Chapter 41: An Afternoon in the Garden

“Ah… if I keep living like this, I’ll turn into a useless person…”

One afternoon, after eating lunch, Ivern muttered this while sprawled out on a reclining chair in the garden.

“If that’s the case, get to work. Head to the Demon Nation and gather some intel already.”

Aibarn scowled in annoyance.

“Why do I have to go to the Demon Nation, where they’re openly hostile toward humans?”

“Because the Demon Nation has begun advancing to eliminate the new summoners, right? You need to find out how big their forces are, how serious they are, and other details.”

“Sure, but… give me a break. Humans are currently banned from entering the Demon Nation. They say they’ll arrest and imprison anyone they find.”

“Just because they’re human?”

“Exactly.”

“That’s some absurd policy.”

As I expressed surprise at the Demon Nation’s extreme measures, Ivern gave me a sharp look.

“Says the one responsible for this.”

“Huh? My fault?”

“Yeah.”

Seriously?

It’s been two years since then, and they’re still holding a grudge.

“But that was Lindor’s fault for deceiving me. I didn’t even know anything about the situation in this world. So it’s not my fault.”

“Well, that’s true, but… the people in the Demon Nation don’t care about that.”

The people in the Demon Nation, huh.

“What’s with you? You’re human, but you seem pretty considerate of the demons.”

Ivern looked at me with an exasperated expression.

“Of course I am. Meyleen and Mona are demons, aren’t they? I can’t say anything that disrespects demons when they’re around.”

“Is that so?”

“You’re the weird one here.”

There’s nothing weird about it.

“Meyleen is Meyleen, and Mona is Mona.”

You don’t judge people by their race.

When I said that, Ivern looked like he had reached some kind of understanding.

“Well, that does sound like something you’d say. Besides, you’re kind of an ambiguous being yourself—are you even human or demon?”

“I’m not even from this world in the first place.”

“Fair point.”

After that conversation, I asked Ivern again.

“So? What’s the current situation with the Demon Nation?”

“Well, I heard they’ve mobilized their army toward Admos, but there’s no info yet on how the battle’s going.”

“Any news about summoners appearing?”

“Haven’t heard anything.”

“Hmm.”

If possible, I don’t want the summoners getting involved in battle.

And no, it’s not because they’re people from my world or anything.

“It’d be a hassle if they gain combat experience.”

“You mean what you said before?”

“Yeah. My biggest advantage over the new summoners is that, and losing it would be a pain.”

“True. Practical experience does make people stronger. If they showed up here in that state…”

Ivern glanced at me.

“I’d grab Yulia, Aira, and Leon and make a run for it immediately.”

“You’re the worst.”

Honestly, that’s probably the best course of action, but don’t just declare it to my face like that.

As I was thinking that, Ivern started laughing.

“Ha! I told you, didn’t I? I live true to myself.”

“Now that you mention it, you did say something like that.”

“This is the result.”

I see.

Well, if he’s willing to take Leon and run, then I guess that’s fine.

Leon is definitely adorable and important, but he doesn’t compare to Meyleen.

In fact, Leon’s cuteness partly comes from being Meyleen’s child.

If it ever comes to it, I might have to leave Leon behind, but… well, Ivern should be reliable enough to handle it.

“Alright, I’m counting on you if it comes to that.”

“Got it.”

It was only a few days later when I heard the news—

The summoners had been sent to the battlefield.
