Chapter 96: The Rescue Team Springs into Action

Rest, who had arrived on the scene as part of the rescue staff, found himself in the territory of monsters. Naturally, the monsters attacked.

“Grrrrrr…!”

Appearing before them was a wolf-like monster, growling menacingly. There were three of them, already aware of Rest and the others, baring their fangs in intimidation.

“Alright, I’ll keep an eye on them. Danila, Thomas, Rest, each of you take down one. Nakua, stay back and wait.”

Yugroot the squad leader commanded.

Thomas was a student from the Knight Division, while Nakua was from the Cleric Division. Although both were members of the executive committee, they had hardly interacted beyond introductions.

“Got it! I’ll take the one in the middle. Thomas, you take the left, Rest, the right.”

 Declared Danila.

“Understood.”

Rest didn’t know why Danila was giving orders, but there was no point in objecting, so he complied. The monsters before them were wolf monsters, not much different in strength from those he had trained against.

“Let’s finish them off quickly… Wind Blade!”

Rest activated his magic before the enemy could move.

The wind blade flew and vertically bisected the head of the wolf on the right, easily defeating it.

“Oraah!”

“Gyai!”

Danila leaped at the wolf in the center.

The wolf tried to bite him, but he skillfully evaded its fangs and swung his sword.

The sharp blade deeply slashed the wolf’s neck, instantly killing it.

“Kuh, yah, take this!”

“Gyau, gyau!”

The third person, named Thomas, a student from the Knight Division, didn’t have as much ease as Rest or Danila, but he managed to defeat the wolf without getting injured.

“Alright, seems like there’s no problem.”

Yugroot lightly applauded the three who had effortlessly defeated the monsters.

“It seems you can manage at least the minimum requirement. By the way… Rest, how many more shots can you fire with that magic?”

“Why are you asking that?”

“Just answer quickly. It’s an order from your superior.”

Yugroot said coldly.

Rest sighed softly before replying.

“I’m not sure how many shots, but with this magic, I can fire a hundred shots without running out of magic energy.”

“Hmm, that’s reassuring… Alright, let’s move forward.”

Rest and the others proceeded across the plains and took up the positions assigned to them in advance.

“We’ll wait here. Once the distress signal goes up, we’ll move in for rescue.”

 Yugroot instructed.

“Got it.”

They were strictly rescue staff. While they would fend off attacking monsters, they wouldn’t actively hunt them down. They remained vigilant, keeping an eye on the surroundings and the sky for any distress signals.

“Oh…!”

Thirty minutes passed while they waited.

A red smoke rose in the eastern sky.

“That’s it, let’s go! Hurry!”

Yugroot started running.

Rest and the others followed suit. Yugroot seemed to be using some kind of physical enhancement, running at quite a speed.

(If I use “Super Acceleration,” I might be able to catch up… but we’re operating as a unit right now. It’s not a good idea to act independently, even in an emergency.)

Rest matched his pace with his comrades as they ran across the plains… and soon, they arrived at the location where the distress signal had been raised.

“Gaaahhh!”

“Ugh… Ugh…”

“Damn… you monsters…!”

There were four humans and two monsters. Two of the humans were facing off against the monsters, while one lay injured. The last one was tending to the fallen comrade.

The two battling the monsters also seemed injured, covered in wounds.

Facing them stood a lion-like monster, as large as a bear.

“I’ll help! I’ll take the right, and you three take the left. Nakua, tend to the injured!”

Yugroot gave succinct instructions and drew his sword, heading towards the black lion on the left.

“Thomas and I will take the lead! Rest, we’re counting on your support from the rear!”

Danila stepped forward with Thomas, confronting the black lion.

When a knight and a mage fought together, it was customary for the knight to take the vanguard while the mage served as the rearguard. Danila’s decision was correct.

(Well, it wouldn’t be a problem if I stepped forward… but, let’s have the two from the Knight Division take the lead here.)

Rest stood behind his two Knight Division comrades, observing the black lion.

The black lion was of considerable strength for a monster. Those with little experience in battling monsters would likely fall within minutes.

(However… it doesn’t seem to be an overwhelmingly powerful monster. As long as we don’t let our guard down, we should be able to defeat it.)

“Wind Blade!”

Rest cast two spells simultaneously.

He sliced through both front legs of the black lion, which was as large as a bear.

“Gyaaaah!?”

Although the leg was not completely severed, the black lion greatly lost its balance.

“Nice!”

“Y-Okay…!”

Danila and Tomas take advantage of this opportunity to kick the ground.

The two of them sandwiched the black lion from both sides and slashed it repeatedly with their swords.

“Gggyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!”

Although the black lion had many cuts on its body, it still fought back with its bloody claws.

“[ice spear]”

“Gyaaaah!?”

There, Rest activates more magic.

Two ice spears pierce the black lion’s eyes, robbing him of his vision.

“After the paws are the eyes… It’s so merciless!”

Danila screamed as he delivered a sharp thrust.

The blow that evaded the claws that swung wildly and pierced the black lion’s torso, directly piercing its heart.

“Ga…a…”

The black lion fell to the ground and did not move.

Red-black blood slowly spread across the ground of the plain, and the battle ended.
