Chapter 67
And so, we begin preparations for the battle against the armored ants, including instructing the dwarves on how to use the magic gun swords and spreading the use of potatoes for food. There’s plenty to do.
In the past few days, Galatea has been busy improving the food situation using potatoes, while Vigna has been training the dwarves to enhance their combat abilities. As for me, I’ve been discussing future plans with Alvis-sama and making preparations for upcoming operations.
Finally, with things settling down, I head towards Vigna. In the echoing sound of gunfire in the mines, humans and dwarves mingle together, forming formations and engaging in practical training. As Asgardian soldiers aim and shoot at distant enemies, dwarves armed with shotgun-style magic gun swords take down the approaching armored ants, delivering finishing blows to the struggling mineral ants.
“Mission accomplished!! Well done, everyone. Don’t forget the feeling you have right now!! And if you encounter a larger force than ours, don’t hesitate to retreat!!”
“Yes, understood!!”
Not only the Asgardian soldiers but also the dwarves respond respectfully to Vigna’s instructions. Huh? Dwarves using polite language? I find it strangely impressive as I address her.
“Vigna, how’s the situation?”
“Oh, Grace. Well, they’re getting quite good at fighting. At first, it was tough because the dwarves wouldn’t listen, but once I managed to persuade them, they started obeying. Right?”
“Persuade…?”
As I ponder, a dwarf who was addressed by Vigna hurriedly salutes and responds. Did I imagine it, or did his expression briefly show a hint of fear?
“Yes, I’ve received various guidance from Vigna-sama!!”
“Huh? Wait, weren’t you using ‘I’ as your first-person pronoun before and adding something like ‘~zo’ to the end of your sentences?”
“I used to be rude. I deeply apologize!!”
“Hehe, even if it’s temporary, as a member of Asgard’s soldiers, you shouldn’t discriminate against others. I told them that if I won in arm wrestling, they should listen to me, and after I made them experience the same training Neil and others went through, they became more obedient.”
Vigna smiles as if it’s natural. Wait, did she really win against the sturdy arms of the dwarves…? And the training she mentioned was the terrifying one that awakened Neil’s questionable tendencies.
If I were to delve deeper, it seems like it could get quite scary.
“We seem to be in good shape here… I’m planning to check on Galatea next. But if you’re feeling calm, Vigna, how about you?”
“I’m fine. I just need to head back, so you don’t have to accompany me. Are you sure you want to stay with me?”
“Well, yeah?”
“You should act a little embarrassed, you know…”
Blushing furiously, Vigna says something unreasonable, but she doesn’t show the same terrifying aura as before with the soldiers. There’s something cute about her, and I wait for the preparations to finish, grinning foolishly.
And for some reason, I find myself heading towards Galatea’s location with Vigna, who seems excessively prepared.
“You don’t have to go out of your way to wipe yourself off…”
“It’s not good! I wouldn’t want you to think I smell bad or anything.”
“I don’t really mind, though…”
“I mind!!”
As we exchange banter, I notice a crowd of dwarves gathering in the square. Oh, looks like things are going well. I can’t help but smile at everyone happily enjoying potatoes.
We’re distributing the successful potato dishes we made in the previous village, along with the recipe. It’s not just the children, even the adult dwarves seem delighted. And since potatoes can grow in high places, we’ve already collected some and started cooking them here.
And in the midst of all this, something stands out…
“Come on, there’s still plenty left!! No need to rush, everyone!”
“It’s delicious, Ruby-sama!!”
“That outfit suits you perfectly, too!!”
Yes, it’s Ruby, dressed in a maid uniform, cooking. Despite being a princess, she insisted on doing it herself.
And a little further away, there’s a masked man muttering something uncomfortably.
“Ah, to serve the people in such an absolute position as royalty. What a wonderful maid spirit! Yes, being a maid isn’t just about status, it’s about the way you carry yourself.”
“Wow…”
“That creepiness… feels familiar somehow…”
Vigna is genuinely cringing. Anyway…
“Hey, Galatea, everything going smoothly?”
“Yes, of course! Master!”
Galatea greets me with a smile after finishing cooking. She continues her cooking with graceful movements as we converse.
Thanks to the potatoes, the food shortage will hopefully improve somewhat. I nod in satisfaction as Galatea hands me a warm serving of baked potatoes with butter.
And then… it’s time for Ein and the others’ investigation…
