged than before, making it obvious that someone had disturbed them, but concealment no longer mattered. The documents were enough.

“Will those papers save Lady Aeris?” Mei asked.

“Yes. Once the Royal Guard sees them, the Marchioness can be arrested.”

Tauro placed the evidence safely inside [Magic Storage].

“Please bring the knights waiting outside. I’ll return to Aeris.”

He bowed politely and started toward the door.

“Wait. What’s your name?”

“Tauro. I’m Aeris’s friend.”

“I’m Mei, the head maid. Thank you for looking after Lady Aeris.”

Mei bowed deeply. She had cared for Aeris since she was an apprentice maid, and her gesture carried the weight of someone entrusting a precious family member to him.
