Chapter 55: The Summoning Magic Circle

“Alright, if the information is accurate, the King of Admos and his entourage should show up here soon.”

“Uh, isn’t that them?”

I followed Nara-kun’s pointing finger and used detection magic.

“Yeah, that’s probably them. There’s no way this many people would gather in such a remote place.”

“So, time to execute the plan?”

Ivern responded to my words.

Today, Ivern was accompanying us.

As for our location, we were near the ruins in Lindor Kingdom that contained a summoning magic circle.

After Mona informed us of the Admos King’s departure date, we calculated the timing for their arrival here and came to disrupt their summoning.

Mona, however, stayed behind due to her responsibilities at home.

Instead, Ivern volunteered to come along.

Since we didn’t know the exact day they’d arrive, we’d been camping out here for several days.

As a former explorer, Ivern was accustomed to this sort of camping life.

When I fought against the Demon Kingdom as a summoned person, the army took care of everything, so I never acquired those skills.

The same goes for Nara-kun.

Thus, we relied on Ivern’s expertise.

Ivern, enjoying the rare chance for an all-male camping trip, readily agreed.

Sometimes, a little change of pace like this is necessary.

Now that the royal entourage was in sight, Ivern started packing up the tents.

“Still, Maya-san, isn’t there some magic like inventory or an item box? It’d make camping way easier.”

Oh, Nara-kun, surprising cultural knowledge there.

“Yeah, I’ve tried that.”

“…And since you’re not using it now, I take it it didn’t work?”

“It’s not that it didn’t work—something weird happened. The space opened up, but anything I put in there disappeared.”

When I said that, Nara-kun shivered.

“N-no way… Lost between dimensions…”

“Given that interdimensional summoning actually exists, that’s a pretty plausible theory.”

The test involved a random rock I found lying around, so it wasn’t a big deal, but if it had been something important, it would’ve been catastrophic.

Thus, I don’t use such magic.

“Although, it could be handy for hiding things.”

As I said that, Nara-kun and Ivern exchanged glances.

“I didn’t hear anything just now.”

“…So that’s where they ended up, huh?”

Hey, you two catch on way too quickly.

That aside, something had been bugging me.

“Fine, forget it. By the way… Nara-kun.”

“Yeah? What’s up?”

“I’ve been wanting to ask since we got here.”

“Hm?”

“Do you remember anything from the moment you were summoned?”

When I asked, Nara-kun looked away awkwardly.

“…Sorry, not really. It’s all kind of a blur.”

“That’s only natural since you’d just been summoned. But don’t you feel something’s off about the atmosphere here?”

“…Now that you mention it, maybe.”

“Yeah, it’s been four years, so my memory’s fuzzy too, but I can say this for certain.”

I scanned our surroundings as I spoke.

“…It wasn’t a barren wasteland like this.”

Nara-kun’s eyes widened in realization.

“Now that I think about it… yeah, the landscape was different! It was much greener!”

“Thought so.”

I continued surveying the area around the ruins, piecing together my thoughts.

Back when I was summoned, I was utterly confused and immediately loaded into a carriage, so my memories are hazy. Still, I’m sure it didn’t look like this.

There used to be more vegetation.

The trees and grass that were once abundant had disappeared over the past few years, leaving behind a desolate wasteland.

The implications of this…

“!!??”

A hypothesis that I hadn’t considered before flashed through my mind.

As that thought struck me, I instinctively began constructing a magic formula.

The royal entourage was approaching, but I didn’t care about that right now!

I completed the formula and unleashed the spell without hesitation, aiming it at the ruins.

The spell hit the entrance of the ruins and detonated inside.

Immediately after, a massive explosion erupted.

“Whoa!!??”

“What the heck, Maya-san!? What are you doing!?”

“Ivern! Have you finished packing up the tent!?”

“Y-yeah! All done!”

“Then grab the gear! We’re getting out of here!”

At my command, Ivern reflexively grabbed the luggage and latched onto my arm. Nara-kun did the same.

The next moment, as the ruins were still engulfed in flames, I teleported us back home.

“Oh? Welcome back… What happened to you all?”

We reappeared at home, where Meyleen greeted us, only to tilt her head in confusion at our out-of-breath state.

Nara-kun, still in shock, immediately started pressing me for answers.

“Seriously, Maya-san! Why’d you do something like that out of nowhere!?”

“Yeah, Kenta. Explain yourself.”

Faced with their demands, I took a moment to organize my thoughts before speaking.

“This is just a hypothesis, but I’m pretty sure I’m right.”

As I said this, not only Meyleen but also Eva, Mona, and Yulia appeared, all gathering to hear my explanation.

“Back when I was summoned, there was much more greenery around those ruins—there were even forests.”

“!?!”

“???”

The men who had seen the site reacted sharply, while the women, who hadn’t, seemed confused.

Those two seemed to have noticed how unnatural it was.

“Wait a second… You were summoned four years ago, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Hold on a minute. Even with fuzzy memories, I’d still remember something like that. When we were summoned, there weren’t any forests around.”

Nara-kun’s words confirmed my suspicions.

This wasn’t just conjecture—it was a hypothesis nearing the truth.

“So you two figured it out. My guess is that the magic circle… draws mana from the surrounding area to activate. The people of the past probably knew this, which is why they only performed summons once every few decades. But…”

“Because they summoned twice in such a short period…”

“The mana in the surrounding area was depleted…”

Nara-kun trailed off, seemingly realizing the implications on his own.

“So, if they tried a third summoning, who knows what would happen to that area…”

“Which is why you destroyed the ruins to prevent it?”

Ivern picked up where Nara-kun left off, his tone now understanding.

“Exactly. Do I really look like the kind of person who’d blow up ruins on a whim?”

“…Yes.”

Apparently, I do.

The women also seemed to grasp the severity of the situation after hearing our discussion.

“Goodness…”

“So… what about the magic circle and the summoning!?”

Eva, clearly concerned about the magic circle at the root of the problem, spoke up.

“I’m not sure. I hit the ruins with enough magic to destroy them, but I don’t know if the magic circle was obliterated. I teleported us out right after, thinking we’d be discovered if we stayed.”

“So that’s why you were in such a rush.”

Meyleen said, finally understanding our frantic state.

“Exactly. Since I didn’t stick around to check the aftermath, we’ll need to investigate further.”

When I glanced at Mona and said this, she nodded her head in acknowledgment.

It seemed like she understood.

Just as I was thinking about checking the situation around the area, Yulia posed a question.

“Hey, by the way, Admos and Lindor’s kings were supposed to come today, right? What happened to them? Did they get blown up along with the ruins?”

“…Ah.”

Come to think of it, I didn’t check on their safety either.

“!?”

Even though Eva had cut ties with her father, the King of Admos, he was still her biological father.

She looked visibly shaken.

“No, no, there’s no way they got caught up in the blast. They were still quite a distance from the ruins…”

Nara-kun tried to reassure Eva, but cutting off his statement there didn’t seem like a great idea.

While Eva looked distressed for a moment, she quickly regained her composure and turned to me.

“Lord Maya, please don’t worry about it. I had no intention of ever meeting my father again. Besides, I’ve always felt that he was leading humanity in a harmful direction. Perhaps it’s better for this world if such a father steps off the stage.”

Eva said this with determination in her eyes.

“Well, we’ll get information eventually. Don’t worry too much about it.”

I tried to console Eva, but Nara-kun gave me a dry, judgmental look.

“Uh, that’s Eva’s line, you know…?”

“Is it? Well, never mind?”

“That’s not it either…”

What’s his deal?

Such a hassle.

Anyway, I need to investigate the surroundings of Lindor as soon as possible.

Things might have taken a turn for the worse.
