Chapter 24: High Physical Ability doesn’t Equal Meathead… Or At Least, It Shouldn’t Be
The ones sniffing around about me didn’t target me directly—they went after Ivern and Bennett instead.
Honestly, I thought Ivern could handle himself, but Bennett was a different story.
Bennett, the landlady of Ivern’s apartment and a midwife, was an elderly woman with no combat ability whatsoever.
Taking someone like her hostage…
It disgusted me.
Still, I decided to listen in on their conversation.
Even though there was no chance I was misunderstanding the situation, I wanted to be thorough.
Silently suppressing my presence, I activated a sound amplification spell.
“This really is the right path, isn’t it?”
“…Yeah, no doubt about it. But you’ll release Bennett if I guide you properly, right?”
“That depends on your performance.”
“…”
Yeah, this was bad.
And not just bad—these guys had no intention of keeping their promises.
Judging by their wording, they were planning to eliminate both Ivern and Bennett, regardless of what Ivern did.
Conclusion:
They were scum.
So, no need to hold back.
“Ivern! Don’t worry about me! Run away on your own! You can handle it by yourself, can’t you?”
“Shut up, old hag! Do you wanna die, huh?!”
Bennett turned her head toward the man holding her captive, startled by his odd tone…
“Aahhh!!”
She screamed at the top of her lungs, horrified by the sight of his face—the upper half of it was missing.
“Oops, my bad. That must’ve been a bit too gruesome.”
I approached Bennett immediately, rescuing her and getting her out of there.
“Huh? Kenta!?”
“Hey there.”
“‘Hey there,’ really…? Wait, Kenta, you did that?”
Bennett glanced at the gory remains of the body as she asked.
“Yeah, that was me. Blasting someone’s head off with magic doesn’t take much power. It’s precise, you know?”
“…I see.”
As we talked, the soldiers finally realized they were under attack and began shouting.
“What?! Enemy attack?!”
“Hey, Ivern! The hostage is safe! Get out of there now!”
“Got it!”
Ivern shouted back, grabbing the sword from the soldier who had been pointing it at him and taking him down in one swift motion.
The remaining soldiers, still too confused to grasp the situation, were easily cut down. Soon, Ivern joined my side.
“Sorry, Kenta! I never thought they’d target Bennett-san instead of us!”
“Same here. I’m so sorry, Bennett-san. You must’ve been terrified.”
“Oh, no, it’s fine. I knew what I was getting into when I decided to involve myself with you.”
“Even so, I apologize.”
Even if she was prepared, that didn’t make it okay to drag her into this.
As I apologized to Bennett, one of the soldiers, completely oblivious to the mood, shouted loudly.
“Y-You! Do you think you’ll get away with this?!”
“Get away with what?”
“We merely rescued a hostage from scum who would stoop to such cowardly tactics. Is there a problem with that?”
I explained the situation concisely.
Bennett and Ivern both burst into laughter, while the soldier turned bright red with anger.
“Y-You dare mock us, the honorable soldiers of the Admos military?!”
“Oh, so you’re with Admos, huh?”
These guys really leaned into brawn over brains.
He’d just given away his identity without a second thought.
Admos, for the record, borders both Weimar and Lindor.
“That’s right! We are regular soldiers of the Admos army! By defying us, you’ve made an enemy of Admos! Are you ready for that?!”
“Sure.”
“…What?”
When the soldier asked me if I intended to provoke a conflict with their country, as if it were some kind of threat, I gave him a straightforward reply. For some reason, though, the Admos soldier just stood there with his mouth agape.
“Why are you looking so dumbfounded? We’ve never had any friendly relations with Admos in the first place, so it doesn’t matter whether we’re enemies or not, does it?”
Their entire premise was flawed to begin with.
When I pointed this out, the Admos soldiers started trembling.
“Y-You bastard!!”
Classic cowardly soldiers.
They all rushed at me at once—five of them in total.
They tried to overwhelm me with close combat, relying entirely on their superior physical strength.
“Here you go.”
“Gyaaah!”
I hit them with a moderately strong wind spell, and since they didn’t seem used to dealing with magic, they were effortlessly blown away.
“Ivern, mind if I borrow that sword for a second?”
“Eh? Uh, it’s not really mine, but…”
I took the sword Ivern had been holding and advanced on the Admos soldiers I had just knocked back.
Anyone who’s been thrown off balance by magic is no more than a sitting duck.
Using the swordsmanship and body-strengthening magic I’d been rigorously trained in since my summoning, I dispatched two of them in a single slash. With a reverse stroke, I cut down two more.
Seeing his comrades fall two at a time with every swing, the last remaining soldier sat down in defeat. When I pointed the sword at his face, he wet himself.
“P-Please spare me…”
“Congratulations. You get to live.”
“!?”
When I told the pleading soldier I’d spare his life, he looked incredibly relieved.
What an idiot. He didn’t even realize why he was being kept alive.
“I’m taking you to Weimar’s royal capital.”
“!?”
His face, which had just been filled with relief, now shifted to pure despair.
“I’m going to report that you and your comrades killed Weimar’s guards. If I don’t, it might get blamed on me.”
“I-If you do that, it’ll turn into an international incident…”
“You’ve already caused the incident, genius. How do you not realize that?”
He averted his eyes.
Yeah, he was totally planning to pin the blame on me.
But I’d already figured that out—that’s why I’m taking him with me.
“Anyway, I’m taking this guy, the corpses of his comrades, and the dead Weimar guards to the royal capital. Ivern, you take Bennett-san home.”
“Uh, got it.”
Now, time to contact Meyleen via telepathy and head back to the Weimar royal capital.
With the corpses of the Admos soldiers and the Weimar guards, along with the lone surviving Admos soldier tied up with rope, I teleported straight to the royal capital.
