Chapter 59: A Town Without People Becomes a Ghost Town. So Then…

“They say everyone’s finally evacuated from Lindor.”

Ivern said this as he set down a load of supplies.

“You know, i’ve been thinking about this for a while. Where do you even get all these little details?”

He’d always been good at gathering rumors around town, but lately, his intel had gotten remarkably accurate.

This guy might actually have a future as an informant.

Curious, I decided to ask, and Ivern immediately began explaining with a casual “Oh, that’s simple.”

“You know those Weimar guards stationed at the forest entrance?”

“Yeah, the ones ‘volunteering’ to do it.”

Ivern gave me a skeptical look, while Nara-kun, who didn’t know the context, looked confused.

“Wait, those guards are voluntarily patrolling here?”

Nara-kun asked.

“Not a chance. It’s half-forced. Kenta pressured them into it.”

“Ah, classic Maya-san.”

Nara-kun muttered in awe.

“What are you so shocked about? I didn’t ask them to do it.”

I mean, I did mention something about taking care of us if those ridiculous wanted posters caused any trouble…

“So, what about those guards?”

I asked Ivern.

“Oh, right. Since I’m the only one going in and out of the forest, I’ve been getting chummy with the new guards. They’ve been telling me all kinds of things.”

“…You realize they’re just using you as a convenient messenger, right?”

“Wow, no wonder the intel’s so accurate!”

Nara-kun said, completely oblivious.

Well, he’s still pretty naive. He doesn’t realize that no royal family in this world would have guards spreading such information out of pure goodwill.

“So? What’s the latest from the messenger?”

I asked Ivern, leaning into the joke.

“Messenger?”

Ivern repeated, looking puzzled.

Oh, right. They probably don’t have that word here.

“Never mind. What’d they say?”

“Well, yeah, they mentioned something… How’d you know?”

“Isn’t it obvious? With towns, villages, and even the capital left abandoned, with all their buildings still intact, it’s a perfect setup for criminals to make their hideouts.”

Ivern let out a quiet “Oh,” clearly impressed.

“They said the exact same thing. And because of it, they’re having to divert manpower to patrol the borders.”

“What? Were you eavesdropping on my conversation with them?”

“Don’t need to. It’s common sense.”

Weimar must be using Ivan as a roundabout way to feed me information. They probably want to divert my attention away from them and onto other issues.

Whether that strategy will work or not, who knows? But for now, they’re just throwing information my way.

“Not that it matters to me, though.”

Lindor only left me with bad memories. It’s the country that abducted me, tricked me into compliance with lies, and betrayed me in the end.

I have zero sympathy for it.

With that, I considered the Lindor discussion closed and picked up a sack of grain from Ivern’s supplies to carry home. Nara-kun, however, seemed lost in thought.

“What’s up, Nara-kun? Hurry up and grab the rest of the supplies.”

My words snapped him out of his daze. He rushed over to me with a determined look.

“Maya-san!”

“What?”

“If Lindor’s empty now, why don’t you take over the territory!?”

“Are you stupid?”

“Ow!”

After hearing his ridiculous suggestion, I gave him a swift smack on the head.

Clutching his head, Nara-kun crouched down in pain.

“Don’t just sit there sulking. Go carry the supplies!”

I said, but he glared at me with teary eyes.

“That hurt! It was a great idea! Why’d you hit me!?”

“What’s so great about it? I just built you a house, didn’t I?”

“…Oh.”

This guy… After I went out of my way to help him and Eva build a home, he comes up with this nonsense?

Oh, I see how it is.

“Why don’t you just go to Lindor instead, Nara-kun.”

“Wait, I’m sorry! But my idea only works if you’re there, Maya-san. It’s pointless if I go alone!”

“So, I’m essential to this brilliant plan?”

“Exactly! You know how to fix that barren land, don’t you? I have no idea how to do it, so without you, nothing will happen!”

“Then it’ll never happen.”

Ignoring his babbling, I carried the supplies into the house.

Nara-kun followed me inside moments later.

“Hey, what about the rest of the supplies?”

“But it’s a great idea, right? If it’s Maya-san, you could easily take over a whole country!”

“I’m not doing anything that troublesome. Besides, if I took control of Lindor, they’d form a Kenta-Maya Extermination Army for sure.”

They’d march toward Maya Castle, standing in the middle of that barren wasteland, with a united army bent on my destruction.

And since I’m the target, even demons might join the cause.

That would totally make me the final boss.

“I’m fine right here. I don’t need any more space than this.”

“Yeah, you’re right. Even if we took over a whole city, we’d never be able to manage it with just us.”

“Exactly. If you get it now, then this conversation is over. Go take the supplies for your house back home.”

“Got it.”

With that, Nara-kun gave a quick reply and turned to leave, but for some reason, he stopped and looked back at me.

“Speaking of which, abandoned towns are called ghost towns, right?”

“Yeah.”

“So what do you call it when it’s an entire country?”

“I don’t know! Just go already!”

It’s such a trivial question, but now I can’t stop thinking about it!

What would you call it?

Ghost Country?

Never heard of such a term.

And honestly, in any normal world, it’d be impossible for a country’s land to remain unclaimed after its collapse.

This world really is messed up.
