Chapter 60. Side Story – The Potential for Aggressive Use of the 1000-Yen Repeat
This is a side story.
It has no connection to the previous chapter.
It fits somewhere around after Chapter 10.
As I was thinking about aggressive use of the 1,000 yen repeat purchase, something suddenly came to mind.
I’ve seen multiple works that depict people making bombs from plastic playing cards.
I think the first time I saw it was in a manga about a land of eternal spring.
I thought, Is that even possible?
But then, I saw it again in a paperback aimed at teenagers, also involving a heart-pounding story.
I also think it appeared in a war manga written by a married couple of manga artists. I’m not entirely sure about that one though.
Still, “Is that even possible?”
I ended up buying plastic playing cards just to check.
I was, well… very gullible at the time…
No, no, no—I’m a proper adult now, and I know that was all fiction.
I don’t believe for a second that chewing up plastic cards and squishing them in your mouth can make a bomb, okay?
Even if, by some wild chance, it was possible, I’d need a detonator or some kind of ignition device, right?
A detonator…
I remember seeing, when I was looking for a cheap and fun watch to buy, that you could make a timer device with one…
But I have no idea how to actually build one.
If we’re going to talk about making real explosives, wouldn’t I need black powder? I do know the ingredients—just need to mix three components.
But getting the two ingredients aside from charcoal is hard, isn’t it?
Can I solve this by using bath salts or something?
As for the hardest ingredient, I remember seeing something in a long-running buddy detective drama that if you do something with fertilizer, something can be done, somehow.
Still, with my knowledge, I have no clue what to do or how to do it!
Ah, but there’s something called bat guano, which is used as fertilizer for tomatoes. It’s like fossilized bat droppings. Could that be it? No, that’s phosphorus, so probably not?
I’ve seen a story where a family raising silkworms did something with urine and feces to make explosives.
And in a certain manga, they buried a corpse on a hill to make something…
But all of those methods take years, don’t they? And I have no idea how they actually work.
Handling explosives really seems beyond me…
Maybe instead of explosions, I should think in terms of neutralization.
Yeah—what about putting something to sleep?
In old manga and urban legends, you’d often hear about eye drops being used for that.
Mixing eye drops into alcohol—that trope used to show up all the time in old manga and dramas.
Also, there’s been advice for a long time that if you order a drink and leave your seat, you should drink it all before you leave. Because you never know what someone might slip into it. And back then, eye drops were supposedly one of those options.
Some really old eye drops apparently contained ingredients that intensified intoxication—or so the rumor goes.
Modern ones don’t, so it’s not really an option anymore.
Even if the eye drops I once bought had that in them, and I gave them to a dangerous animal or monster, what would happen immediately…?
It still wouldn’t work!
There’s just no way it’d be fast-acting enough, no matter how I look at it.
Pouring actual alcohol into their mouth would probably be more effective.
Getting someone (or something) to doze off peacefully is really hard.
People always say “use a tranquilizer dart” when a bear appears, but that’s incredibly unreliable.
Its effectiveness changes depending on the animal’s weight or level of adrenaline, and it will also depend on whether it pierces the target and, if so, where it pierces.
On top of that, to fire one, you need to be a veterinarian and able to handle firearms. That’s a pretty steep requirement.
Hmm…
It’d be great if monsters had something like catnip that worked on them too.
Take away their hostility? Calm them down?
Isn’t there anything good out there, under 1000 yen? Preferably even cheaper?
No matter how much I think about it, I can’t come up with a good idea.
Attacking or neutralizing something with just 1000 yen is seriously difficult.
This really is a hard ability to use…
