Chapter 39: Duel with Julian②

“Two hundred gold coins as promised. You’ll duel for Lady Celia.”

“Sigh…”

My pleasant mood was completely ruined. I was just enjoying a nice meal with Celia in a good atmosphere, and now… this is going to cost you dearly.

But Julian and Engelbrecht moved faster than I expected. Even as the heirs of a count’s house, I thought it would take them longer to gather the funds…

It seems I miscalculated.

Since they brought the gold coins as agreed, I have to duel. But… using Celia as a wager gives me a serious sense of guilt.

Celia looked at me with worry in her eyes.

“Don’t worry, Celia. I’ll take care of them in no time.”

“Yes…”

Julian, clearly annoyed by my words, stepped forward.

“That’s my line! I may have fallen behind last time, but it won’t happen again!”

“Another duel?”

Just then, a figure approached, accompanied by three female students. It was Anneliese.

Royalty usually dines in their private hall, so she rarely shows up here… why is she here now?

“I shall take charge of this duel!”

“…What?”

What is she suddenly talking about, barging in like this?

However, even someone like this is still a princess of this country. If a princess says she will take charge, we have no choice but to follow. But…

Why is Julian, who would normally be the first to snap, staying quiet?

You’d expect him to complain regardless of rank…

“Then, Princess Anneliese, what do you intend to do about this duel?”

Engelbrecht asked Anneliese, but there was no sense of urgency in his voice. A duel with 200 gold coins on the line had been interrupted. Normally, you’d expect him to be upset…

“Wouldn’t it be troublesome for everyone here? I will have the duel take place at a location I will now specify.”

“I’m fine with that!”

Anneliese and Julian looked at me, as if determined not to let me escape.

“Alright. I’m fine with that too.”

“Then let us go. This way, please.”

Anneliese guided us to the center of the grounds.

Well, considering magic might be used, this is a suitable spot. But still…

“Another duel, huh?”

“Doesn’t seem like Engelbrecht plans to back down.”

“That fat guy should just hurry up and release the slave already…”

“With 200 gold coins at stake? No way he’s releasing them.”

“But isn’t that guy only capable of using fire magic?”

“I was surprised during that one class too, but it was just a trick. He may be skilled as a magician, but as a wizard, how good is he really?”

Why are all our classmates gathering around?

It’s as if everything has been meticulously prepared as if the duel was scheduled in advance.

Well, yeah…

Even someone as thick-headed as me can tell that these guys are in cahoots.

After all, Anneliese is the main heroine. She’s probably in league with Julian. Perhaps Anneliese is using the duel with me as a way to make contact with Julian.

I’m even coming up with such speculations.

“This should be fine. I will act as the referee.”

What’s with this princess? She seems so enthusiastic about it. She declared it with a triumphant expression.

“Alright! Hey, fat guy! Let’s settle this!”

“Ugh… Fine then…”

“Come on, draw your weapon. I’ll wait for that much.”

“Not necessary.”

I have two swords strapped to my waist. However, I don’t need to use them against Julian.

“I see. Then, don’t complain if you lose!”

“Yeah…”

“Are you ready? Then… Start!”

“Water Shot!”

At Anneliese’s signal, Julian casts a spell.

“Water Shot.” It’s a water-element spell with low power but fast activation speed.

First is a jab. That’s probably it.

But――――.

Sizzle! Sizzle! Sizzle!

Julian’s “Water Shot” vanished before it even reached my body.

“What? Huh!? What’s going on!?”

“What’s happening!?”

“What’s going on!?”

“Huh? What? Huh?”

“This can’t be real…?”

Julian, Engelbrecht, and the classmates all voiced their shock, but there’s nothing unusual about it.

“Don’t you know? Water evaporates, you know?”

“Don’t mess with me! Water Ball!”

“Oh?”

Julian follows up with another spell. Did he really master “Water Ball” in such a short time? Impressive. Truly a protagonist.

But――――it’s meaningless.

Sizzle!

“This can’t be…?”

Julian’s “Water Ball” also evaporated before it could reach me.

“Damn it! Water Ball! Stone Shot! Shadow Ball!”

Julian, now desperate, casts one spell after another. But none of them retained their power before reaching me.

“Haa… Haa… Haa… Damn it!”

However, this doesn’t last long. Julian pants heavily and curses. He’s probably run out of MP by now.

Well, even as the protagonist, he’s still at this level…

After confirming that, I set fire to the seat of Julian’s pants. Since I’m at it, I’ll make it heart-shaped. I’ll also light his head on fire and give him a bomb head.

“Hot, hot! My butt!? My head too!?”

Normally, I’d want to burn Julian’s arms or legs as well, but these guys need to work for the world according to the game.

It’s a hassle, but I can’t even leave a lasting wound, let alone kill him. That’s probably why they underestimate me. Damn it. It’s frustrating…

“Don’t touch me! If you touch me, my hair will fall out and I’ll go bald!”

The next day, Julian’s anguished cry, with his head singed and frizzy, echoed through the classroom.
