Chapter 6: Bonus points? skill? [Ridas’s Point of View]
Ridas, upon entering the tavern and taking a seat, found himself troubled.
(What’s with that old man? What is he talking about?)
Bonus points?
Skills?
Ridas didn’t understand most of what Tatsuya was saying.
At that moment,
“Leader.”
One of Ridas’s party members, a woman, entered the tavern.
Then she approached Ridas’s table.
At that moment, Ridas decided to ask.
“Hey, do you know what skills are?”
“Skills? I have no idea.”
“Then what about bonus points?”
“I have no clue.”
She shook her head.
Observing her reaction, the woman ended up asking Lidas instead.
“What’s wrong? Why are you acting strange?”
“I ran into that old man over there earlier. Then he started babbling about weird stuff. Like how he gained skills when he leveled up.”
“Huh? What are you talking about? I’ve never heard of that. There’s nothing you get when you level up, right?”
With that, the woman began ordering as usual.
But something was bothering Ridas.
(That old man may be a useless weakling, but he’s never lied to me before.)
There was no benefit for Tatsuya to lie.
And yet, Ridas thought, he must not be lying this time either.
(I have no idea. What the heck are skills?)
As Ridas pondered this,
*Bam!*
The door of the tavern swung open.
Entering was not Tatsuya, but another man.
“There’s a guy in the Goblin Forest right now, laughing while tearing rocks apart!”
The old man shouted so.
The tavern was enveloped in laughter.
“Hey, what are you talking about?”
“Splitting rocks? With what?”
“You can’t split rocks.”
Everyone in the tavern laughed at the old man’s words.
But the old man continued.
“I-it’s true! There was a man swinging his sword and cutting rocks!”
One man in the tavern spoke up.
“There’s no way that’s true, right? Old man, did you drink some booze and wander into the forest? It’s just a hallucination.”
It seemed like the conversation had settled, but the old man kept going.
“I-it’s true. He said he leveled up and got a skill called ‘Ignore Defense,’ and with that, he could cut rocks.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
No one else in the tavern believed the story.
As for Ridas,
(What a hallucination. But seriously, that pathetic old man’s delusions are just too much.)
Ridas didn’t believe the current story either.
(How ridiculous. There’s no way you can cut rocks, and I’ve never heard of skills or bonus points anyway.)
Wow.
Ridas stood up.
“What’s wrong, leader?”
“I’m heading home today.”
“Huh? You’re leaving already?”
Ridas didn’t answer and went home.
But it was on his way back home that something happened.
(I can’t help but wonder…)
For some reason, Ridas couldn’t get the talk about skills out of his head.
“Status open.”
Name: Ridas
Level: 45
Attack Power: 45
Defense Power: 45
That was the end of the list.
There were no skills, and there were no bonus points displayed.
And Ridas had never seen either with his level-ups so far.
(That old man, he’s a bit too early to start with weird delusions despite his age.)
Ridas felt oddly intrigued.
So, he looked around.
A quiet corridor.
It was a deserted path, but one particular shop caught his eye.
[Ruin’s Fortune Teller]
(There’s a fortune teller’s shop in a place like this? Ruin? I’ve never heard of it, is it someone’s name?)
Considering the old man and all, Ridas decided to enter the fortune teller’s shop on a whim.
The inside of the shop was concealed by hanging fabric.
Feeling annoyed by the fabric, Ridas pushed it aside and entered.
Inside was a young girl wearing what looked like a black bridal gown.
“I’m Ruin, nice to meet you.”
“Hey kid, hurry up and tell fortunes. How much for one session?”
“What kind of life did you live to become so rude? I’d like to use you as a bad example.”
“Shut up, just tell fortunes already, you brat. I want you to tell me about some loser named Tatsuya.”
Ruin placed her hand on a crystal and peered into it.
“I don’t like this person.”
“Huh? You’re quite perceptive for a kid.”
“Apparently, this Tatsuya guy is going to be blessed with companionship, rise in status, and acquire various things in the future. How boring.”
“What? That can’t be true. He’s just a worthless loser, isn’t he?”
“This person seems to be like a transmigrator from another world, blessed with things like ‘skills’ and ‘bonus points.’ What a dull life. Apparently, he’s the only one in this world with these abilities, leveling up and receiving various things.”
“Ugh, whatever, your fortune-telling sucks. Are you delusional too? Next, tell me about myself.”
With a swift motion,
Ruin pointed straight at Ridas.
“Your life will end in ruin.”
“What?”
“You’ll be abandoned by your friends, rejected by your family, and your engagement will be broken off. You’re weak and incompetent, so you’ll struggle to survive. Die miserably! That’s the kind of life I love.”
Ruin smirked.
“Life has its ups and downs. Loss is all there is. I love that kind of life. Getting angry, despairing, broken-hearted, crying, screaming – that’s your life.”
“Are you picking a fight?”
“I’m not picking one. It’s all true. That’s your future.”
“That’s ridiculous!”
Bam!
Ridas kicked over a jar in Ruin’s shop.
(Heh! Serves you right! Know your place!)
But it didn’t break.
Instead, his own foot started to hurt.
(What the… Ouch!)
The jar seemed to have an unnaturally hard surface.
Ridas cautiously looked back at Ruin.
“Who are you?”
“I’m Ruin. Ruin, the harbinger of destruction, appears before those whose ruin is near. So, feel relieved, okay? From now on, I’ll support your impending ruin wholeheartedly. It’s a 100% guaranteed destruction service! If you don’t meet your ruin, you get a full refund! Once I’ve set my sights on you, it’s all over~”
The next moment, Ridas found himself outside the shop.
(Huh? This is the same place I was just at.)
He looked at where the fortune teller’s shop had been.
It was an empty lot.
(W-Was that… a dream? There’s no way something like that could happen!)
Ridas began to run away as if fleeing from something.
