Chapter 63: The Silent One③

I decided to tell the two of them about my relic, Silent One. I couldn’t reveal Vanish, but this one should be fine.

Besides, I wanted to learn more about Silent One. If these two explorers knew anything, they might be able to help.

“Actually, I have another relic.”

I said.

“What? So you’re like me—you have two?”

Mina asked in surprise.

“What kind of relic is it?”

Axe followed up.

“…It’s called Silent One.”

“Saint!?”

“What did you say!?”

“N-no, not Saint. It’s Silent, like being quiet!”

Well, it’s no surprise they jumped to Saint—the super-ultra-rare relic. I thought of it immediately, too.

The relic Saint is related to the supreme relic Hostia. Anyone who possesses it would instantly qualify as a first-grade explorer.

As far as public records show, no one currently owns one. Mina sighed.

“So, it’s a knockoff?”

“It’s not a fake!”

“…There’s a relic called Silent Person.”

Axe murmured.

“What kind of relic is that?”

I asked.

“It supposedly allows you to stay calm for a brief moment.”

He explained.

“That sounds useful… or not, depending on the situation.”

Mina commented.

“Apparently, it’s helpful when you need to steady yourself in critical moments.”

Axe added.

“Huh, when you put it like that, I can see the value.”

Mina admitted.

Indeed, being able to stay calm, even briefly, is a useful trait—especially for an explorer.

“Is it really just for a moment?”

“Yes, that’s what I’ve heard.”

“Wof, what does your Silent One do?”

Mina asked.

“Um… it lets me stay calm and act rationally for a certain amount of time.”

I replied.

There’s also the part about hearing voices, but that part’s still unclear to me. It might just mean my hearing becomes sharper.

“Wait, doesn’t that make it…”

Axe began.

“An upgraded version of Silent Person.”

Mina concluded.

Of course, it would be seen that way. I decided to ask anyway.

“By the way, have you ever heard of anyone owning the relic Silent One?”

“As far as I know, no.”

Axe replied.

“Same here. This is the first I’ve heard of it.”

Mina said.

“…I figured as much.”

I sighed.

Yeah, makes sense.

Axe nodded thoughtfully.

“This is a crisis situation, so I asked, but you probably shouldn’t share this kind of information too freely.”

“Yeah, like my Spiral—rare relics make you a target.”

Mina agreed.

“You’re right…”

I said.

Especially since I’m not even an explorer. If it came down to it, I could eliminate any threat, but doing so would draw attention, and I’d rather avoid that. Besides, even removing threats takes a toll on me emotionally.

Using Silent One might alleviate that, but… it feels like I’d lose something in exchange.

“Don’t worry. I won’t say a word.”

Axe reassured me.

“Me neither.”

Mina added.

“Th-thank you both.”

Maybe they understood how I felt. I appreciated it.

“You know, Axe, you seem oddly knowledgeable about relics.”

Mina said, narrowing her eyes. I’d been wondering the same thing.

Axe, seemingly expecting the comment, began his explanation.

“I’ve had my reasons. Relics are essential tools for explorers. Even if you can’t use one, knowing about them as information never hurts. That way, if you ever need to deal with one, you’ll know how to handle it.”

Dealing with relics. I understood what that implied—fighting other explorers.

In dungeons, there’s no law.

Even if national laws prohibit conflict between explorers, such rules don’t apply inside a dungeon.

Anything that happens here is permissible. That might as well be the law of the dungeon.

“‘Information is the greatest strength,’ as my mentor used to say.”

Mina said.

“That’s a fundamental rule for explorers.”

Axe agreed.

I’d better keep that in mind.

Even so, Axe and Mina seemed to be speaking more naturally with each other now.

They weren’t exactly friends, but the sense of hostility had dissipated.

Especially Axe—his previous distaste for relics seemed to have faded somewhat. I wondered what had changed.

Well, in any case, it’s a good sign.

“Still, where the heck are we?”

Mina asked.

“In a dungeon.”

Axe replied.

“I know that! But this isn’t the third floor, right? The atmosphere here is completely different. I thought it was only three floors?”

“I’m no expert, but I can make an educated guess.”

Axe began.

“No one knows how many floors this dungeon has, but originally, it was probably supposed to be a normal dungeon. However—”

“Something happened to change it.”

I interjected.

Axe nodded.

“Exactly. A seismic event altered it, transforming it into something other than a normal dungeon.”

“So, you’re saying it became more than a three-floor dungeon because of that?”

Mina asked skeptically.

“That’s just a hypothesis. We’d need to investigate further to know for sure.”

“Then why is this happening now?”

Mina pressed.

“Probably because another earthquake occurred.”

I answered.

That was my best guess.

“An earthquake… come to think of it, there was one.”

Mina said.

“I think that’s what caused the dungeon to change again.”

I explained.

“That might be true. Right now, others are working on subjugating the anomaly. If we consider that their actions caused another earthquake, it makes sense.”

“Wait, is that really how earthquakes work?”

Mina asked skeptically.

From what I remember from my previous life, earthquakes weren’t like this. But then again, this is another world.

Plus, in this country—or rather, this continent—earthquakes are extremely rare.

Axe shook his head.

“This is my first experience with one, so I wouldn’t know.”

“Same here.”

I admitted.

“Hmm. So what floor are we even on now?”

Mina asked.

No one could answer her question.

I decided to speak up.

“For now, all we can do is move forward.”

“Agreed.”

Axe said.

“Yeah, I figured as much.”

Mina sighed.

We had no other choice.

We didn’t know what lay ahead, but the only option was to keep moving.

Suddenly, six red dots appeared. My vision pierced through the wall ahead, revealing their presence.

“Both of you, enemies ahead!”

 I warned.

“What?”

Mina exclaimed.

“Is that from your relic?”

Axe asked.

“Yes. Red dots, six of them, and they’re moving. Enemies.”

I confirmed.

“That’s quite a lot.”

Mina muttered.

“Wof, can you handle it? Two per person.”

Axe asked calmly.

“Hey, wait a second. You’re just treating him like your hired hand?”

Mina protested.

“I understand.”

I interrupted, nodding.

Mina looked at me, puzzled.

“Wof…? Can you even fight?”

She asked doubtfully.

“Yes, I can fight.”

I answered confidently.

I drew my knife and got into position.
