Chapter 23: Planned Faux Pas
“What’s going on…?”
The sudden commotion among the people around me made me wonder if I had made some serious blunder. Or perhaps it was inappropriate to address the “Saint” so casually in a place like this, where the headquarters of the church are located?
In the midst of such a situation, Fimia smiled at me with a relaxed demeanor, as if she knew something I didn’t. I wanted her to explain what was happening.
“It seems as Saran-san predicted.”
“What do you mean?”
“Your slip of the tongue?”
It seemed I had indeed made some kind of mistake. I wasn’t sure which one, but perhaps it was calling Fimia “you” in this situation? No, I think I’ve called her that a few times before. What on earth caused this commotion?
“What did I do wrong?”
As Fimia led me to the edge of the venue, I asked about what had been bothering me. However, it was Saran who appeared, waiting as if ready to answer.
“It’s about the clothes.”
“…Clothes?”
“In noble society, while there are many men who send dresses to their loved ones, there aren’t many opportunities for loved ones to choose clothes for each other.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes, in noble society, women only choose clothes for their own children before they come of age, their husbands, and their fiancés.”
With a raised index finger, Saran smiled in a somewhat cheerful manner.
“In other words, what?”
“It’s perfect. The timing, the place, the flow. Truly remarkable, Jurg.”
This guy observed everything up close!
I’ve been manipulated by him again!
“Those present here today are essentially spies, observing the situation.”
“Huh?”
“They are messengers of those interested in Saran Zolark, the returning guest of the capital, the ‘Saint,’ and the suspicious hero. They’ll surely go back to their masters and report happily about what just happened.”
He talks too much.
It’s a habit of Saran’s to be in high spirits when things go according to plan.
Sigh… Well, it’s reassuring in a way, but also a little scary that even my slip of the tongue was anticipated.
“Well, it’s quite satisfying.”
“I can’t plan for everything. But you, as a man, have something special.”
“Come on, Saran-san. Don’t tease Jurg too much.”
“What are you saying? You’re an accomplice too, aren’t you?”
Fimia was left speechless by Saran’s words.
Well, yeah.
She’s probably in on it too, subtly guiding the situation.
Honestly, am I the only one who doesn’t know anything?
“By the way, what about Rolo?”
“He’s surrounded by young ladies over there. It was perfect for diverting female attention away from you.”
“Stop making Roro do that…”
With a sigh, I looked in the direction Saran pointed.
There, a corner of the venue was crowded with women in colorful dresses, and I caught a glimpse of my childhood friend among them.
“Isn’t that risky?”
“I’ve provided Rolo with some protective artifacts and measures to prevent him from being taken away. You don’t need to worry.”
He’s going so far as to do that, which means Rolo must be convinced too… probably.
“Now, Jurg. The real show begins from here, you know?”
“Huh?”
“You, with your keen senses, should understand, right? Make a strong impression.”
At Saran’s words, I glanced around and noticed several people glancing at us as if waiting for an opportunity. Their anticipation was palpable, like monsters lurking in the darkness, ready to pounce on their prey.
“Hey, give me a break…!”
◆
“Ah… I’m exhausted. Feels like coming back from the depths of a labyrinth.”
“For you Jurg, it might have been like entering a forbidden realm.”
“Yeah. Everyone keeps beating around the bush…”
Even though we’re speaking the same words, I often don’t understand what they mean, and sometimes I feel like my words aren’t getting through. Considering today’s events, I couldn’t help but feel a bit grateful for Saran’s apparent effort to accommodate us commoners.
“…So? Why are you here in my room again?”
“It’s Saran-san’s request.”
“Again? Fine, I’ll forgive it, but go back to your room.”
“Well, it’s not that simple… In fact, I’ve been asked to stay just for today, as if it were a special occasion.”
Fimia’s words made me tilt my head in confusion.
Why would it be “just for today”? But well, given the atmosphere surrounding the mansion, it might indeed be necessary to be cautious.
“Hey, Fimia. Why is this mansion being so heavily guarded?”
“What do you mean?”
“There are about ten people around the mansion, and a few more in the garden. They’re so bad at hiding that it’s annoying… Are they trying to provoke us?”
Fimia gave a small wry smile at my words. Then, she shook her head while pouring chilled fruit wine into my glass.
“Are you planning to go out and driving them away?”
“I don’t quite understand urban etiquette, but isn’t that a bit too rude?”
“Probably, but this is likely Saran-san’s doing.”
“Meaning?”
“I think he’s intentionally not driving them away.”
I couldn’t quite understand what that Saran guy was thinking. While we could still make excuses if they were outside the mansion walls, once they entered the garden, it would be beyond acceptable boundaries. After all, this was the count’s estate. Why would they deliberately overlook that?
“…Could it be?”
As I watched Fimia sitting across from me, sipping on fruit wine, I began to have a hunch. It seemed quite questionable, but knowing Saran, it wasn’t entirely implausible.
“Could it be that Saran sent you to my room for that purpose?”
“Yes, it’s to deliberately let us be observed.”
I let out a heavy sigh in response to Fimia’s confirmation. That Saran guy… He knew what he was doing, and yet, here we were.
“Hey, Fimia. You don’t have to play along with Saran, you know?”
“But, since we’re already here, why not have a little mischievous fun…? I’m sure tomorrow will be quite an uproar.”
Fimia chuckled mischievously and gently pointed to the canopy bed.
She’s showing that childish side of hers now. Well, occasionally, it’s not a bad thing.
“Well, as long as it’s all in good fun.”
At my words, Fimia’s eyes widened slightly, and her cheeks flushed faintly.
Gently lifting the innocent saint, I headed towards the bed.
